I want no part of Aaron Glenn as a HC (1 Viewer)

Tell that to Shanny , he lost Ryans and can't find a DC to replace him. And guess who is the scapegoat when a HC needs to be fired? The OC. I love how all these DC are great DCs after they get fired as HC but OCs that get fired from HC jobs are trash. Waldron is still a good OC , Dorsey is still a good OC McDaniels was a good OC ( Bad HC) . Quinn has no problem hiring great OCs

If Saleh doesn’t get a head coaching job he goes back to SF as DC.

Dorsey and Waldron are not good. Both fired. Dorsey has been fired twice in the past 14 months.

If Moore was a scapegoat for McCarthy why did offensive production and pts go up after he was fired ?
There were other coaches available from Parcell's coaching tree, they picked Payton because of his attention to detail and drive not because of his rankings.
If you think that the Lions lost just because of AG's defense then you must have missed the 5 TOs including a pick 6 or else there'd be a pocket passer in the NFCCG.

Yes there is a trend toward more mobile QBs , What , you think DCs will not adjust to that if it becomes the norm?

Then why did it go back down this year? Moore seems to be doing just fine. His offense is playing in NFCCG despite a rather pedestrian season from Hurts.
Payton was also Parcell's assistant head coach... Yes his attention to detail played a big part but he was also a young bright offensive mind that was also a QB coach. The same kind of coach we should be trying to find.

Other DC's have adjusted to it. They play more zone, have smaller faster DE's that can help contain the QB. DA's defense isn't built for that and now you want a continuation? lol. If it was one game with Glenn then whatever, even though his 12 men on the field on a crucial 4th down was pretty pitiful, but like has already been pointed out, his defense hasn't been all that special. Ever.

LOL Dorsey was a scapegoat to save Stafanski's job. He's the one who developed Allen. in 22 the Bills were the #2 offense ,when he was fired he had the #3 offense. McDermott was in danger of losing his job and somebody had to go.

Waldron was a very good OC in Sea , he was the one credited with Geno's resurgence. He was even getting HC feelers. Waldron is best with a vet QB not someone as erratic as Williams.

I don't think you understand. when a bad HC is failing or one that is struggling the 1st one to go is the OC whether they are doing a bad job or not. Especially if the HC is a D HC. If it's an offensive HC they don't fire the DC they just fire the HC

Saleh is not getting a HC job so he'll probably go back to SF

In 22 Moore had the offense @ # 3 scoring 467pts McCarthy took over in 23 and had the #1 offense scoring 503 pts. This yr Dak was hurt
The Eagles are #8 and the main reason is Barkley is having one of the best yr of any RB EVER.

Payton had the title of Ast HC but he really was the OC and playcaller. His offense never cracked the top 16. SP was not hired because of his offensive ranking it was HIM his drive his ability to motivate.

If you think that with Glenn we would be getting DA 2.0 then you really don't know Glenn. They are completely opposite. When you have SOOO many injuries on defense and you're shuffling in players it's not hard to have a miscommunication, AND some HCs don't let anyone but themselves call TOs

There are only a few systems run on either side of the ball and every coach makes their own tweaks and changes . Just because AG might run a variation of the system that DA ran does not mean it's the same

Even if you have Rod Woodson on one side and Deion Sanders on the other, in this modern game you're going to give up yards and points. Defenses get abused by TEs, slot WRs, and RBs out of the backfield. Some offenses run pick plays over and over and there's not a lot you can do about it.

DA's style of defense can clearly work at a high level. We saw that. But we also saw the resources required to build and maintain that defense. We're not always going to have the most loaded depth chart in franchise history.

You must have missed the whole Cooper Rush having 5 starts in '22 because Dak was hurt. How come McCarthy gets a pass this year but Moore doesn't in '22? He was McCarthy's scapegoat and everyone knows it. The irony is his name has been floated to replace McCarthy in Dallas.

You're discounting Payton's history, he coordinated the Giants 15th ranked offense led by Kerry Collins to the Super Bowl in 2000. He also turned around Dallas' 2nd worst passing offense and made it into a middle of the pack passing offense with a whole bunch of nothing at QB. He was a up and coming offensive mind, not just that he had a strong drive and could motivate players.

