Back on the trail of the fugitive. The neighbors account of the camper is interesting. Perhaps the Mustang in the refuge was a diversion and he is camping out comfortably in a camper somewhere. I never thought that going to a swamp refuge was a good idea.

essentially you're saying "i don't have an issue with violence, i just don't want my kid to be the target"
and i think it's the violence/punishment dynamic that needs to be addressed no the 'identifying the proper target of violence' dynamic

Yeah, I wouldn't go as far, but I definitely would let them know in no uncertain terms that if there was ever any abuse, that my daughters would know that they don't have to put up with that and always have a way out in that case. The visceral response is totally understandable though.

I understand your response. I am not in any way a violent person ; never had even been in a fist fight.
But on the other hand they did not know that. My way is just to let them know to think twice before striking a woman.

Excellent perspective. Plus, I'm skeptical how effective of a deterrent it really is. Capital punishment doesn't put a stop to murder.

In the vein of what guido said, I think that's the best deterrent, to not be violent and not model that style of "conflict resolution" in the domestic environment for our kids.

It can actually increase murders as I recall from La's decision not to put capital punishment on rape of a juvenile.

Yeah, exactly. What was in my head also was that when we are upset at crime we yell for more laws, stricter laws. What we mean is we want crime to stop, but more laws don't seem to work as a deterrent.

i think even more insidious is that the scripted often apply 'logical' actions to the attacker bc that's what drama likes to do - tie up loose ends and provide reasons
but these attacks are often crimes of passion - meaning the person is not in the 'right mind' and how do the people orbiting the attacker respond? who knows? you've never trained for this
'you see it all over this thread, 'if i was _____ (the guy, the girl, the parents, the cops), the i would have...' - it is a completely pointless exercise - if you've never been in such traumatic/life or death situations, you have no idea how you would act
