WASHINGTON (AP) — The Army said Wednesday it will immediately begin discharging soldiers who have refused to get the mandatory COVID-19 vaccine, putting more than 3,300 service members at risk of being thrown out soon.

The Army's announcement makes it the final military service to lay out its discharge policy for vaccine refusers. The Marine Corps, Air Force and Navy have already discharged active-duty troops or entry-level personnel at boot camps for refusing the shots. So far, the Army has not discharged any.

According to data released by the Army last week, more than 3,300 soldiers have refused to get the vaccine. The Army has said that more than 3,000 soldiers have been issued official written reprimands, which suggests they are already identified in the disciplinary process, and some of them could be among the first to be discharged.

The Pentagon has ordered all service members — active-duty, National Guard and Reserves — to get the vaccine, saying it is critical to maintaining the health and readiness of the force. COVID-19 cases continue to surge around the country as a result of the omicron variant..........

I have a feeling the 3300 will be over stated by orders of magnitude by certain folks in the near future.

I was surprised at small the number was. I predict an uptick in Oath Keepers membership by about 3200 in the near future.

I'm actually surprised at how large the number is. I mean, our armed forces have advanced so far technologically that science is second nature to the servicemember. How do you not have faith in science and operate a piece of equipment that cost billions to develop and millions to build?

Well, considering we're talking about a large number of 18 and 19 year olds who haven't yet been through college...

Doesn't the military require you to get injected with all kinds of stuff upon starting? Did they object to those as well, or was it something about the Covid shot that became a bridge too far?

I'm also wondering what the percentage (if any) are those that simply want out. I remember in basic training there were a handful of soldiers that regretted enlisting and looked for ways to get out. The non-compliance, defiant route was met by sending them to a stricter temporary unit where they broke and their will and they came back and fell in line. It doesn't dawn on you that the armed forces is a different beast than the private sector. You can't just quit your job - you're AWOL and subject to discipline.

I'd imagine you experienced it in the Navy.

Certainly, and the military life ain't for everybody. Problem is, most don't find that out until it's too late. And you are probably right, this is their "legal" ticket outta there.

Yes and you know that answer to that

When I was in there was the exact same grumblings about a mandatory anthrax vaccine. They made an example out of a handful and everyone else fell in line. That will happen again.

It could be a general discharge in many cases if I understand properly. As long as it's not dishonorable, it can likely be upgraded.
