I thought he was going to loosen up more on May 1 too so you aren't the only one that was wrong. But, I do think you are right that we will see people breaking the rules if things continue to go well. The problem is that if Latoya sees that, she is going to bring the NOPD hammer down. Although, after the Governor spoke, Latoya said that she could lift the order at any time. I don't think she understands the relationship between State and local governments.

But, I'm not sure how much good it is going to do the New Orleans economy to open up more at this point. It's not like we are going to get any tourist money even if we are open (especially if the bars are closed) and the oil industry is totally screwed right now. So, only locals are really going to be the ones shopping and spending money, but they don't have any money because of the issues with the oil industry and with not having any tourist dollars coming in. It's a really bad situation for us even if we open up for business.

Small/local spending in a small number of places is better than no spending. If there is one thing we do well it is supporting local businesses even when we are collectively on our butts.

This article has more relevant info than the WaPo. I don't have a problem with it especially since he's giving individual counties/cities permission to have different plans.

I read it the other way around. In fact he specifically said that cities and counties can't supersede his removal of face mask requirements. My understanding is he's claiming cities cannot override any of EO. Covid aside, this is yet another overreach by our supposedly "small government" Governor and Lt. Governor. Hypocrites. They are awful. And keep in mind I actually hated the last local rule they overruled(Austin's stupid plastic bag ban). But I hate governmental overreach more.

We'll see how it goes. I said I think it's two weeks too early because we're not seeing any reduction of the curve here, it's mostly just flat. My concern is that once you open up the can of worms it's going to be really hard to get them back in if need be. I don't think Texans are going to react well to re-tightening restrictions if it gets to that point. So let's hope it all works out.

Hopefully heat kills it.

I agree any little bit helps and we will support local businesses. But I think a lot of small local shops can probably operate under the current guidelines that say they can operate as long as there are no more than 10 people in the business. That doesn't apply to restaurants but it does apply to non-essential retail. I think the problem is that nobody really knows who is open and people don't want to go out and some of those businesses don't want to open for fear that their operating costs will be higher than what they can take in on limited sales. That and I think a lot of businesses don't understand the rules.

Probably part of what needs to be done is that someone needs to put together a list of local businesses that are operating within the restrictions and put together some kind of campaign about it being more important than ever to support local businesses. Ideally that would be the City doing it, but I think we will have to rely on a group like GNO, Inc., Gambit, or Nola.com to do it.

Wanted to put this in the humor thread but unfortunately it isn't a joke.
 Some people should be very thankful that breathing is automatic because I'm convinced there are those out there too stupid to carry out that process otherwise.

I don't know if she had more than one sign that day or if she travels to different protests. Some have been photoshopped but not 2 of them. She might be a plant or she's genuinely nuts.

I don't know why that part about Dallas county was put in there. You can say Dallas county mandated that when in public businesses, customers need to wear a facial covering, but they also said no one would be stopped or fined. And I love how they had to put in "Democratic county commissioners". Why does party affiliation matter? Why not also say what race and sex they are too?

I swear there was something in there about Abbott not challenging cities/counties that may not want to allow those businesses to open yet. I guess we'll see.

Watch this summer be one of the coolest Texas has ever experienced in recorded history.

Yeah, we haven't had a hot day yet here, which is highly unusual here as well. This weather is weirding me out.

Here is why the PPP loans arent going to do much good

Right now, in Louisiana, being on unemployment pays the equivalent of $38,500 after taxes (more if you elect not to have taxes taken out). Just to break even, your job pay would need to be about $50,000 a year (depending on deductions).

So if a business gets the PPP now, after having to furlough employees, if the employees wont come back because they are making the same or more on unemployment, there is no forgiveness and the business is on the hook paying the whole loan back in 2 years

Which is OK for corporations like Ruths Chris or the Lakers who didnt need this money in the first place. Funny how that is working, huh?
