Saints making strongest push for Anquan Boldin??? (3 Viewers)

This is my fear exactly. I am worried that this is the Saints trolling Rapaport yet again OR this is Boldin's agent making one last attempt to squeeze a little more money out of the team he really is going to sign with.

I hope I'm wrong, because I really think this could be a homerun pickup for us.

I would say the same thing, except that Ingram confirmed on his twitter that they've been talking.

Doesn't mean much, but it's better than just hearing it out of Ian "knows-nothing" Rapaport.

I remember a lot of fans saying this very same thing about Larry Fitzgerald prior to the 2015 season. "Up in age"... ok.

Anquan is 3 years older than Larry Fitzgerald. Yes, he's "up in age" for a football player. That's fact. Especially for a wide out.

Coleman > Boldin
Based on what? Boldin put up 800 yards with the 49ers last year, a team that couldn't pass the ball if their life depended on it. Coleman had > 500 with one o the greatest quarterbacks to ever play throwing to him on one of the best offenses in the league. Boldin catches everything, plain and simple. He may have lost a step, but if you put the ball near him he's going to catch it.

I've been saying it the entire offseason, and I still believe the Saints could use a good veteran presence at Wide Receiver. Boldin would fit that role perfectly.

Back in Feb, I was hoping the Saints had Anquan on their radar, glad he is still available. Cooks, Snead, Boldin, Thomas, Coleman that is a solid 5 with a good mix of youth and veteran leadership.

How does Boldin compare to Colston, though? We obviously thought Colston was not good enough to keep, is Boldin that much better? Esepcially since he doesn't "know" the system? Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of Boldin here. I'm just wondering why we wouldn't have just kept Colston if all we were looking for was a veteran possession receiver.

Boldin aged so much better than Colston. Stats:

Over the past three seasons in San Fran Boldin had 237 rec, 3,030 yards, and 16 TDs.

During that same span Colston had 179 rec, 2,365 yards, and 14 TDs.

Colston gave all he had. He will be missed, but his production should be easy to replace. I think Boldin will at least provide what Colston has the past few years.

There were stories that Colston failed a physical, and that led to his release. Whether the failed physical was THE reason, or just a last straw...who knows.

And, coming from someone who loved Colston since game 1 of 2006.......I can tell you that it was getting incredibly frustrating watching Colston drop passes, or worrying about whether someone was gonna come from behind and strip him of the ball.

I would love this signing for a few reasons:

  • If signed he would come at a very reasonable price.

  • He is a proven veteran leader which is great for a locker room.

  • We also have a very young WR group. We need someone to balance that out some what. Chemistry is a very important aspect of a team/unit. Our young WRs could greatly benefit from being around someone that has, and continues to be, successful on and off the field.

  • Although he is older, his body has not shown the wear that many other WRs show at his age.

  • He has really reliable hands and route running.

  • The biggest aspect that I would love to see Boldin bring to the team is his ability to separate. We have been terrible at creating separation at WR. Many mistake speed with separation, but speed is only one component to a player getting open. Guys like Boldin consistently get open.

People always seem to want to lump WRs into two categories; Speed Guys and Possession Guys. I think speed or possession is predicated on the ability to get separation and thus be open. Recent years, but last year particularly, we were horrible at getting separation.

A guy like Boldin really would round out our WR corps. He hits on so many boxes for us. Veteran player, great locker room presence, healthy and productive career, leader and humanitarian, and most importantly he is a reliable WR that knows how to get separation.

Good enough question. Besides the obvious price-related reasons all free agent considerations are subject to, it seems it was pretty much understood it was the end of the line for Colston, who has life after football seemingly figured out. He's done, he WANTS to be done, and it's time for his next chapter.

Boldin would've retired had he not wanted to play anymore. Apparently, there's still some fire there. And he'll have a far better QB throwing him the ball here than he had in S.F. last season :hihi:

Boldin may be one of those WRs like Jerry Rice that can play at a high level into his late 30s just because his game never really relied on speed. He is a skilled route runner and a power WR. He plays big also. I could see Boldin playing for two years here with a QB like Brees.

I feel that way as well. Colston could catch a b b pellets at night with his eyes closed in his prime. He also took a lot of punishment with his long frame.

Don't think Boldin's game has fallen off much, if at all. Just an older, wiser PRO that I hope we eventually sign. Our young crew could learn a lot from him.
