2024 Tropical Weather Thread (2 Viewers)

I don't have flood insurance because if my house floods then the world ends. Then again, I also was quite selective where I bought a house.
I used to think that the only way I would flood is if the levee broke, badly, 20 something miles away. 2016 taught me different. Although I did have flood insurance. It came within about 5 inches from entering the house but the rafters under the house sat in water for about 5 days, buckled the floors.
I know it's hard to believe but flood insurance did nothing for us.

Well yeah, some places don’t need it - as a matter of sensibility. I’m referring to people who live in flood risk areas.
Thats the problem though, most places have at least some flood risk but are being zoned and then sold as safer than they are. I live on the top of a hill. I have no risk from flooding but it doesnt protect me from tornadoes or fire. Tried to get earthquake insurance since I figured it would be cheap and on the off chance the New Madrid rips. Nobody even offers it in my area. If that thing goes, it’ll make things really interesting.

Have any of the Hurricane forecasters adjusted their prediction for this year? I know we haven't reached the midway point yet, but nothing seems to be popping up out in the Atlantic. Just throwing this out there cause I'm no weather expert, but I know we have some very knowledgeable people on this site that keep up with this. Also went looking for this thread and found it on the second page, which is kinda unbelievable for this time of the year.

Yes. They have already revised the number of expected hurricanes down by 2 or 3 , IIRC.
But even then I don't see this hurricane season hitting the number of storms they predicted... even the revised number.
I suppose we can thank the Sahara Desert for the break.

But the bad part about the scary forecast they gave is that from now on folks will just chuckle at future forecasts of an intense hurricane season.

At this point in 2020 we were sitting at 11 hurricanes for the season. It ended at 30. Too soon to celebrate and something dumb is still likely to happen but it sure looks a lot better than the forecast indicated.
Let's face it, it really doesn't matter to vulnerable residents how many storms we see develop in a season.
Because it only takes one bad tropical system to visit your neighborhood to make it a bad hurricane season.

I wish I could like this comment more than once.

Because you’re right about future forecasting. But it doesn’t matter if there’s 1 storm or 100 storms if one of those is a <name redacted>

I don’t envy forecasters at all. Undersell and you can get people killed. Oversell and you start looking like you cried wolf. If I were in that position, I’d hedge to the option that doesn’t risk lives as well.

Yes, I heard a met on WWL yesterday say the low pressure systems that roll off the African coast this time of year
are coming off more northerly than normal. This is causing them to mix with dry Saharan air. That was definitely
nice to hear.

The season is still far from Over. Hurricane Michael formed in the south western Caribbean in October. The bad ones
don't always form off the African coast.

Holy Hell! Just landed in London from Naples and Ernesto is still blowing like a hooter!

Be gone storm. You wore out your welcome last week going up the East coast.
