Jonathan Vilma Arrested - Confirmed (3 Viewers)

This is a non-issue unless details come out that haven't been revealed that contain much worse behavior than whats been reported.

Now, I am not saying that this is what happened. But imagine you're Vilma: young, rich and Black and you get pulled over for no apparent reason. You are feeling that in this day and age, the police have to have just cause to do something like this. Maybe he was outraged or maybe it was completely his fault. But what I am saying is that people have a tendency to pass judgement based upon their own experiences.

And with all of that, I would like to hear ALL of the details prior to passing any sort of character judgement on the guy, who so far by all accounts is a stand-up individual.

from the nola article on the arrest it says:

Police said Vilma had been in his Range Rover weaving through traffic, ran a red light and was arrested after an exchange with police and refusing to move away from his vehicle, the report said.

whether or not the report is accurate is another story but if true, along with other reports that he almost hit 2 people behind the wheel of his car, it definitely sounds like they had cause to pull him over if it is all true.

Good post.

I find it interesting that some of the other current/former law enforcement officers here have already jumped to a lot of conclusions despite a lack of information... NYCSaintsFan, do you have insider info that would make you "lose all respect" for Vilma already?

Thanks had a lot of problems with the way some officers acted towards citizens that's one of the reasons I quit. But let me say that for every one officer that is over zealuos there are 50 that are good officers.

makes you wonder though, if Vilma really did almost hit two people and run a red light, why didnt the cop just tell him thats why he was pulled over when Vilma asked? Seems kinda strange to me.

The fact that you're spending your time creating fantasy scenarios where JV is the victim should speak for itself.

No , the point , which you've missed , is that I don't know what happened , and I'd like to before I make a judgement . I clearly portrayed two scenarios and declared the likelyhood of the truth being between them . Agenda much ?

I do not work in law enforcement, but I would guess that the first priority is to control and assess the situation. Again I am not well versed with personal experience, but that is my understanding. Control the situation and then assess the situation. Answering questions is down the list.

That's the problem: a lot of cops aren't upstanding citizens fighting the evil of the world. They're normal people who make the same stupid mistakes us non-cops do and they have bad days like everyone else. On the whole, most street cops are high school graduates at best and many of them have authority issues (as in, they like to exert theirs). The smarter ones move on to be detectives. Cops are also mostly good people, but that job also has a tendency to attract more scoundrels than a normal non-authoritative job due to the power it involves. It also doesn't take much to become a police officer.

For a prime example, look at the history of the Orleans Parish Police Force. I'm not saying everyone in the OPP, and I'm not saying all the time (so no one get your panties in a wad) are corrupt, but come on people! I spent 24 hours in lockup myself for running a stop sign (the reason they pulled me over) as I moved my car from in front of my house to park it around the corner (about 50 feet away - within visual distance). The interesting thing? THERE WAS NO STOP SIGN facing my direction - it was facing the cross street...which, interestingly enough, the police crusier promply ran. This is an "honest" mistake by the police? No. This is a holy-er than thou self mandate. It was one of the final straws that made me leave New Orleans.

It's similar to those who become actors. Most of them do so because they can't do anything else.
THIS I take offense to. We do it because we love the creative process. What you are describing is a freeloader. I'm not, nor have I ever been. Do you realize that the MAJORITY of actors make slave wages? And CHOOSE to do so, so they can continue doing something they love? You obviously don't know whereof you speak (about actors and the profession at least - you obviously understand the police!).

Lots of assumptions made on this thread.
1. Vilma was drunk or on drugs.
2. The cop was white and was engaging in racial profiling.
3. The incident took place in South Beach. (Did it?)
4. University of Miami players tend to be thugs.
5. The news report is 100% accurate.
Some of these assumptions have proven to be conclusion-jumping. Not a lot of them have been verified.

We don't know if the officer told him or not. Either way, you just do what you're told and you can avoid these types of situations.

Just like the story of the biker who hit the cop, after a video turned up it was the cop who went after the guy on the bike...Good for Vilma. The police are just men like the rest of us and have no power over a free man.

I've been pulled over somewhere around 15 times. Sometimes its just a window conversation and others they have me step out of the car. Either way when I'm asked to step out of the car, it's not the time to demand doing things my way or explanations of what is going on.

For their safety the officer cannot assume you're Johnny Do-gooder who messed up their first time. Based on this info it was a bad move on Vilma's part to question the officer's reqeust.

well you can defend him all you want to..... his actions were wrong and reckless. i really hope you understand that and do not think its ok to drive or act like he did.....

How do you know? Were you the arresting officer? You were not there. You are simply basing your assumption on the report given. None of us was there. We have not heard Vilma's side of the story. Rather than jump to conclusions, we all need to just chill out. Vilma could very well have been a hothead. But the Miami police, notorious for pulling over athletes, could also have been acting out of sorts. We don't know.
