The Secrets of a Linebacker

By Andy Benoit -- Sports Illustrated

Saints linebacker Craig Robertson is one of those players who keeps finding his way onto the field. Undrafted in 2011 out of North Texas, he spent his first NFL season on Cleveland’s practice squad before getting a chance to become a situational backup and special teamer in 2012. He started three games for the Browns in 2012 and then 61 of his next 73 games, including 27 of 31 since signing with the Saints in 2016. Initially a safety in college, Robertson is a finesse linebacker with speed, though he’d never be confused for Deion Jones or Telvin Smith.

Guys like Robertson must play faster than their athleticism. That demands an aptitude for diagnosing plays. We think of this as reading and reacting, but for a linebacker, much of the game takes place before the snap, at the line of scrimmage. Watching his 2017 game against the Rams, Robertson showed me how he sniffs out plays before the snap.

The New Orleans Saints are heading into the final week of the 2024 season and will then kick their search for a head coach into overdrive.

Dennis Allen was fired part way through the season and the keys to the team were handed over to Darren Rizzi, at least temporarily. They now sit with a 5-11 record with a tough game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the horizon. It looks as though a rebuild is in order, but with Mickey Loomis still at general manager.

Early signs indicate that Loomis will mostly be looking at people with some familiarity with the team, which should be of no surprise to Saints fans. That doesn’t mean they won’t consider other candidates, though.

With just one game to go, here are the most likely candidates to become the head coach in New Orleans next year:

The New Orleans Saints are entering the last week of their season, which means that the offseason is right around the corner. At 5-11 and without a real identity for the future, the Saints are in a weird spot. A rebuild is likely to start soon, so they likely won’t be bringing a lot of pending free agents back.

There are three types of free agents:

  • UFA: Unrestricted free agents who can entertain offers from other teams, but who are eligible for the franchise tag
  • RFA: Restricted free agents who the Saints can match offers for from other teams
  • ERFA: Exclusive rights free agents who can only play for the Saints on a minimum salary

So keep that in mind as we run through the list of 21 pending free agents for New Orleans:

Hard to believe it’s already over but yes, it is Week 18, and the New Orleans Saints (5-11) will close out the 2024 season on the road to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-7) in Raymond James Stadium.

According to FanDuel, the Saints are currently 13.5-point underdogs against the Bucs. The over/under is currently 43.5 points but there is sure to be...

Ups and downs from Saints vs. Raiders

The New Orleans Saints were embarrassed on Sunday losing to the then 3-11 Las Vegas Raiders. Unfortunately for the Saints, their draft position didn't improve and there wasn't much good to build on. With one game left in the season, New Orleans football is coming to an end for the season, for the better or worse.

Sunday’s loss at home may be Jordan’s final game in the Superdome as the veteran is nearing retirement. Jordan would lead the Who Dat chant in pregame then light the dome up after back-to-back plays, which included a sack. The rest of the day for the Saints legend would be pretty...

The New Orleans Saints signed defensive end Chase Young to a prove-it deal this past offseason and some believe he has done enough to cash in once he hits free agency again in 2025.

Bucky Brooks of NFL.com recently highlighted seven impending free agents that he believed would ‘break the bank’ next season with new contracts and Young was among the players named. This is what Brooks had to say about his prediction.

Young has been an interesting case. He has generated the most pressure of anyone on the defense, and the second-most of his career, but it is still hard to really consider this...

Aaron Glenn is a name you’ll hear frequently connected to the New Orleans Saints The Saints have moved on from Dennis Allen and Darren Rizzi’s replacement bid loses steam by the week. Glenn just feels like the most obvious candidate. Beyond being the most obvious, Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox sees Glenn as the ideal fit for New Orleans.

The reason you’ll see Glenn-to-New Orleans so frequently is his coaching history in New Orleans. Though a valid take, it’s so easy that it can come off as lazy at times.

Knox avoided that pitfall, took it a step further and articulated what makes...

With the New Orleans Saints seemingly locked into another year of Derek Carr under center and in a bad spot to draft a quarterback, could they instead opt to add more weapons for Carr to work with in the 2025 NFL draft?

That’s what Ian Valentino of 33rd Team had them do in a recent mock draft, choosing Missouri Tigers wide receiver Luther Burden III with the No. 10 overall selection. This is what Valentino had to say about his choice:

Burden has had up-and-down production in college, but should still be considered an elite wide receiver prospect. The playmaker has 192 catches for 2,263...

Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski has two receivers who are perfect fits in New Orleans: Ole Miss star Tre Harris and Utah State standout Jalen Royals.

The lack of depth in the New Orleans Saints wide receiver room exposed itself in 2024. The room was clearly carried by Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed coming into the season. Both of those players have dealt with injuries that ended their season or cost them a large amount of time.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling has been a good midseason addition and should be considered for next year’s roster, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Saints...

The NFL announced its finalized slate of Week 18 games, including the regular season finale between the New Orleans Saints and Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for Noon CT/1 p.m. ET on Sunday, Jan. 5.

It’s not surprising to see the Saints relegated to an early time slot in a low-profile day of games; they’ve been eliminated from the playoffs and have been outscored 59-10 over their last two losses. These NFC South rivalry games are always intense but there are more compelling matchups to put in the spotlight.

Still, the Saints have plenty of reasons to...
