Andy Dalton is PFF’s 2nd highest graded passer this season (3 Viewers)

OK so maybe he moves up a few slots. He's still way behind on that list. Remember this post is about him being ranked #2
No, it’s not. And I’ve said as much a few times already.

It’s about people thinking he’s been “bad.” He hasn’t been.

The end.

You are just putting out stats.

Is there an objective measure on his personal overall performance that is "good"?

Yeah, like PFF's metrics, whatever the heck those are.

His individual performance is certainly part of the team's record.
1. I’ve literally posted like five “objective” measures. So…yeah.

2. PFF’s metrics are a subjective measure. But the stats I’ve provided are objective.

3. His performance a part of the team’s record just like everyone’s is. In his case, his contributions have been average or slightly above. Not “bad” as many people on here seem to want to believe.

Without reading any comments, I'd say Andy has certainly played well enough to for us to be a playoff team.

If Landry reels in a TD right in his hand or Taysom holds on to the 3rd and long pass we are in first place and quite possibly heading to the playoffs.

I'd definitely bring Andy back if we could convince him to come back. Send Jameis packing. Andy is a more steady, pro. He goes through progressions and we head more than one player say he is always calm no matter what is going on around him.

Injuries are part of the game but they have absolutely crippled us the last two years.

This site has a list of the players that have dropped the most passes, 5 and up. There isn't a single Saint listed. What's interesting is that Kansas City has 2 players listed (even the one with the most drops), the Bills have 2, Miami has 2.... SF, Dal, NYG, LAC, are in there... all of those teams have winning records... even the Jets are there and they are 7-7.

Shhh.... They don't want facts. Only what supports the narrative that he's playing well enough to win and and it's the other 52 players that are causing us to lose.

I've had the luxury of watching the real film of a few of our games. He has missed so many throws and been late on some that led to incompletions or contested catches because he didn't throw with anticipation. I'm sorry, but dinking and dunking doesn't earn accolades with me. This is the NFL not pee wee football. You can't win consistently in this league with a QB that plays this way unless you have a historically great defense. The last few years with Drew should have taught you guys that. You can win until the postseason comes around. Then that approach will fail 9 times out of 10.

And also the names on that list: Travis Kelce, Stefon Diggs, Jamar Chase, Tyreek Hill... even Mike Evans is there. Those guys are bona fide NFL WRs, stars even. So to complain about a hard-to-catch hospital ball that was thrown to Taysom because he didn't come up with it, or because this one pass hit Landry in the hands but couldn't pull it in, like it's happens to NFL star WRs, well...

Now, while I can argue stats with the best of them, I personally don't put that much faith in stats. I believe in what my eyes tell me and the context in which I am seeing what I am seeing. You can get that 10 yd completion, but if that came on 3rd and 11 and you missed the guy open 12 yards past the line, well, good for your stats, I guess... or when I get to the point that I can almost predict the sack because I can see the d-line load and the QB can't... I know a hospital ball when I see one... I can see when the alleged team leader is not leading the team.

And hey, I am not special. Most fans who have watched the game for a long time can tell those things too.

Dalton is not incompetent, but he's mediocre, and in a game where emotions run high, he inspires no one; it's a very different vibe when either Jameis or Taysom are under center.

many times this season I’ve been impressed by Andy making a great throw, often under pressure and into tight windows. In comparison, there are relatively few times I’ve noticed really poor throws. Y’all are so spoiled from all those years with Brees you don’t know what poor quarterbacking even looks like.

that's by far the best of all the answers in this entire thread.

If only he made all those "great throws" in the 2 minute offense, the 4th quarter and in the red zone.

He's the absolute king of useless stats which is why his PFF ranking is so high. He plays it safe and will take an easy completion even if it kills the drive. PFF won't mark him negative for that and it saves his stats for guys like Saint Spud to salivate over.

He's had one successful 2 minute drive this season and hurt us against the Vikings and Cardinals with critical turnovers in those situations. He failed to do anything with a 2 minute drive against the Bengals.

3 and outs in the 4th quarter led directly to the Bucs comeback and gave the Falcons a chance. It put an exhausted defense back on the field against the Bengals which gave them a TD after some missed tackles. Hell even the Steelers were able to merc us in the 2nd half thanks to Dalton's 2 turnovers and zero points scored on offense.

I don't know. Half of you might not agree but I feel Dalton has been decent. He is a back up but most back ups aren't efficient as he is. Sorry he isn't Brees. But Brees was putting up some crazy numbers and we were went 7-9 three years in a row. Take into account our defense has not been good. We are not a discipline team. Lead the league in penalties. We are minus in the turnovers category. We don't create turnovers. Funny enough half of our turnovers have been on the running backs deep inside the red zones, hurting our chances to score. Think about that. Then Andy was throwing the ball well down the field, coaching staffs decided to get away from that and go conservative. Again, Andy is NOT Brees. But take into account other variables onto why we are where we are.

I think that this is where most people should be: Dalton is a good backup, he is not a good starter. He won’t win you games on his own, but he can get you through a stretch where your starter is out. He can also get you through a stretch where you need a bridge for the future QB. And yes, he would have more success with Payton here, because Payton learned from Parcells, the coach that told his QB “If you don’t throw two interceptions today, I’ll be pissed.”

Dalton is an absolute warrior between the 20’s….he is horrible in the RZ….I mean is anyone actually disputing that? He is also pretty obviously not a real on the field leader….He’s not bad, he’s just a good backup QB that our incompetent HC thinks is a starter…..our incompetent HC has done this before….

Well that's the thing. He was brought here to be a back up. People act like he needs to play up to the standard "franchise qb" but to me he played well enough. He isn't a franchise quarterback and someone you can ride on regardless of deficiencies on other areas like Brees. Guys like Dalton at this stage in his career requires all areas to play well, including the coaching staff. Unfortunately, defense has become a weakness and our coaching has ben abysmal. Penalties and turnovers....

I don’t think anyone is expecting Dalton to be a franchise QB, they just want the backup to take a seat for the starter, who is under contract next year and has at least some chance of being the future.

Is he playing bad or horrible. I don't think so. And he isn't the reason why we win or lose either. But that's just my opinion.
