Anyone else question why did Carr leap? (2 Viewers)

Here's my official review of that play.

(I had a few stick figure drawings to illustrate but I can't get them to load.) ;-)

First- there should have been a flag on the defender who was OUT OF BOUNDS when he hit Carr,

I also think that the defender hit Carr in the nads with his shoulder pads.

Carr ends up on the back of Austin's neck area, and Austin "sheds" Carr from off of his neck/helmet making the fall worse.

Carr faceplants, but his first reaction after hitting the ground is to reach for his groin area.

In summary, we know that Carr hurt is left hand and in addition to that I believe he got hit in the nads and was woozy from the face plant!

.

All of that makes sense, until you realize it was 2nd down and we were leading.

It wasn’t smart, cost him and the team.
And you know what? They didn't get a first down and ended up having to punt. In a tight game when you're trying to keep the ball away from the offense, you're gonna try to get a first down any way you can.

And I've seen lots of QBs and RBs try to make the most of a given play. What Carr did isn't all that unusual. If he gains another yard, he'd get applauded, well, unless you don't like Carr.

Just about any other player and we'd be applauding a valiant effort.

The outrage is real.

Had Carr dove behind Austin, he probably gets the 1st down.
How? That isn't a very good angle. The above the field shots and full speed film show it much differently.

But for whatever reason, he decided to leap over (more like go through) Austin, and whacked Austin in the head in the process.
He was gonna get drilled by the guy on the right so over/through was his only option from his view.

It was a bad decision. Pointing out is was a bad decision is not hate. Calm down,
It's not hate, but it was only a bad decision because he didn't make it far enough and hurt himself in the process. If he makes it, we wouldn't be having this discussion. And he came very close to making it.

Not so fast there; had Carr run between the defender and SAINTS blocker/guy in the wayer? Shoulder down and run through? We'll never know. What we DO KNOW? His effort did NOT prevail and now he's not only OUT but The SAINT's chances are left to Haener and/or Rattler or this new DiNuccio (sp) guy? There's aggressive play and there's "going insane" plays. Carr went insane........He's only successfully run the ball less than 5 Xs this entire season~! Anyway. It is what it is .........Glad so many of you "think" he did his best~! Geaux SAINTS~!

You would have to have played a high adrenaline sport in order to understand why he did it. It is all in the heat of battle and the desire to win and do anything to make that happen. Sometimes you have (as Pink Floyd would say) a momentary lapse of reason and you just do something without thinking and you go on instinct.

I played soccer for 30 years and for the most part I never got into the middle of unnecessary head on confrontations playing defense but one time there was a guy that was smoking us badly and I didn't think, and he was driving for the winning goal, so I went head on and paid for it as he knocked me on my butt and kicked me in the shin so hard I got sick to my stomach.

Well, I ended up with a hematoma on my leg the size of a softball and that was the last game I played because I had a family to support. It was all in the heat of the moment and the desire to compete and win. This was weekend warrior stuff although in an organized league still I wasn't getting paid and I still put myself in a situation that led to a bad injury.

I don't fault Carr for doing it but now he knows and that was his one-time pass, from now on he should NEVER attempt that again, unless it is to win a Super Bowl don't even attempt to leave your feet.

If you look at the overhead shot, you can see how quickly the player on the right was gonna get there. The defender had the angle and Carr would have been stopped well short. What he clearly was trying to do was get a first down, which would have given them another set of downs and force the Giants to use up their timeouts sooner.

I mean, the outcome wasn't ideal and it's easy to say in hindsight, but when you're in the moment, you commit and go for it.

He did get the first... the refs just screwed him on the spot. I don't blame Carr for trying to make a play but it gives those that believe Carr makes bone headed decisions in crunch time ammo for their target practice.

Is it not possible to be appreciative of the effort and applaud it, while also pointing out it was a terrible decision?

Wouldn’t the chance of getting that 1st down have been higher w/ Carr on the field instead of Haener?

I think so, but that's not exactly what I'm reading from some of these posts. Some have other motives for doing so. I've never taken you for a Carr's hater, so it doesn't apply to you.

I'd probably say Haener could get there a little quicker. Whether he makes it, who knows?

It was stupid. The morality mob will bully you to submission or cancel you if you're doxxed, but there's a reason every coach in the league tells their franchise QB to slide. It wasn't even 3rd down. Much less 4th. And you are the QB getting paid $30M a year. It was moronic. I bet he would tell you the same thing and regrets the mistake. And no matter what you want to say, it was a mistake. A costly mistake.

It also looks like he was trying to leap behind Austin but was pushed by the defender into the fray and got vaulted higher. I agree with the claim of a split decision on his part and can't fault him for wanting the first down and that in hindsight was ill-advised.

And most are saying it was a bad choice, but there are many are taking it to very insulting levels when all he was doing was being aggressive. The "calm down" part was unnecessary.
Watch the video. Carr tried to leap over a very much standing up Austin, so much that he whacked Austin in the head. Carr didn't get push into Austin. The only reason why the defender touched Carr was because Carr collided with Austin.

I don't know why some are so indignant that others say it was a bad decision by Carr. It was a bad decision. The right decision would've been to dive behind Austin and stay in bounds, not try to leap over a guy he obviously cant leap over.

And being aggressive doesn't necessarily lead to good decisions.
