Fan favorite Michael Mauti's release came as something of a surprise last week, particularly since it happened only a month after the veteran linebacker re-signed a contract with his hometown in free agency.

Mauti has been a key part of the special-teams units in New Orleans and an emergency linebacker on defense for three seasons, but the veteran got caught in a numbers game.

The New Orleans Saints entered the draft with a whole lot of needs and a healthy number of picks. We thought there was a good chance Mickey Loomis would move up and waste some of those picks, but even he recognized they had more needs than in years past and stayed put for every one of his nine selections. Overall, it wasn’t a super exciting draft class, but it was a good and very necessary one.

Friday night was night two of the 2025 NFL Draft. In the third round, the New Orleans Saints selected Jonas Sanker, a safety out of Virginia.

Here are some things to know about the new kid in town.

In 2020, Jonas Sanker's father, George, received an Alzheimer's diagnosis. This has led Sanker to become a rock for his family.

“He’s helped me grow,” Jonas’ brother Thomas said in an interview with UVAToday. “He’s really easy to talk to. If I ever need anything, I just go to him … girl problems— just anything like that. He’s so good.”