No one is comparing Allen to Glenn as people. Yes they are complete opposite. Glenn won't be the abysmal failure that Allen was but he runs a very similar scheme to Allen but with less success. lol. Plus there's the whole offensive coordinator carousel dilemma that even Payton Manning sees as a big problem for young QB's,

A trend occurs with Moore. His offenses aren't bad by any stretch of the imagination. But his QB's always seem to have "down" years while his RB's tend to have up years. I understand Dak had a good year under him, but we've now seen Herbert and Hurts regress underneath him. That's the opposite of what we need. We don't have a franchise QB, we need a coach who can groom a QB into a franchise QB. Considering the last two franchise QB's had down years under him, I don't see why he would be an intriguing candidate unless we want to forego the idea of grooming any franchise QBs at all in hopes that a running game can solely make us a superbowl contender. Which I don't think can happen. Yes the Eagles passing game is in a down year, but the Eagles passing game in a down year is still as the saints passing game in a good game. We need a QB "whisperer".

At this point, my gut feeling tells me its Brady or Ben Johnson and the others is just settling to be relevant again. Some of these coaches, like Glenn and Kingsbury I think wouldn't wield any better results then DA (a team struggling to be .500). Especially Kingsbury. He had 1 good coaching year in Arizona, struggled to work with his franchise QB and struggled to be a .500 team the other 3 years. It's also we documented that his game time adjustments were abysmal.

And here's the kicker. We need to pick a head coach who we can give several years to. Not just 2 or 3. We need to eye for a coach who can be here for a decade and make a superbowl contender. I just don't see that with Glenn, Moore, Kingsbury, McCarthy... The only two candidates available who constantly elevate their players and go toe to toe with superbowl coaches are Brady and Johnson. And Johnson doesn't seem to want anything to do with us, which leaves us with just Brady. Both of em being first time head coaches are going to have some up and downs and learning curves and we gotta stick with it so long as we see progress.

That's a pretty lofty goal, and it will only happen if you get a relatively young first-time head coach who is successful out of the gate (playoffs in the first or second year). Any first-time head coach is going to be a gamble, and I'm fine with that. If they fail, at least we'll have a high draft pick (like top five). For all the talk of Brady people are forgetting he was in Carolina and did not elevate their QBs. Allen was an all-pro guy before Brady got there. I think a lot of you guys are downplaying the importance of motivating a team and doing more with less. Glenn coached up that defense to secure the number one seed with a bunch of third-string guys despite the last game. Nevertheless, I would rather roll the dice with a new guy, and there is no guarantee when you go in that direction.

I thought Brady had four 1k yard receivers in Carolina?

Joe Brady absolutely elevated the QB play with Teddy Bridgewater in Carolina. Teddy had a career year there in Joe Brady's first year and so did their RB. It was the second year with Sam Darnold that didn't go well.

Maybe you don't recall, but that year with Teddy, people on this board were complaining that we let him go, but were also happy for him because it was going so well.

And to be fair, we just watched Sam Darnold do the same things the last few games this season under Kevin O'Connell (who we know is a great coach) that Darnold also did under Joe Brady.

IDK if Sean McVay got the idea from Aaron Glenn, but we saw the Lions in the last game of the season disguise their bliztes and we watched Sam Darnold struggle because of it. Then Sean McVay comes in and did the same exact thing the first playoff game, and Sam Darnold struggled.

I haven't watched any of those Carolina games, but it would be worth consideration that perhaps Sam Darnold super struggles against disguised defenses and perhaps that played a role in that Carolina season.

So let's see , in 2020 the Lions were dead last in D rankings, They added 2 DTs in the 3rd rd in the draft . In 21 they moved up 1 spot without adding much talent. in 22 they moved up another 2 spots , in 23 they jump another 6 spots , adding more talent. They were poised to make a big jump in 24 but were more decimated by injuries on D than we were on O. I don't know what can be expected when you inherit the worst D in the league and don't really add difference makers until yr 3.
What can be expected is producing at least a top 15 defense after four years as DC.

Everything else is excuses I’m not really interested in making for a new HC.
