Underhill thinks Carr will be Saints starter [mod edit: Moore-Carr meeting went well; Saints plan is to keep Carr in 2025 & figure out contract] (48 Viewers)

The issue is not rolling with Carr next year, that's a practical choice given our cap situation. The problem is committing to Carr financially past next year due to Mick's illogical cap philosophy for team rebuilding.
What makes it illogical?

The thing is that I don't think the Commanders did that on purpose. They were just that bad.
This means we're at least one more coaching cycle before getting an elite franchise QB. Taylor Heinke Sam Howell were the guys before Jayden. I think they had a vet somewhere in there as well.

Doesn't seem like they're all that torn. Neither of them think it's the right way to go but have to accept it as beat reporters that it's the way the team is going. The ending where they were comparing to other teams was most relevant to me and I think it's where fans have philosophical differences.

Do you want to be the Steelers and make the playoffs 4 out of the last 5 years just to get bounced in the wildcard game every time? Or do you want to be the Commanders, get that top QB and make the NFC Championship game and feel like the next year could be the year? After quite a few years of being not even as good as the Steelers, I'm ready to try the Commanders route. I'm ready to make Rattler our Sam Howell and if he fails like Howell did you might get a Jayden Daniels.

The thing is that I don't think the Commanders did that on purpose. They were just that bad.

And the other problem is that tanking is no guarantee that you get that Jayden Daniels type QB. Many teams have tried and failed. Look at Cleveland, the Bears, and the Jets. Even Detroit was down for like 30 years of tanking.

That's the thing. It's not like they haven't been bad for years even with relatively high pick QBs. They just got lucky and were that bad the year Daniels was in the draft and the Bears passed on him.

Yeah both of them are ready for him to be gone because stocking with the current status quo means being meh for longer. Unfortunately that doesn't mean that's what the team will do.

Moore's a better OC than Kubiak so it's not a stretch to think Carr can give him enough to win. He's not good enough to win on his own but give him a good run game to lean on or a full receiving corp then maybe think it's good enough. Not like the cap was going to be good one way or the other, might as well as make the most out of a bad situation for a year.

Triplett and Underhill both took a lot of time and words to basically keep circling around "I understand it, but it's not what I would like to see them do." They seem stuck in the ambivalence of not loving or hating it.

It was interesting to me that Triplett said that Moore seems to genuinely want to roll with Carr.
His contract is tough to get out of and was a contract signed because Loomis showed faith in DA, but it's a 4-year contract and he (Carr) is going on year three and Moore will be here long after Carr so it's a bullet we will have to bite, but again, Carr is not a bad QB, he's just not the QB the new coach inherited from the old regime.

The Commanders won 4 games that season, 1 less than us last year. And we didn't do it on purpose either. We just had bad enough luck that more teams were even worse and ended up with the 9th pick. So it's not a matter of forcing it to happen, it's just letting it happen while making other sounds decisions. That is what they did, they let Howell sink after treading water for a few years with Heinicke. And we could do that with Rattler, or be surprised that he develops. Instead we're going to ride with our Heinicke another year.

Obviously this tweet falls in the realm of “FWIW,” but obviously Nick is as dialed-in as anyone, so I figured it was worth posting.

I really am shocked that our 3-time Pro Bowl veteran QB who played pretty well last year despite no OL and no WRs, and a pretty bad defensive output, and who has a winning record with the saints is going to start over the 5th round Rookie who played 3 decent quarters of football in seven games and didn’t get a single win. Shocked.

This must’ve been the toughest decision ever.

How did they do it?? I may actually pass out from surprise. 😒

You know that I wanted to cut Carr and go with Rattler or a young vet free agent. And if it naturally happened that the record was bad, I was fine with it.

So, I'm not happy with the situation. But, it is what it is and they can still build the team even with Carr here. Yes, the picks might be a bit worse, but it can still be done.

I mean it's pretty obvious if you watch the games. Derek is the manifestation of a C+ QB.
Maybe to you and some other fans of the game, but the paid professional evaluators employed by teams see Carr as better than a C+ QB.

I don't think anyone's hating on Kellen for this, but it's such a classic Loomis move.
We've officially reached the denial stage of the grieving process.

Moore was the one who made the dcecision to stick with Carr. It was not a "Loomis move." The Loomis move will be making what Moore decided work in a way that gives the team more cap space to make other moves that Moore wants.

I'd much rather trust my own eyes and thoughts than someone who I don't know who has consistently made poor decisions for the past 7ish years.
What poor decisions has Moore made over the past 7ish years? No matter how much people want to deny it, Moore made the decision to roll with Carr and he made it for winning football games reasons.

They both very clearly said that they don't think it's the wrong way to go, it's just the way they'd like the team to go.

They both very clearly pointed out that to do like the Commanders you have to be like the Commanders and spend years as a very bad team before you get lucky. The Commanders have been bad for a long time.

They also said very clearly that you can do it the way the Commanders did and be bad until you get lucky or you can do it like the Ravens did and be competitive until you get lucky.

I'm ready to try the Commanders route.
So you're ready for the Saints to be as bad or worse than they were last year for five or more years?

It's not a bullet the Saints have to bite. You and some others think it's a bullet they have to bite, but it isn't.

but again, Carr is not a bad QB, he's just not the QB the new coach inherited from the old regime.
Even Triplett acknowledge that Moore genuinely wants to roll with Carr. Moore doesn't seem to see it as being stuck with Carr by inheritance. He seems genuinely excited to have Carr as his QB according to Moore and some of the beat reporters.

The people who share your opinion of Carr seem to be in denial about the fact that Moore is glad to have Carr as his QB.

I'm willing to wait to see contract details. There is a world where you make the money work for this season alone without extending him. If they extend him with new money, I'm gonna lose my proverbial poo.

And what will you be saying when reality hits and we are 8-9 and missing the playoffs again? It'll be excuses galore again, youll find another boogie man for Derek Carr's failed career.
SMH there were 2 reasons we did not make the playoffs this past yr. A bad HC and INJURIES. I believe we have fixed the 1st one. The other is not totally under anyone's control. If you think there was any other reason then you are just delusional.
I'm not saying that DC is an elite , HOF QB but you people that think wins and loses are solely the responsibility of the QB are just clueless.
Do you know how many HOF QBs there are that have losing records ???
W/L RECORD IS NOT AN ACCURATE JUDGE OF HOW GOOD A QB IS
