I don’t think it’s because the Saints don’t want him - I think Underhill is basically saying, there’s no way he’d come for an interview with all the top-tier teams in much better cap condition than us on his heels.
As an ugly guy, you never know if you can get the cheerleader unless you try.

I'm really rooting for Ben Johnson to be a huge bust. He seems to have a massive ego and I'm not sure it's warranted.
How so? He has a really good thing going and wants to be selective in the next situation because when a team is changing coaches it's always going to be a really heavy lift. He's only 38 years old and has plenty of time to be a head coach. Winning on the other hand is something that's really hard to do in the NFL and he has full autonomy in one of the best offenses in the NFL. So I think it's actually really refreshing to see a young coach have enough self awareness to not jump at any HC job and wait for one that feels right. That's how we ended up with Payton instead of the Raiders getting him the year prior.

Based on Mara, Daboll is only getting one more year because "the ability that made him coach of the year didn't suddenly disappear", but also classified his patience as thin. IE Daboll will be given the opportunity to work w/ whomever they draft at QB. If he can't show where that QB is developing and the team isn't producing wins because of it, he's out.
They're applying the Bears method?

It is possible to miss your window though. Slowik isn't expected to be as hot as he was a year ago for instance. There's also a chance he gets fired in the future and wants a job with one of the organizations he's turning his nose up at now. At least Payton interviewed with the Raiders.

Man I'm listening to Cam's exit interview and it's discouraging to hear the lack of respect he received between DA and Todd Grantham. At one point he was told "You're not needed" and that playing 10 snaps "may be his new normal" and he pointed one of those two barbs came from the HC. That's kind of wack, and even more wack when you consider the role he was given resulted in 0 sacks, but once Rizzi came in and combined that w/ moving Grantham he ended w/ 4 sacks.

That's true and that is the risk he seems willing to take. But I don't think him declining certain opportunities means he has a massive ego. It just means that it'll take more than just any offer to pull him away from the great gig he has now. Not everyone needs to climb the ladder that fast just to get fired in 2-3 years.

I hate that strategy. They are going to give a coach on a short leash a new QB and then probably fire him a few months into the season just to have another new coach that is inheriting the last coaches QB. Seems terrible for the coach and the QB.

I'll never understand how the hell we stuck with Allen for so long with this kind of stuff going on.

Agreed. Johnson might be the making the best decision of all of the prospective head coaches by staying put for at least another year.

He could go to what he thinks is the perfect situation, get fired, then want to come here as OC or HC. It's never good to burn bridges. Payton did interview with the Raiders even though Parcells advised him not to take the job. And he didn't sit out two cycles even though we weren't the perfect situation. He wanted the Packers job but still took this one when he didn't get it.

Yep. I'm not mad at Johnson at all because unlike other candidates, he built his brand to basically choose his destiny and not having to end up in a messed up situation. Now, don't get me wrong; the best coaches are the ones that can get a messed up situation and be able to turn it completely around, and are usually the ones to garner the most respect. (I know I do). But there is nothing wrong with bypassing that.

The biggest difference is that Ben Johnson is coaching a NFC 1 seed and has a serious chance to make and win a Super Bowl. Sean Payton was coaching a 3rd place in the East Cowboys team that missed the playoffs. Funny enough, Aaron Glenn was on that Cowboys team.

May not be the #1 seed next year. All it takes is a Goff injury and their season could go down the tubes. Also most coaches get fired eventually. He could be seeking employment with one of the teams he snubs in the future.
