My post was a link to a news story about a different person.

Please feel free to share stories about others in the city who are vacationing on our dime, especially anyone who has been caught pilfering public money for political expenses

But if the mayor or her administration is off limits in this thread then yeah it should probably be closed

This board has a no politics policy- I take a very broad approach to this and feel any discussion of race, gender, religion, et al is halal because there are more sociocultural
And even clowning on a politician caught doing extracurricular (non-governmental) shenanigans also seems fair game
A mayor doing mayor stuff is about as political as you can get - which seems a clear violation of one of the top rules of the board

And to reiterate for the manyth time - I’m not stanning for her in any wayshapeform- she’s bad news
But singling her in a city that is not the worst city but in a state that is the worst state while not acknowledging that many/most city problems are state problems

While the board generally has a no politics policy, that doesn't mean there isn't room for discussion of NOLA related issues that are intertwined with politics. Take the Covid threads as an example. That human health topic is loaded with politics, but it still needs to be discussed from a health care perspective, yet it's not a rigid anti-politics approach, but rather recognizing there are some aspects that can be discussed without getting mired in a political back and forth. It gets a bit too political at times and we try to nip that in the bud when it happens.

The same goes for local issues. Crime, policing, the Saints, economy in NOLA are all at least in part affected greatly by public policy and leadership. Notice no one here has said anything really partisan. The discussion has been specifically about the behavior of the city's public servants and imo should be part of the discussion about the health of the city.

What you didn’t address is my contention that if one is addressing NO issues (via Cantrell) and NOT addressing the fact that so many of the city problems are state problems; then it’s hard to take the ‘concerned with the city’ position seriously- it’s clearly way more about taking shots than a discussion of the issues

If I may, I would like to give a perspective up for thought. This is strictly about this thread and it's purpose. To be clear I don't live in the city but it holds a very special place in my heart. I am heartbroken to see the downfalls.
I don't see this discussion as a political one, I see it as an emotional one.
Just another day in NO - the title itself implies a certain amount of defeat.
Each one of us are human beings with human emotions. When we see injustice, unfairness, suffering we become angry, helpless, sad, indignant, this list goes on.
We have rules here, and should. But the more important matter is that we can come here to express our feelings within reason, it's healthy and crucial to our well-being.
Everyone expresses their emotions in different ways and we should support one another. Just because a politician's name is brought up doesn't make it a political discussion, that would be like saying talking about an oak tree makes it a forest discussion.
I don't know, I guess what I'm trying to say is that if we keep the thread allow it be more like therapy session rather than a give and take my opinion versus your opinion.
People need to let it out, individually we don't have the power to fix a city, but we do have the power of listening, it's one of our greatest and most important gifts.

The relationship between the state and city have been addressed numerous times, so I don't really buy that. There may be some who are not addressing the point, but I think most of the regulars here recognize the state to city issues.

Again, I maintain that Cantrell and other officials are getting the lion's share of the criticism because they represent the city. If it's someone else and they act in embarrassing ways, well, they'll get that same criticism.

And to be sure, blaming the state for the city government's shenanigans doesn't fly. The state isn't going to fix the corruption in the city government.

There was substantial discussion about how much the state affected Jackson's decision making process. Some certainly approached the topic in a way that didn't account for state influence. That said, the cities still are responsible for what they're responsible for. Despite the state influences, cities still have to own up to the policies that aren't working for them.

Clearly, none of these things exist in a vacuum and it takes some objective assessing to determine cause and effect of policies, but when official is making questionable decisions, it's not too hard to say that the state didn't make them do that.

I once considered Ray Nagin a close friend. We attended church together and many of us at church tried to talk him out of running for mayor. We still supported him until he got entrenched on the wrong side of things. I wish he could've been recalled as well for the shadow he cast on the city. But the feds got him and I hope they get Cantrell and her ilk too.

It shouldn't be that way though. If a mayor, regardless who they are, misbehaves or is derelict in their duties, they should be criticized. It's always been that way and should always be that way. Comes with the territory.
