Certainly was nice to be back on Airline after nearly 2 years away (last practice I made being 8/11/2019). While it was an absolute scorcher today, thanks to the bleacher shade, it wasn't as smothering as it was for the staff and players on the field. 🥵 I ended up with a solid 3.5 pages of notes today, but they aren't as fluid as I've had previous years unfortunately so I'll have to get back into the groove of note taking again. Anyways, hope y'all enjoy... :)

11 vs 11 - this 11v11 period seemed to be a half-speed/walkthrough period since the team hadn't stretched yet; Tanoh Kpassagnon and Pete Werner getting reps with the 1st team defense; Hill and Winston each got 4 reps before rotating out with each other this period...
  • Murray run left-middle before cutting back to the right
  • Murray run right-outside, the defense had good pursuit on it, especially Werner who was in there first
  • Kamara run right-outside, after he bounced it out he was 1v1 with Robinson who wouldn't have had much of a prayer if it was a live drill or game considering the space Kamara had to work with
  • Kamara run left-inside; Hill's last rep, Winston rotates in...
  • Kamara run right-middle for ~5 yards before meeting Jenkins; also noticed Baun and Payton Turner came in on this rep
  • Murray run right-inside for ~4-5 yards, Baun on the stop
  • Murray run middle
  • Kamara run middle; Winston's last rep, Hill rotates in...
  • Murray up middle on a HB as Kamara was threatening a jet sweep
  • Hill to Harris on a short out for ~5 yards, Robinson in coverage
  • Hill to Humphrey on a curl in the middle of the field
  • Hill to Humphrey on a post, Robinson in coverage; Hill's last rep, Winston rotates in...
  • Winston to Harris on a deep dig, Harris was wide-right and Winston's 3rd progression after the 2 WR's on the left
  • Winston to Montgomery on an out from the slot, Gardner-Johnson blitzes from the slot and provides a bit of pressure
  • Winston to Murray in the flat after play action, horn sounds ending the period
QB/RB Drills - this was mostly just various quick reps by the QB and RB with both positions running a rep and then rotating out; I didn't take a lot of notes during these since there wasn't much going on
  • First they ran screens: Hill to Kamara, Winston to Murray, Siemian to Washington (all to left), Hill to Kamara, Winston to Jones Jr., Book to Scott III (all to right)
  • Next they each did a few hand off exchanges; didn't really see any bad exchanges so that's good
  • Then they did a few more passing routes out the backfield:
    • Flat routes to fullbacks - Hill to Armah, Winston to Sutton Smith (the LB that just switched over)
    • Wheels - Winston hit 2 nice ones, first to Murray and then to Scott III
    • Flat routes to running backs - lots of ugly passes during this one with most of them being behind the RB, although Hill did have a really nice one at the beginning; horn then sounds
QB/WR Drills - similar to the last period, it was just the QB's and 2 receivers (1 on each side); the QB's took simultaneous snaps (Hill and Winston, Siemian and Book) and it seems as thought they took turns throwing first where the 2nd QB had to wait until the 1st decided which route he was throwing to and then the next rep they flipped the order of who...

New Orleans Saints look to evaluate talent at every position, including punter

The New Orleans Saints take the field for Day 1 of Training Camp presented by SeatGeek at
the Ochsner Sports Performance Center.

The battle for the punting job on an NFL team never is going to garner similar attention to the battle for quarterback. The New Orleans Saints might not even have one: The team liked Blake Gillikin enough last year to keep him on injured reserve while Thomas Morstead completed his 12th season with the franchise.

But there's another punter, Nolan Cooney, in the mix. Gillikin handled punting duties on the first day of training camp in the Saints' indoor practice facility, and Cooney punted Friday when the team worked on the outdoor fields.

Coach Sean Payton said that there's a reason that the Saints have two punters in camp.

"Part of it is being smart with the legs, but you're looking at young talent," Payton said. "It's not that you just have two punters, you found a second one that you think has got ability. You watch (Cooney on Friday) and it was a little boom or bust when he was kicking, but when it was boom, it was pretty good.

