Ryan Clark Calls Sean Payton a Thug (1 Viewer)

Lol at a lot of the comments in this thread. Payton was right. Wilson was cooked and was doing some diva crap with his own trainers and such. Denver had to get away from Wilson.

In 16 years with Sean as HC I haven't heard any racial accusations. Where the hell did that come from?? What I do know is that he has already turned that sorry team around and those spoiled fans should be thankful. Yes, Sean is a thug (from a leadership style perspective), and he's a petty SOB tov boot. When has he ever given a damn about feelings? The only reason this is a surprise is because he is coaching a big market team and he's finally getting national attention. But we should know better. Sean wasted no time cutting Aaron Brooks and Dante Stallworth as well as several other popular players back in 96 in effort to mold his own team. That's exactly what he's doing now.
96?
That started the Ditka years

So if management told you to change a clause in your salary that paid you a lot of money, would you be pissed?

I would

I was reading a lot of comments from different sites yesterday and I can see this turning out really bad for sean. Vets wont be happy with what he's done and there's a lot of different racial accusations being thrown about also. I can see him ending up in a position where free agents do not want to play for him.
I'm a Ryan Clark and LSU fan. Call it what you want but this wreaks of Clark claiming racism. I don't see it that way at all.

I didn't see Drew "kissing babies" at all. That was just never the case. We've known for a while that Russ is a diva. He demanded from his new team to have an office with the execs and be on his own from the rest of the team.

Sean was having none of it. He immediately put an end to it. His message is no one is bigger than the team.

Does Sean always handle things the best? Absolutely not. Does he have a big ego? Without question.

Would we rather have him than probably 80-90% of the coaches in the league including our current HC? No question.

It's a bad look, period. I understand this is a business decision, but the fact that Russ was playing better and the idea that a guy like Russ would waive an injury guarantee is just dumb. Sean has been engaging in theater with Russ as if he were some rook or something. I don't think it's racial or anything like that, but it could have been handled better in public.
Would I have handled this situation better? Maybe but make no mistake Sean knows exactly what he's doing. He's many steps ahead of most of those in that organization and forget how far ahead is he from all of us.

Denver fans wanted to run Russ out of town last season and Sean is now laying the ground work to do just that. I don’t necessarily agree with how he’s doing it, but I don’t think the fans care much about what their players that have gotten used to being losers think about it. Sean will make winners out of players or get rid of the ones who resist. Either way, there is no doubt who is boss in that locker room.

Yeah I don't get it... This is what they wanted

I would be the happiest fan in the world if Sean Payton came back to coach the Saints. The Broncos are very lucky to have him. He is a great coach and a good person. I got to know him a little through his foundation. He did all he could for New Orleans and we should all be eternally grateful. He will turn the Broncos into a winner if they let him coach without limitations.

Miami is winning a lot and every player in that locker room loves being on that team.

You can have both, tough love ain’t the only love or we’d just call that love
I absolutely agree and yes there are more than one way to win. It’s only my opinion that his style works when you’re winning. How is coach McDaniel perceived when they aren’t winning?? Does this style still work? It’s yet to be seen early in his tenure there. I do know Sean has endured losing seasons and we had worked through it, 2007-2008 and 2014-2016. Aside from our Super Bowl year I think his best coaching jobs were 2006 and 2021.

How is any coach perceived when he isn’t winning?

“Oh, he’s not doing xyz right, he should consider trying abc instead”

Members of this message board have given Sean Payton the moon and the stars for his early work with the Saints. Hasty judgment serves nobody. Being first to a criticism comes with no prize.

Add 2013 in there because it would have been easy for him to flop after the year off but the team was inspired and on point from the start. Not a team I expected to win it all but played hard in 18 games.

What seems to have happened here is pretty dodgy bordering on illegal. Benching players because they won't renegotiate away part of their contract seems like an act of coercion. They are basically going to ruin his reputation and career if he doesn't do away with his contract.

I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up in court and with SP suspended assuming that he is responsible.

I'd be hiring DeVito's manager. He looks like he might 'know some people' to sort this out properly.

If it’s a financial move (not wanting to pay) and not a performance based move, wouldn’t that be on the GM? Payton may not have even been the one to make the call. He wasn’t the one who agreed to the terms in Russ’ contract.
Is doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things nor does it matter in the court of public opinion, SP is now the face/HC of the Broncos. He is the one that is going to take the heat for this. He has every right to tell the FO “No”. He knows this will help his team in the long run, so I’m sure he was on board 100%. The NFL is a business 1st.

Look, I'm not a SP fan but I keep finding myself in a position where I feel like I need to defend him. I don't see anything outrageous or controversial about benching Wilson. It's obviously in the best interest of the franchise. That is one of the worst contracts in the league and the Broncos are making sure they can get rid of it as soon as they can. They are admitting their mistake and taking steps to correct it. It's just smart business.

I don't see a racial issue here at all. It's like some people are wearing special race goggles where they are able to see racism everywhere. I don't get it. I guess I never will. The Broncos gave Wilson a ton of money to be their QB. It didn't work out the way everyone hoped so now they are moving on. It's pretty straight forward to me. You didn't have to be Sigmund Freud to see that SP's ego and Wilson's ego weren't going to mix well, especially if they weren't winning.

So Russ will move on and SP will start his search for his next QB which will inevitably end in disaster. I'm afraid Bronco Nation is in for a bit of a bumpy ride. SP decided he was burnt out when it was clear he would have to rebuild in New Orleans. Now he's facing another rebuild except now he's in the AFC. Good luck with that.

Clark is right. Payton is a thug. But he was our winning thug so we forgave him. How he handles himself post Saints will determine his HOF selection. Lots of media are already anti Sean so he will need to win them over thru either winning big again or softening his approach to people. I know he won’t do the latter, and I’m doubtful he can achieve the former.

Meh, I think Wilson is washed and Payton knows it. I don't see an issue w/ how it was handled because we've seen how Russ carries on when he's babied (seahawks). they took the training wheels off and handled him like a big boy. No need to hear rumors of how russ wants out of Seattle from a party w/ his famous GF. None of that BS.

Is it really any different than a player getting benched for poor play or benched because they know it’s over and they need to move on from his contract?
