Remember that time Terrell Owens, struggling to put a tough Dallas Cowboys loss behind him during a postgame interview, broke down defending his teammate and quarterback, Tony Romo?

Owens warned the media that piling all the blame for the loss on Romo would be unfair, and suddenly the moment overwhelmed him and left him battling tears. “That’s my quarterback,” he said plaintively, launching a million or two memes and kickstarting another round of conversations about his own well-being.

The moment seemed odd when it happened way back in 2008, particularly coming from the rarely empathetic T.O., and yet I found myself thinking about it when I watched footage of Spencer Rattler smiling and nodding in determination when he learned last weekend that he’d been drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the fifth round of this year’s NFL Draft.

"That’s my quarterback." ...

Locks, long shots, and Saints on the roster bubble after the NFL draft

It looks like we’re in for a competitive New Orleans Saints training camp. Right now, the team has 91 players on its 90-man roster (not counting International Pathway kicker Charlie Smyth, who has a roster exemption) after the signing of free agent defensive back Will Harris, so someone is going to be waived soon to maintain compliance with NFL rules.

But this is part of the process leading up to roster cuts in September, when the Saints will have to whittle down their depth chart from 90 names to just 53. And everyone is preparing for this summer’s training camp with different stakes. Some of them are locks to make the team. Others are long shots. And there’s a sizeable group in the middle, on the roster bubble, whose future could go either way.

Let’s break it down further by position groups, with rookies’ names underlined for emphasis:

The New Orleans Saints have some openings at the wide receiver position, with several undrafted rookies who can make a compelling case to round out the depth chart. The team brought in Slippery Rock receiver Kyle Sheets to compete for one of those spots after the 2024 draft. He’s a strong candidate having finished his college career with 154 receptions, 2,440 receiving yards, and 29 touchdown catches. At 6-foot-3 and 217 pounds with a

Are the Saints set up make the playoffs in 2024?

The last time New Orleans Saints made it to the playoffs, Drew Brees was their quarterback. That was 2020. The last three years New Orleans has been a mediocre team that hovers around a .500 winning percentage. Will this be the year they end their playoff drought? Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon gave reasons why New Orleans will succeed or fail in this endeavor.

My prediction is the Saints will find themselves outside of the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year. While the Klint Kubiak system is designed to be quarterback-friendly, Derek Carr has struggled in his first year of multiple...

What If: Saints pulled off trade down with Rams on draft day

The New Orleans Saints are feeling pretty confident in their 2024 draft haul. They came away with the best player at their most important position of need in Oregon State right tackle Taliese Fuaga, a Day 1 starter with Pro Bowl potential (and who has made a big fan in future Hall of Fame offensive lineman Jason Kelce). But things could have turned out very differently them in this year’s draft.

What if the Las Vegas Raiders hadn’t drafted Georgia tight end Brock Bowers at No. 13, opening the door for the Saints to consummate a trade they were discussing with the Los Angeles Rams?

Mickey Loomis: Saints not shopping Marshon Lattimore

The New Orleans Saints drafted Alabama cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry in the second round a few days ago, which led to speculation that Marshon Lattimore may be the target in trade talks with other teams. However, according to general manager Mickey Loomis, this is most definitely not the case, and the Saints are not currently looking to trade Lattimore at all.

In an interview with Adam Schein on his SiriusXM “Schein on Sports” podcast, Loomis discussed the topic of Lattimore and any considerations he is currently making.

“I’m not actively trying to trade Marshon, Marshon, you know, such...

Left tackle labeled the Saints' biggest weakness after NFL draft

The New Orleans Saints addressed a few holes in the NFL draft, most notably selecting Oregon State right tackle Taliese Fuaga in the first round. There’s no team without a weakness, and some teams have more than others. The Saints find themselves in the latter position.

New Orleans entered the draft with too many holes to fill with their premium draft picks. You could argue they chose to not fill prominent voids for players who may have their largest impact in future seasons. Bleacher Report’s Matt Holder assessed the condition of all 32 teams’ rosters after the NFL draft. He feels left...

Earlier this week, we asked our readers which New Orleans Saints draft pick would have the most impact this season and do you think the Saints were winners or losers in this year's NFL Draft?

With an overwhelming 73% of the votes, our readers said that the Saints 1st round draft pick (14th overall) OT Taliese Fuaga from Oregon State would make the most impact overall this season. It is no secret that offensive line was high on the priority list and Coach Dennis Allen said he had been impressed with Fuaga since the combine. Fortunately, we will get our first look at Fuaga as well as the...

Saints rookie Taliese Fuaga has a big fan in 7-time Pro Bowler Jason Kelce

They say it takes one to know one, so an endorsement from a seven-time Pro Bowler is worth noting. Longtime Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce only needed a single rep to believe the New Orleans Saints got a special player in Taliese Fuaga, their first round pick in the 2024 draft.

“There’s guys that even when they’re playing the highlights on draft day, you’re like, ‘Oh, yeah,'” Kelce recounted on the New Heights podcast with his brother Travis Kelce. “There was one tackle that got picked early out of Oregon State. I saw like one pass set, I’m like, ‘Yep. Oh yeah.'”

Which Saints rookies were at the Senior Bowl, Shrine Bowl?

We always make a big deal out of the Senior Bowl and Shrine Bowl while gearing up for the NFL draft, and for good reason: the New Orleans Saints scout these events heavily. Seeing prospects competing against their peers means a lot to Mickey Loomis, Jeff Ireland, and their college scouting department. So how many rookies in the 2024 class were participants?

Of the Saints’ seven draft picks, all but two participated in one of the two major all-star games. Second-round cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry was an underclassman while fifth-round linebacker Jaylan Ford declined his invitation to the Senior Bowl. The Saints have signed 16 rookie free agents who were not selected, and a third of them competed at either the Senior Bowl or the Shrine Bowl.

Grading the Saints 2024 Draft Class

The NFL Draft just wrapped up on Saturday, and despite not seeing any of the guys touch an NFL field yet, it seems like the New Orleans Saints did a pretty good job in this year’s draft.

Now that the draft is officially over and we know all seven of the Saints picks, let’s go through each one and give them a grade based on how good I think the pick was.

The Saints absolutely nailed their first pick in the draft by selecting Taliese Fuaga with their first pick. Obviously, I had Joe Alt as my No. 1 rated offensive tackle, but after him, I thought Fuaga and Olu Fashanu were 2A and 2B.

Why the Saints drafted them: Round 5

The New Orleans Saints drafted three players in round 5: Spencer Rattler, Bub Means, and Jaylan Ford. There are many different reasons why the Saints selected these prospects, some similar and some very different.

At pick 150, the Saints selected Spencer Rattler. This pick was considered a head-scratcher, but there are many reasons why the Saints did this. Spencer Rattler was one of the most polarizing prospects throughout the draft process. The topic of character issues clouded any conversation that was based around Rattler. The Saints do not like to draft players with character or...