Cadre of leaders set the tone for New Orleans Saints

By John DeShazier | Senior Writer -

For 15 years the predominant face of the New Orleans Saints was steely-eyed and laser-focused, so routine-oriented that it bordered on obsession and so optimistic that it warmly was labeled "annoying."

Now, entering the 2021 training camp presented by SeatGeek, one of the faces of the Saints wears locs and a grill, inhaled Airheads at such a rate that the candy created a flavor for him, and wore red and green cleats on Christmas Day that earned him a fine after a record-tying performance.

Another face is a spirit-filled family man who gives goosebump-inducing pregame speeches while wearing a "Man of God" headband, then crushes opponents on the field with a ferocity that is downright frightening, then stands against social injustices off it.

Still, another is a rapper whose words fill the locker room on weekdays and the Caesars Superdome on gamedays, who often handles defensive ends as a bouncer would a tipsy patron, and aims to build schools when his playing career ends.

And another has made no secret that he wants his career to begin and end in New Orleans, has rooted his family in the city, and has been a towering presence for his community work while crafting one of the best careers as a defensive player in franchise history.

First-year Lions coach Dan Campbell has spent the last five seasons as an assistant on the Saints’ staff, and that gave him plenty of ideas for how to use his running backs.

Campbell said he envisions D'Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams being similar to Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram when they were teammates on the Saints, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

“That’s my vision of this 1-2 punch,” Campbell said. “That’s how I see Jamaal Williams for us, for Detroit. He’s high energy, he’s a bit of a hammer and I think he’s a guy your team can feed off of a little bit. I said...

Whirlwind week for veteran Saints WR Chris Hogan sends him from PLL back to NFL

Suiting up at receiver for the New Orleans Saints wasn't the plan for Chris Hogan.

It wasn't the plan last month. It definitely wasn't the plan last week, either.

In an alternate universe, Hogan would be in game day mode for the Premier Lacrosse League's reigning champion Whipsnakes. The 6-foot-3 midfielder would have traveled to Colorado Springs, Colorado, with his team ahead of Saturday's game against the Waterdogs.

"Honestly, that's what I was preparing for," Hogan said Friday.

That PLL game is still on as scheduled, but Hogan is in Metairie catching passes from quarterbacks...

The New Orleans Saints have re-signed Tommylee Lewis.

The fifth-year wide receiver is back on the roster as the Saints look for veteran help while Michael Thomas misses time recovering from ankle surgery.

Head coach Sean Payton also announced that the team has activated defensive back PJ Williams and offensive guard Derrick Kelly II from the non-football injured list (NFI) list.

New Orleans head their first outdoor practice of training camp Friday.

Saints sign Tommylee Lewis, bringing back a familiar face to help receiver roster crunch

Would it really be the start of a new football season if Tommylee Lewis was not participating in New Orleans Saints camp?

Though he did not participate in Friday's practice, Lewis' signing was on the official NFL transactions wire Friday afternoon, marking the return of a player who has had an on-again, off-again relationship with the Saints organization.

Lewis made the Saints as an un-drafted free agent back in 2016, largely because of his ability as a return man, averaging 11.4 yards per punt return as a rookie. The Saints also occasionally worked him into the offensive rotation as...

Saints training camp notebook from July 30: Sense of calm returns at receiver

New Orleans Saints training camp was a test of elements as temperatures ran as high as some of the passes in the team’s first outdoor practice. The pads were still off, but the bleachers were packed with fans vying to get a glimpse of the quarterback competition; Gayle Benson even did a quick round on a golf cart to give a warm welcome (pun intended).

It was my first day at Saints training camp, and while my notes are illegible, the energy was palpable. Today finally felt like football was back in full swing for the first time since 2019, scorching heat wave aside. Much of the focus was...

Former Saints starters Jermon Bushrod, Sterling Moore join staff as coaching interns

Two new (but familiar) faces are patrolling the sidelines in New Orleans Saints training camp: Jermon Bushrod and Sterling Moore, who each played for the club before hanging up their cleats. Both former Saints players have returned to join Sean Payton’s staff as coaching interns this summer.

