This game...I can't put my finger on what bothers me so much. Yeah, the defense was soft and appeared slow. Yes, Shanle had zero tackles and one assist. Yes, our running game was nonexistent.

I can get over all that stuff. It's not our identity. Our identity is Brees, and the way he looked bothered (bothers) me.

First, he appeared to be retreating all day. Fidgety, skittish, and jittery.

Second, he was decidedly unsure all day. On the sidelines, he looked passive and sorta scared from the beginning. He looked tight.

I don't know what caused this with him. He's the Superbowl MVP of a great offense with great performance history over the past 5 years. Why not be confident and aggressive? Even if there is something in the gameplan that worries you, why not attack it regardless rather than tap-dance around it?

That's what bothered me. Because if that shows up again, our chances aren't good. And it doesn't ever need to show up; it serves no purpose. It's vexing that it even would show up. And the only one who can control whether it shows up or not is Drew.

Just be the ball, Drew. For better or worse, sling it like the maniac you are. Stop trying to control it.

You think it was the fear of interceptions? You think he was holding on too tight?

I say we give Chase Daniel a shot.

i wouldn't worry about Brees's's confidence....if anything, he is losing confidence in the WRs who continue to drop catchable passes

I didn't mean to sound that crazy.

I just want Brees to, in every game, throw his nertz up on the table and tell everyone to deal with it.

Rather than every 15 games or so deciding to persayfoot around and play scared.

There were some drops, but Brees wasn't exactly accurate.

Plus, the receivers aren't our backbone. They're dressing. Our team starts and ends with Brees.

So while there might be other issues, I'm focused on the one that affects outcomes the most.

Even if he flames out in a 4 interception performance, I want to see him do it with confidence. You gain nothing by playing tentatively when you're as awesome as he is.

I recall reading that in the off season last year, Brees and the receiver got together all off season and worked on routes and the little things that they made look so easy last year. That didn't happen this off season because they were all busy with other things because of the Super Bowl. I think that is showing on the field. You aren't seeing as many of those back shoulder throws or plays where Brees puts it in the exact right place and maybe that little bit less preparation has cost them the perfection they had last year. Brees is still great, but he's not in perfect sync to the receivers to where they seem to have a telepathic connection the way they were last year. That leads to the less than perfect passes, more drops than we should have and possibly the lack of confidence you see.

I also think part of it is trying to work Bush into the offense. When he was out, Brees got used to looking for Moore and the TE's as his safety valves and now he has to look to Bush. It will take some time to adjust just like it did last year when Bush was hurt.

Maybe, if you're looking at the entire year. But you would think by week eleventyteen that they would have had plenty of time to synch up all the throws and techniques.

I'm looking at one game - the Baltimore game. Brees played scared, imo. That doesn't make any sense to me. It wasn't just his play, it was his mannerisms from pregame throughout. Whenever the camera was on him, he didn't look like the world beater that he is. He didn't look like the terminator. Brother looked scared.

He's played a handful of scared games like this before, and the results are usually terrible. The second half of the NFC championship game, the Chicago playoff game, the Baltimore game from 06, numerous Carolina games - those come to mind.

I think Brees is very smart and controlling. And I think sometimes he tries to control too much. This game, I think he knew he was playing against the "Baltimore Defense" and was trying extra hard not to throw picks.

I hate seeing him tentative in the pocket. I hate seeing him retreat in the pocket. I hate seeing him fidgety and skittish. If you're gonna lose, don't lose out of fear to mess up (especially when you're as awesome as he is). Lose because you were going balls out.

But seriously, who am I to tell Drew Brees how to play. I mean, he's gotten this far without Mongoosian input. And maybe I'm simplifying things too much - maybe the pocket was getting pushed from the middle and he had to retreat to see over the linemen. Maybe all his receivers were covered up. I dunno.

I just don't see Tom Brady ever playing scared, even when he flames out. It's all part of the "if you're gonna be a bear, be a grizzly" mentality that I support. You're either all in or all out. Half stepping is a sure path to failure.

Well, I think you were seeing a couple things and part of it is what I posted above. The other parts are the fact that Baltimore runs a complex scheme and the middle of our line has been pretty bad this year allowing penetration up the middle. That has made it tough for Brees to step up and the result is that he can't see the field as well and he is forced to throw over the line instead of in the gaps. That makes it more difficult for him to make those perfect throws. When he can step up he doesn't have to put extra arch on the ball or throw around the lines. The result is that he is defaulting to falling back even when the pressure isn't there.

In the alternative, it's your fault.

being short, we can understand brees need to step up.
