The Electric Vehicle (EV) discussion thread (Merged)

i
i have never seen a Rivian vehicle before, or honestly even heard of them. coincidentally i got behind one just now.
i dig the look of this pickup.
(Don't worry, I was behind him in a construction zone so I was stopped for a good 10 minutes..)

The unusual design draws you in but the gear tunnel and the huge frunk keep you there. I usually keep all my emergency gear in there. Spare clothing and blankets, recovery boards, first aid kit, kinetic ropes, etc. I bought a new rifle recently and found the tunnel to be the perfect place to store it.

On the downside, it’s a unibody on top of a body on frame. A very unusual design from an engineering standpoint. That design makes them expensive to repair after a car collision but also make it the safest truck in the world.

They are getting to be common where I live. Also have seen a bunch more cybertrucks than would seem to be statistically likely. I guess Greensboro is a hotbed of EV uptake.

When I initially got my R1T, there were maybe 500 in all of Colorado. I constantly got excited stares. People would crowd the truck and ask questions. Most folks thought it was a Chinese vehicle and were blown away when I told them it was an American car company out of Illinois.

Now, almost three years later, these things are EVERYWHERE in Colorado. Especially around Boulder. It’s still not as common as Tesla Model 3 or Y but they are WAAAAAYYYY more common than Cybertrucks or F150 Lightnings.

That said, I plan to trade mine in for a Scout Terra when they finally come to market. That’s a more traditional truck design. Very similar in look to the Rivian but the bed is totally separate, and significantly larger. It also has a fixed rear axle which will let it have a differential locker for off roading. It also helps that it’s using the Zonal Architecture that VW is licensing from Rivian to reduce costs but also greatly speed up the time between design and manufacturing.

now that i know what they look like, i have now seen another one yesterday evening on my way home.

i've put a whopping 2k in the last year on my vw e-golf. still, i love this car. my only gripe is the fwd with no weight over the front. it takes little effort to 'chirp' the tires.

any recommendations on super-grippy tires? i'm looking at both michelin crossclimate2 and michelin pilot sport 4s.

I have Michelin Pilot Sport 4Ss on my M3. Very grippy, but will ride somewhat rougher and louder than an all season. If performance on the road is what you are looking for, they the Michelin Ps4s is hard to beat.

hell yes. that is exactly what i want.

Ford way overplayed its hand in raising prices a ton last year. In December, I was sitting in the dealership about to overpay for a Mach e. We were $3000 apart and neither would budge, so I walked. So glad I did. Even at the price I was ready to pay was way more than I can get one now.
Elon has made me regret going with the Tesla over the marked-up Mach e. I wish I could go back in time and overpay by $3000

there are a few rivians out here. oddly, i was seeing cybertrucks frequently, haven't seen one in a while.
One of the parents at my daughter's school has a Cybertruck. it was just ahead of me in the drop-off line. As it pulled away and rounded the turn I was again reminded of how ******* ugly that thing is from any viewing angle. it does not have one single perspective that makes it attractive in the least
