Jake Haener (6 Viewers)

The DB eyed Haener the whole way while Haener eyed the receiver the whole way, and the DB broke on the throw immediately to make the pick. If the ball gets there faster and/or if the QB doesn’t stare down the read, the ball probably doesn’t get picked. I don’t know why he would throw back shoulder against a DB who is playing over the top with cushion and good hip angle, although I’ll point out Haener makes a successful back shoulder throw later against man coverage that looked good.

My point was that the interception had nothing to do with his release or his arm strength. Bad read, obviously, but the ball was still out on time and wasn't a lame duck.

I'll paraphrase Brees about that play: the WR ran that route like a bum.

OK, Brees didn't say that (Altho, he did lay some fault with the WR.)

To me, that WR just trotted down the sideline, never looked back for the ball and seemed to be surprised that the ball came his way.

Not impressed with the WR at all.

Haener look better than these comments. I can’t believe how up and down a fan base can be. First off he is a rookie 4th round pick and just last week comments in here about trading Winston and there is no way Haener clears waivers. Now he get shade for actually playing pretty damn good considering circumstances. The INT was simply miscommunication which is why when they called the same play on next drive it was executed like it should have been on pick. In my eyes he was always going to have to beat out Winston to avoid taking a chance on getting cut and put on practice squad. Nothing has changed he is still a rookie 4th round pick. Trying to play the hardest position in sports. Loved what I saw in him!
That all came from media hype in 7v7's and everyone followed suit. That's why I don't read into the fluff that majority of the media is feeding us and been looking specifically at what Hendrix and @Alan12 have been posting. More "this is what happened" and less opinion. I hope Haener is the real deal because that means the future is set but practice is probably one of the last things that I get hyped about, especially with our reporting.

I got clowned a lot for that initial assessment, so I appreciate the good back and forth on this one. It’s why I’m on SR practically every day, to receive and share different viewpoints on this year’s Super Bowl champion.
I like the way you think!

For one, I am in the middle of everyone's opinion here. I like some things Heaner did and there are things he needs to learn. NFL games are a different beast. Defense will come a lot faster and are very deceptive. The interception throw was actually a very good throw that was well played by the defense. He needs to not try to throw like a 10 year veterans until he understand NFL defenses first. For a guy who has a "weak arm" he sure throw a zip. He gets rid of the ball fast, which I love. The roll out to the right to hit Merriweather for that touchdown is not as easy as it look on tv. Good job by Haener. It is a mix bag with Haener yesterday. He still has a lot to learn. But so far I like his competitiveness. He does look angry out there. Needs to relax a little bit.

I think Haener's release point will be his biggest obstacle. His throws are compact and quick, but he'll need to adjust and release the ball higher at times (we'll definitely see PBUs). He seemed to have good pocket awareness and navigated through defenders well. If he can master finding those passing lanes like Brees, his height shouldn't be an issue.

He definitely doesn't look like Book, Stevens, Grayson, Canfield, etc. I think there might be something to actually work with here for once.

His arm strength was just fine - average to above average.

His biggest issue was accuracy, and I don't know how much of that was due to obviously not being on the same page with his receivers (to be expected at this stage) vs. simply missing throws vs. trying so hard to get the ball out quickly to the point that he rushed several passes. It was probably a little of all three.

He has an uphill battle to become a starting NFL QB with his stature and low release point, but you can clearly see that he has juice and belongs in the league. TBD how it all shakes out, but he's 100% worth keeping on the roster with the new 3rd QB rule and developing for the future. Jameis is probably not on the roster next season.

The WR definitely didn't help matters at all, but that throw was dead on arrival as soon as he started his throwing motion. The DB was in perfect position to make that play, so maybe the WR should have been surprised the ball was on the way.

Still have to fight for it versus watch your QB's throw become another team's highlight.

Even Brees walked his comment back by adding the caveat “of course it’s never the QB’s fault, LOL.”

I have seen mention of the "extra" roster spot for emergency QB. If I am not mistaken this is an extra GAMEDAY roster spot. He would still have to be on the 53 man roster to be put in that emergency roll. If I am incorrect on this or it has already been stated I apologize.

Most concerning things I noticed: He made a scared face when he was intercepted and when the ball was batted down. He needs to chill and settle down and not be emotional.

Best things I noticed: He makes his reads very quickly and the ball comes out. It's very common for rooks to hold the ball too long and bad things usually happen, not a problem with Haener.
good point, Haener was prepared

Exactly the point though, I’m comparing him to a 32yo QB who would be considered a mid tier starter in the league for most of his career. I wouldn’t compare him to top five guys in their prime because almost no one will meet that standard.

It’s very rare for a player to slip to day three with no deficiencies in their game. Haener does seem to process quickly as advertised, but I think his arm will limit him more than most fans want to admit.
Jake's arm is comparable to Brees in his prime, Didn't hinder him did it? This misnomer that you need a rocket arm to be a great QB in the NFL is ludicrous. I can name 10 guys that had cannon arms that were busts. Can you name 10 QB's that were good to great at processing and going thru their reads and knowing where the ball is supposed to go pre-snap that had an above-average arm? Go ahead , I'll wait

Haener is exactly what I thought he would be. Cerebral guy who can make some plays but he will never be a starting QB in the NFL. He will make a career as a backup QB who can come in spot duty to keep the offense moving if the starter go down. You could see alot of the struggles he will have to overcome due to his size. Accuracy will come and go from the pocket. Drew was a unicorn and should never be used to compare every small QB that comes into the NFL. If he was 6 foot 3 he would have been a first round pick and could absolutely be a starter.
LOL your description of Jake could almost have exactly have been written about DB coming out of college. Before Jake decided not to come out in the 22 draft he was rated anywhere between the # 4-6 QB in the draft. If he would not gotten hurt and missed 4 games last yr he very well could have been taken in the 2nd this yr. I have to laugh at people that are pro NFL scouts saying "
he will never be a starting QB in the NFL. He will make a career as a backup QB
I am so glad those people are not on our scouting staff

Fair enough, weak may have been the wrong word, but I think his scouting report was on display during the game, particularly the interception.

I'm just not buying the hype on Haener, who more or less has been crowned as the clear heir apparent for Carr based on training camp reports. A below-average release coupled with below-average arm strength is going to put a hard ceiling on his NFL future, even if he can quickly ID an open receiver.
That was written by Lance Zierlein who has never been a pro scout , coach or player. I love how there are so many so-called experts putting out an opinion that don't have the resume's to back it up. Almost all the scout and Ron Curry that coached him at the senior bowl said Jake has a a very quick release, I watched him more than a few times look off the defender, so the gazes at target too long is BS. Also in every scouting report Jake was praised for his accuracy so the "Needs to be much more consistent with ball placement is wrong as well
