The Taysom Hill deal was for 21 million dollars! (2 Viewers)

There is an expectation that he will be the starting QB next season. That is a lot of money for what he is doing now. The length isn't that bad though if the starting QB gig doesn't pan out. Also the league expects a jump in the salary cap with the new television contract coming up in a year or so.

You obviously can’t consider that much of Hill’s money to be QB, at least not for 2020. He likely won’t play that much QB.

You’re getting all of the rest of what Hill brings for that money.

I think the bigger concern is 2021. Since we don’t have much cap space this year I’m betting the majority of that contract is going on the 2021 cap. And I’m thinking Drew will count a lot on the 2021 cap even if he retires. We very well could have 30-40 mil in cap space going to the QB position with Taysom and Tommy as the only QBs.

I would have believed your position before signing Winston but now I don't know what SP is planning. TH still has not proven he can run the offense like Drew, so we will see.

Let's be fair, not many people on the planet that have ever lived can run the offense like Drew... that's why he's Drew. The offense will be different when Taysom takes over... and will have the possibility to be even more dynamic because of what Taysom brings as a threat to run or pass, and his ability to extent plays / makes plays when something breaks down and ad-lib.

The signing of Winston is for this season... There is no sense in making Taysom the #2 this year with Drew here.... It's pretty simple, if Drew has to miss a few games for any reason... You have a 2 QB system where Taysom and Winston split the duties, and you can still use Taysom is the role hew had last season... If Drew is out for the year for some reason, Taysom is your starter and Winston is your backup.

He may play multiple roles but he's not filling the snaps of all those roles. Secondly most of those postions would be on minimum or rookie contracts, so 0.6-1 mil. A 10mil player should be giving you at least top 4-5 snaps.

With his special teams snaps he had more than Jared Cook who makes 8mm.

Here's the bottom line. If you truly believe a player is your future starting QB, you don't give him a two year, 10.5mm per year deal. That's what you give a guy that you've told will compete for it next year, that gives both the team and him an out when he gets beaten out by a real QB for the third year in a row.

I can add that the Saints wanted to do 3 years and Taysom wanted 2.

Which also makes sense.... what if Drew does a Farve and keeps coming back every season... and plays until Brady decides to retire?

Taysom likely wanted a shorter deal in case that happens.

If Drew has retired this off-season, I’m pretty sure Taysom would be our starter now and his deal would have been for 3 or 4 seasons.

Part of this money is for being underpaid last year. We might win two or three fewer games without him last year.

I'm not talking about Drew's ability as a first ballet HOF guy, I'm talking about the offense that SP runs. TH has never demonstrated that abilty, and I don't think Sean wants to change his offense to that. The Ravens brought in a new OC to fit LJs style ans Sean would have to that. Winston is a better traditional QB than Hill on any day. I'm just saying Taysom may want to call Aaron and ask him how it feels to think your the guy but have a team bring someone like Winston. Nevertheless, we'll see.

I don't see him earning that 10.5 mil this year. So he will earn the majority of it next year. That puts him in the price range of experimental starting QB in 2021.

He's going to be our franchise QB once Drew retires... In many of our games last season, he was the best player on the field and it was obvious... I'm not sure what more some of you guys need to see. He literally excels at everything he's been asked to do, and he does all it it with the confidence and swagger of a franchise player. Why would it be any different when he lines up under center full time at some point? If fact, why wouldn't he be even better given more opportunities and experience? Look I get it, we've been somewhat spoiled here by watching one of the best to ever do it here for a long time. But Taysom will be given the keys to the car after Brees is done... and when he does... like with most Franchise QB's on their first real contract... $10.5 million a season will seem like a bargain.... and in 2022... we'll be discussing how much his next deal will kill us for.

A lot of that is true, but the thing we haven't seen him do is run the offense on a consistent basis or throw with accuracy. Even the big play to Harris in the Vikings playoff game was an under throw. And running a few plays here and there is a lot different than facing a defense that has specifically game planned to defend you. That's one big reason it could be different and when he has played in preseason, he has gotten better, but we still haven't seen him play a really great game where he dominates another teams' backups.

I'm not saying he can't be the starting QB. But it's no sure thing. And signing Winston and only giving Hill a two year deal certainly seems to indicate that the Saints want to give themselves some time to see if Hill can develop as a QB before having to commit to Taysom Hill, franchise QB.

Load management for Drew in a 3-QB system. Look for Taysom to play more QB snaps on offense than normal.

That's not how math works. If you go to the fireworks stand and buy 1 firework for $21 and get 20 fireworks free, you didn't get 20 free fireworks. You got 21 fireworks for a dollar each.

He is being paid 10.5 per year over two years. Back loaded for cap reasons.