Bushrod, 36, last played for the Saints in 2018 after spending a few years with the Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins. Before he took that detour, he helped the Saints win Super Bowl XLIV as their starting left tackle and was teammates with Zach Strief, now New Orleans’ assistant offensive line coach...

For the first time in two years, fans were welcomed back to the Ochsner Sports Performance Center for New Orleans Saints training camp, and it was a hot one.

After spending the first day of training camp inside, the Saints moved outside for their second of three sessions of helmets and jerseys. They'll put on full pads on Monday, Aug. 2.

Two players were absent Friday: cornerback Grant Haley and rookie tight end Dylan Soehner. Haley's absence is for a personal reason. It's unclear at this time why Soehner was absent.

In good news, the Saints got back both defensive back P.J. Williams...

Saints bring back Tommylee Lewis

A familiar face is back with the Saints.

Saints head coach Sean Payton announced at his Friday press conference that the team has signed wide receiver Tommylee Lewis. Lewis was in for a visit earlier this week that was likely about checking his health because Lewis is well known in the organization.

Lewis signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2016 and remained with the club through the 2018 season. He was out of the league in 2019 after signing with and being cut by the Lions, but returned to the Saints last year.

Lewis caught 21 passes in those stints, but he’s best...

Day 2 of Saints training camp is in the books, as New Orleans spent their time outside with fans being able to get their first glimpse of the team. Here's all the notes and observations from Friday's session, and be sure to check out what went down on Thursday if you haven't already.

Grant Haley, who missed yesterday's session due to a personal reason, was not present today. Also, Dylan Soehner was not in attendance. P.J. Williams, Derrick Kelly II, and Wil Lutz were all present.

New Orleans signed Tommylee Lewis to the active roster after a tryout on Thursday.

Taysom vs. Jameis Saints QB battle: Today's word is 'efficiency'

Temperatures approached triple digits as the New Orleans Saints held their first outdoor practice of 2021 training camp, but that didn’t stop fans from packing the bleachers to get their first glimpse of the team in this setting since 2019.

And while many came eager to throw their support behind Jameis Winston or Taysom Hill, who are vying for the chance to succeed Drew Brees, Friday’s practice offered more simple efficiency than it did flash.

Again, Hill worked with the first team offense, and again, coach Sean Payton made clear that Winston’s time with the first team unit will come...

Saints re-sign Tommylee Lewis again, clear Wil Lutz and P.J. Williams to practice

Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but the New Orleans Saints have re-signed Tommylee Lewis. The fifth-year wide receiver has had an on-again, off-again relationship with the team, but a recent spat of injuries and suspensions have brought him back to New Orleans yet again. Saints coach Sean Payton announced Lewis’ return in his post-training camp press conference on Friday, a day after Lewis tried out for the team as a free agent.

Expect Lewis to compete for a backup role to Deonte Harris, whose offseason DUI arrest could sideline him for a few weeks during the regular season. Lewis...

Saints signed Chris Hogan without using any of their salary cap space

Chris Hogan signing with the New Orleans Saints on the eve of training camp created a bit of a wave, mostly because he’d given up football to try his hand at pro lacrosse. But it was a canny move by the Saints to pad out their depth chart — they basically brought him in for nothing.

NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill reported that the Saints signed Hogan to a one-year deal at the veteran’s minimum ($1.075 million for the nine-year pro), which qualifies for a salary cap benefit. It means he’ll only count $850,000 against the cap, which is beneath the top-51 threshold used during the...

Saints QB rotation continues with Taysom Hill running first team on Day 2

As expected, Taysom Hill continued to receive snaps with the first-team offense on the second day of New Orleans Saints training camp practices. This follows the plan Saints coach Sean Payton outlined following Thursday’s start to camp, in which he described a rotation between Hill and Jameis Winston. Both passers are competing to replace Drew Brees this year, and so far Hill — in his fifth season with New Orleans — has gotten first crack at it while Winston runs the second-team offense in his second year as a Saint.

But we shouldn’t read into this too heavily, if at all. Payton said both...
