The Taysom Hill deal was for 21 million dollars! (3 Viewers)

Kind Sir, do you forget posting this response to tjharris on Feb 10th where you said tjharris lost his mind for saying Taysom would get 7.5-8 Million per year. Now you say this amount is what you expected?

I mean, he’s not technically wrong. Taysom ISN’T making $12 million per year. I don’t get your point.

To be fair, he's NEVER been given that chance. Are we really going to sit Brees for a few series so Taysom can show what he can do?

Maybe this year we do. I think it would benefit both guys to share/split time some.

Not if we're trying to win this year. Look at his college career can we honestly say he was great in college? What are we basing the assumption that he will be a good QB on? Is he a great football player? Yes but I don't see franchise QB. People seem to focus on Winston's INT's but looking at Hill's college stats he was an INT machine (43 TD's & 31 INT's).

What I'm hoping will happen is that if Brees retires after we win the Super Bowl this season, Coach Payton has a competition between Hill, Winston, and whoever else is on the roster and let the best man win.

That's college. Peyton Manning threw 26 INTs his rookie year. Indy should have stopped there!

Don't twist my words, I'm not saying Taysom is Manning. But players do learn and CAN improve, it's impossible.

It's extraordinarily rare for a quarterback with terrible accuracy to develop even adequate NFL accuracy. In terms of sub 60% college passers who ever made it in the NFL, you're talking about Michael Vick who is possibly the best athlete in the history of the NFL and can't be compared to anyone, and Lamar Jackson. And Lamar Jackson's football IQ (as a quarterback) is light years beyond Hill's. Jackson makes much, much better decisions with the football than Taysom does.

But think of it as 2 players. He fills the position of 2 players, QB2 AND Joker 1 and we’re paying him 21M to fill both instead of paying 2 other people to fill both of those rolls.

That's not as bad a way to think of it. QB2 takes no snaps and makes 5 mil/yr. Limited Joker snaps makes 5 mil/yr.

I still see two problems with that though.
1. If he ever has to fill his QB2 role he then loses the Joker role. He can only ever fill one role at a time.
2. You have to have assets in another QB2 type guy because of the risk. Plus assume other guys can step up snaps to fill his Joker snaps.

You can bet most of Taysom’s 21mil is on next year since we didn’t have much cap space for this year and we needed to create space to sign Jameis. The question is how much Drew counts next year if he retires. He currently has a cap number of 36mil next year.

Yeah I’m just noticing that teams that are paying top QBs are shelling out 32-35 mill a year on them individually, when we collectively have been paying our entire QB room the same amount. Makes it not that bad when you put it in perspective.

Wilson makes 35/year, Big Ben 34, Rodgers Ryan etc 33. Last year we paid less than that for Drew Taysom and Teddy combined. Long as Drew gives us hometown discounts, whatever we pay our backups isn’t really hurting us because there’s a 10 mill cushion there. We’re still under or on par with teams with an established franchise QB and we are getting better production.

Are we reading the tea leaves correctly?

Most of us assumed that Taysom received no offer sheets and that he would be forced to sign his tender for $4.641 million. A lot of us were saying that was about what he is worth and some even thought that was too much. Those that said he was worth a lot more were roundly laughed at.

Instead he signs a two year extension for $22 with incentives. Think about that. They could have had him for $4.641 million this year. So one way to view this is that the saints just offered Taysom $17 million for 2021.

Maybe just maybe he had teams willing to sign an offer sheet and a combination of wanting to be Drew's heir and the Saints desire to pay bigger dollars to keep him is why no offer was signed. Maybe it was a conscious decision to pass on potential offers.

I'm just thinking , if there really was zero league interest in Taysom and the Saint only think of him as a gimmick play man, why would the Saints throw $17+ million at him for one more year?

There has to be more that we don't know about this situation.

Go check Taysoms completion % in preseason and get back to me. College doesnt mean much considering he was injured all the time and he was a running QB.

The Saints wanted to sign him to a 3 year deal and Taysom said only 2.

Any team that made him an offer would’ve had to be willing to give up a 1st round pick. A 1st round pick for a 30 year old quarterback with 0 NFL starts and 13 pass attempts. I think it’s safe to say he had no offers.
