Texas, the new Florida (2 Viewers)

Having lived the majority of my life in New Orleans I thought that I would hate living in Houston/Texas, but as crazy as this place seems, it’s actually quite fine. Sure your trading good food and activities for great education, and lower taxes, but it balances itself out somehow between kolaches and brisket.
Houston is cool. Texas is still stupid though.

kolaches are good, but not live-in-texas good.
For sure, and I would take a Blue Dot/Bakers Dozen donut over a kolache any day of the week, but it’s like what Corky St. Claire said “It's like in a Hitchcock movie, you know, where they tie you up in a rubber bag and throw you in the trunk of a car. You find people.”

I’ve never been to College Station, but I hear the best offerings are found at Double Dave’s. I’ve had Double Dave’s here in Spring, and I’m sorry.

Spent a decade of my life in Houston and never tried a kolache.. just never tempted me.

The key to Houston, like most huge cities, is to find your spot and exist as much as you can in your bubble .. we were in River Oaks (not the old money $5 million mansion part, but the part nearby with more moderately priced homes) and had super-nice new HEBs, Whole Foods and Krogers within a very short drive.. a couple of El Tiempos, some good bars and restaurants and.. a new Costco.. a couple of great dog parks and a good doggie day care and.. i mean, what else do you need? The thing about Houston though, is that there is absolutely NOTHING unique about it.. there’s nothing to do there that you couldn’t do in Cleveland or St. Louis, without sweating your arse off as much…. but it’s a very liveable city, as long as you can insualte yourself in your bubble, avoid having to commute and invest in a very, very good air conditioning system.

double dave's is terribly bad. wings'n more isn't bad though, but i don't think it originated in cs.

This is what I do. Stay in my bubble of roughly no more than 5-10 miles as much as possible. I live in Mesquite (east part of DFW) and my wife and I both work for the local school district. I hate getting anywhere near Dallas proper. Fun fact: you can drive in any direction (I'm assuming from the center) in DFW for an hour and still be in DFW.

With or without traffic? Cuz, you can get from downtown Dallas and head east to Greenville in about an hour. Is Greenville considered as part of DFW? You can also get from downtown, head south to just about Hillsboro in an hour. That's definitely not DFW.

Desks make students feel uncomfortable- industrial toilet paper, girls make boys uncomfortable and vice versa, dodgeball, walking across campus, Texas heat, picture day, prom…the entirety of a teens life is uncomfortable
Krause, who chairs the state’s House Committee on General Investigating, also directed the districts to identify “any other books” that could cause students “guilt, anguish, or any other form of psychological distress because of their race or sex or convey that a student, by virtue of their race or sex, is inherently racist, sexist, or oppressive, whether consciously or unconsciously.”

Man, that's an extremely wide net he's trying to cast. How about just put every book in schools in a giant pile, and take a flamethrower to it. Wait, I think I read that in a book. Fahrenheit 4-something or other.

Some of these types of shenanigans are taking it's toll on educators. My wife told me recently she's thinking about quitting and finding something else outside education. If an educator says something that a student may misconstrue, the student could tell their parent, and it's not hard to see some parents getting enraged, raising hell about it, and then the story gets spread on social media and next thing you know, you're name is everywhere and possibly drawing the attention of traditional media. The stress isn't worth the wage.

‘White privilege and fragility is not a thing’
