PSA - get your colonoscopy (3 Viewers)

I'm 45 but live in Mexico City. Good news, I checked the recommendations at one of the top hospitals here, and it's age 50! If you want to put it off a bit, come on over!
I still don’t know why people think it’s such a big deal. I mean it’s pretty simple drunk awful tasting stuff, then sit on the can for a couple hours. Just like Friday/Saturday nights in college, you’re just not at a party. Then a quick nap and all is over.

It’s also a very good way to avoid a pretty ugly cancer. Which if you’re not a smoker is by far the major cancer risk, as prostate generally isn’t as aggressive.

Really?

More importantly after having a friend fighting unsuccessfully stage 4 after not getting checked, and having my mom survive with no issues having it discovered early on routine screening this thread makes me happy. Us guys sticking together
Yep. Shoot me your info and preferred beer style.

i keep putting it off, but i really need to, especially since i'm 44. history of colon cancer on both sides of my family. my mom had a colonoscopy around labor day and a polyp was removed.
I did mine around age 37 (i think?). All clear. But I was having all kinds of IBS issues, so it was worth a look.

A friend of ours in Florida was close friends with a fellow Psych D, who had been fighting colon cancer at a young age. Healthy, fit, ate very healthy.

Last year, he raised money by walking an ultra marathon. He was only ae to do about half, but it was past the actual goal to raise the money to help with expenses and raise awareness. He is also a cancer survivor (different kind).

I found out, despite being back in remission late last year, she died this November. Age 37.

I'm not sharing this to raise money for her. I'm just sharing the story.

Get your colon checked. Don't wait for some magic age. Earlier, the better. Also, some "prep" isn't as awful tasting as others.

And yesterday my friend told me that her poop has gone pale this week and she was suffering pressure and pain where her liver is at. That’s the sign that she is now on limited time as the chemo isn’t effecting that particular mass (she has 5 growing) and it’s also the one that cannot be operated on and will kill her.

So yeah if she would’ve had those checkups at 45 since colon cancer runs in her family instead of waiting until it grew so big that it completely blocked her intestine maybe this wouldn’t have to happen

I’m not quite of age yet, but some history has caused my doc to go ahead and get this on the schedule.

December 20th for me.
Got it done this morning. 1 polyp. Follow up apppintment in January.
Do yourself a favor and ensure they'll give you general anesthesia. I think it's pretty much a standard practice to do that now, but in case it isn't clear:

You want general anesthesia.

You do not want twilight whatever.

You really do not want the twilight.

Twilight doesn't work for some of us.

So each step of the process was, for me, actually progressively worse. First it was being hungry yesterday, then the miralax kicked in and that was a tough time, but not unbearable.

This morning. they put me about as far under as I could be (don’t remember anything after asking the doc what he was injecting - propofol). But the recovery from the anesthesia has been tough today.

The appointment was at 9:15 this morning. As of 4:51pm today, I still have a splitting headache and thick, covid-like mucus I’m coughing up and blowing out my nose. I finally was able to drink some Powerade an hour or so ago that gave me enough energy to eat a single chicken tender, but still haven’t really eaten yet.

I can feel myself getting progressively better every few minutes but the anesthesia has been the toughest part.

My butt doesn’t even hurt, lol.

All that said, I’d still do it again in a heartbeat. I’m not getting colon cancer, dangit.

Oh man, I'm sorry to hear that. I'm glad that you got it done and they got that polyp out of there. You don't want to mess around with those things.

Too easy. :hihi:

Congrats on the cancer free pooper!

Message me if you want some Colo beer. Sounds like you've earned it.

So, I went to the doctor recently and she gave me 3 options, 1) stool sample - basic test 2) stool sample - more advanced DNA testing or 3) colonoscopy - general anesthesia. I went with number 2. If there are issues found with the test, then will go with the colonoscopy. We'll see how it goes.

Here’s the thing Dave. The stool sample detects blood in the stool, which means more than likely the cancer is already there. The DNA testing is good if there is a genetic portion to it. My friend who is near death from this has a genetic issue. But, what these two tests don’t get is the removal of the polyps which can take care of the cancer before it starts. Since my mom had colon cancer (at 71) the doctor only gave me the option of colonoscopy. I was fine with it.

Personally, with my background the colonoscopy is the way to go. No it’s not fun, but it is effective.

Yeah, if there were some family history of it, I definitely would have gone with the scope. I'll probably do it regardless next year.
