Just another day in New Orleans (1 Viewer)

Maybe. But by chasing them you guarantee that they will do something that might jeopardize civilians.

But, I am a bit torn on this too because I think the fact that NOPD can't chase is the reason for a lot of the crimes in the city like car jacking, stealing cars, robbery, breaking into cars, etc. And those crimes also put the public at increased risk so maybe it's worth the dangers of the chases if they stop or severely reduce those things?
But the NOPD still couldn’t chase and those crimes went down just like the national average- there doesn’t seem to be an exact corollary between crime and police involvement

Yep. I think those whose initial reaction to more law enforcement in struggling Nola is cynicism need to consider why that is. It's just...weird. Because I'm on the road all day, I happened to be in the flow of two of these incidents by chance. I was absolutely impressed by the coordination and skill with which the pursuit was happening amongst normal traffic. Also the fact that anyone at all was pursuing a criminal was eye opening.

I'll take all the "cowboys" that we can get. I'm sick of living in a sheet hole with no standards of lawfulness. I hate that I'm forced to seriously consider relocating away from family every single year because this city is so broken. New Orleans deserves better.
So you don’t acknowledge that crime had dropped precipitously well before the cowboys arrived

And the cynicism you allude to is actually common sense
Almost every time there is a force buildup, an increase in crime usually returns after the initial ‘show of force’ phase
And that cop money is almost always better spent on youth involvement vs the punishment end
It still stuns me that some of y’all can see the incarceration levels of this state and then argue for more cops - THAT is cynical

And it bears stating that BR and other La city/towns have a similar crime % and yet this is where the dog and pony show performs??

We all want to get to the why of the problem. Yes, we need better education, more summer programs, drug rehab, etc.
But sometimes you need to react to the crime as it is happening and that takes police officers.

Are you saying that we want our police to be like BR and other La city/towns? Because that kind of undercuts your argument here.

So now that crime has made it’s predicted downturn, isn’t this the time to invest in the other things?

We are. Well, the business community is trying.

Not sure if you've heard of the NOLA Coalition but its a pretty impressive effort. And it is based on the idea that we have to both get a handle on crime right now (helping to hire better/more police, NYPD consultants that were hired by local biz leaders in 2022, targeted efforts around the "top 500" bad guys, national search for a new Chief, etc.) AND invest in youth services to address some of the underlying issues. Originally organized by Michael Hecht and GNO, Inc.

We all know we have an absentee mayor and most of the city council is useless so others have to fill the void.

The fact that crime is falling (outside of car thefts) is good - we should keep doing the things that are working.

The Mayor's response - despite the gaslighting I do appreciate that she obviously wrote it herself - it reminds me of Trump's doctor's press release guaranteeing he would be the healthiest President of all time.

Sounds like she is on the road to re-election.

I'll treat the Mayor with respect and dignity as soon as she begins treating others with respect and dignity.
