New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees left no doubt about how he feels about his adopted home state of Louisiana during the Walk-On’s Independence Bowl Kickoff Dinner last week at the Shreveport Convention Center.

“Louisiana is home,” said Brees, a Texas native. “My wife, Brittany and I, going back to 2006 when we first came here, we had no idea what to expect, but from the moment we stepped foot in New Orleans — really just this entire state — we’ve been welcomed with open arms. Such a special community and such a special group of people, different maybe with many other places, generations upon generations of people who have been involved in Louisiana.

“I was told very early on if you love Louisiana they’ll love you back. There’s truth to that. We’ve just tried to immerse ourselves in the community in a way that we can give back to New Orleans, give back to Louisiana.”

Brees and Brittany, who have four children, started the Brees Dream Foundation in 2003 to support cancer patients and research. The foundation also helps to provide assistant to Hurricane Katrina rebuilding projects.

NEW ORLEANS — Darren Rizzi says it is his goal to become an NFL head coach. He's now got eight games to show what he can do as the Saints interim coach. Injuries and a roster that had no depth, play a role in Dennis Allen getting fired and Rizzi has to battle through the same issues.

His team could get a little healthier for the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Rizzi was named interim head coach on Monday after the Saints fired Allen following the team's seven-game losing streak.

The Saints started practicing under Rizzi on Wednesday.

Saints' most important offensive starter returns after early-season injury

This could be big. The New Orleans Saints haven’t won a game since Pro Bowl center Erik McCoy got hurt back in Week 3, which put him on injured reserve after undergoing groin muscle surgery. But their most important offensive starter returned to practice on Thursday, at least on a limited basis.

It’s still probably too soon for McCoy to get back into a game; his initial timeline had him returning to the lineup after the bye week. There’s a chance he could return sooner, and opening his 21-day practice window may indicate he’ll be back sooner rather than later.

There were two big changes to the New Orleans Saints injury report ahead of Week 10’s game with the Atlanta Falcons. Two starters on injured reserve returned to practice, one of them receiving an upgrade to full reps — safety Will Harris (hamstring). Another, center Erik McCoy (groin), practiced on a limited basis. McCoy’s return is likely a week away or more but that’s a big step in the right direction.

Other than that, it’s more of the same. Wide receivers Chris Olave (concussion) and Cedrick Wilson Jr. (shoulder) still didn’t participate. Neither did cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry...
