He’s unlikely to start right away.

By Chris Dunnells

The New Orleans Saints made lots of noise in the 2018 NFL Draft, but other than Marcus Davenport, none was more controversial than selecting OL Rick Leonard in the 4th Round.

Rob Hodges of SB Nation’s page for Florida State University, Tomahawk Nation, took some quick time to answer a few questions for Saints to get to know one of their newest additions to the offensive line.

The Saints got a lot of flack for drafting Leonard in the 4th Round, with many pundits putting an “Undrafted” grade on him. Were you surprised to see him go off the board that early?

“Stunned” is a pretty good word here. Leonard doesn’t lack any of the tools to make for a top-flight OL, having played DE (and seen playing time) early in his career at FSU. But Rick Trickett was able to convince him to switch to OT. At 6’7 311, he has good size and excellent frame to hold perhaps 10 or so more pounds of lean mass while retaining his athleticism. But yes, as is - I was stunned to see him go in the 4th round.

Where do Saints players rank in final 2025 Pro Bowl voting counts?

The New Orleans Saints have sent a lot of players to the Pro Bowl in the past, especially since the tail end of Drew Brees’ career with the famous 2017 draft class receiving so many awards. That may not be the case this year, though, as they aren’t filling up the ballots as much as they used to. Understandable, as they are sitting at 5-11. They do have five players, though, listed among the top-10 at their positions. Also unsurprisingly, they have just as many former players on the list.

This past week was the last chance

Saints' 2025 opponents are all but set

The 2024 NFL regular season is coming to a close, and for another year the New Orleans Saints will be watching the playoffs from home just like many of their fans. But this offseason is going to be different. The Saints must hire a new head coach after team owner Gayle Benson overruled general manager Mickey Loomis and fired Dennis Allen at midseason. Interim head coach Darren Rizzi hasn’t done enough to win the job. They’ll be busy on Airline Drive.

So we’re taking a quick look at 2025. Leaguewide standings are nearly set, though not in the NFC South, which means all but three of the Saints’ opponents next year are already confirmed. And we know the options in play for those last few slots.

Depending on Week 18’s results, the Saints could move down from third in the NFC South standings to fourth if they lose to the Buccaneers while the Carolina Panthers upset the Atlanta Falcons. That would be the difference in hosting the 7-9 Dallas Cowboys next year or the 3-13 New York Giants, as well as visiting the 11-5 Green Bay Packers or 4-12 Chicago Bears; we’re not as worried about getting the 4-12 Jacksonville Jaguars or 3-13 Tennessee Titans, but maybe we should be. This Saints team hasn’t taken advantage of multiple slates ranked among the easiest schedules in recent years.

So with that in mind, here’s what we know, and what we know we don’t know, about the Saints’ 2025 schedule:

Saints' embarrassing loss to Raiders didn't improve 2025 draft stock

One of the only positives to a losing season is that the NFL draft becomes more fun, thanks to securing a good pick. That is not the case for the New Orleans Saints this season as they keep losing, this time an embarrassing home defeat to the Las Vegas Raiders, and their draft positioning has not improved.

According to the experts at Tankathon, the New Orleans Saints would currently be given the No. 10 overall pick, which is the same exact spot they were in before their back-to-back awful losses.

There are simply too many bad teams this year. Especially with the 17th game being added...

Important things left to watch for in Saints' final game vs. Buccaneers

The New Orleans Saints are coming off of yet another embarrassing loss and have just one more game remaining, against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While there isn’t a lot to look forward to, a couple of key things for next year can still be gleamed from the matchup.

One important thing to watch this week will be how they use Spencer Rattler. The rookie quarterback has lost his first five starts in the NFL. While it hasn’t necessarily been the fairest chance to win, given the current outlook of the roster, his performance has still looked rocky. He has one more chance to go into the...

Saints already connected to another Chiefs LB in 2025 free agency

The New Orleans Saints sit at 5-11 and don’t have a great draft pick to show for it. Their best chance for improvement next year will be by making some moves in free agency.

Bleacher Report recently released a 2025 overview, which included a potential free agent for the Saints to consider this offseason. That player was linebacker Nick Bolton, of the Kansas City Chiefs. Here is what they had to say about Willie Gay Jr.’s former teammate:

Bolton would certainly be an interesting player to watch in the New Orleans defense, especially if Demario Davis is on his way out. But you have to...

Even if everything falls the Saints way in Week 18, they will pick no higher than No. 8 overall in the 2025 NFL draft. A win won't hurt their current position, though.

Drew Brees recognized for one of the best seasons by an 'old guy'

Bleacher Report’s David Kenyon took a look at the best seasons in sports by an “old guy” since 2015. Kenyon defined an old guy as a player who is at least 38 years old, and Drew Brees represents the New Orleans Saints on the list.

The ageless wonder played four seasons over the age of 38 from 2017-2020, and led the league in completion percentage in three of those seasons. The 2018 season was the most special of the quartet, and it’s was an easy choice for Kenyon.

Both Brees and the Saints had their best performances that season. The season ended with the infamous No-Call, but it’s the...

These NFL writers aren't out on Spencer Rattler just yet, despite 0-6 record

Spencer Rattler has yet to win a game as a starter, but not everyone is pessimistic about him. Bleacher Report’s NFL staff believes Rattler “has the tools to be a high-end backup quarterback.”

That’s a step down from auditioning to be the New Orleans Saints’ quarterback of the future, but Rattler becoming a high-end backup would likely give him a chance to start again somewhere, eventually.

Bleacher Report took in account Rattler was performing without Chris Olave and Alvin Kamara. He was also down Rashid Shaheed and Erik McCoy. Darren Rizzi acknowledged the lack of assistance for the...

Buccaneers rookie RB drawing comparisons to Saints superstar

Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie running back Bucky Irving has gotten off to a strong start to his career. In his first season in the NFL, Irving has joined exclusive company. He and New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara are the only running backs to reach 1,400 scrimmage yards on less than 250 touches as a rookie.

This is a great display of their explosiveness and dual-threat ability. Kamara’s rookie season was only 16 games, so this is a good point to compare stats and usage.

Irving has more overall touches and is used as a runner more frequently than Kamara was as a rookie. On the...

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero sat down with Peter Schrager on Good Morning Football to dish out what he’s hearing on the upcoming NFL head coach hiring cycle, and when Pelissero was asked to highlight a dark horse being considered by teams but not often discussed in the media, he suggested someone who has a couple of New Orleans Saints connections.

“Keep an eye on Jon Gruden,” Pelissero began. “We have not seen Gruden in a full-time basis in the NFL since back in 2021 when he resigned after offensive emails were leaked to the media that he had sent while working as an analyst at ESPN...

Former New Orleans Saints first-round draft pick Sheldon Rankins was trying to make a playoff push with his new team, but will now be lost for the remainder of the year due to a weekslong illness.

Rankins, currently with the Cincinnati Bengals, had been out of practice since Nov. 15 with the illness that will now have him end the year on the Non-Football Illness list, per an announcement from the team.

This could not have come at a worse time for the Bengals as they have a legitimate shot at coming back to make the playoffs. It will also likely spell the end of Rankins’ time in...

Former AFC coach is now available to interview for Saints HC job

The New Orleans Saints are in need of a head coach. New Orleans replaced Dennis Allen with Darren Rizzi, but it’s clear the team must search outside the building for their next head coach.

One of the candidates the Saints have been linked to is Mike Vrabel, and they now have the green light to interview him. After being the head coach of the Tennessee Titans (with whom he achieved a 54-45 record), Vrabel joined the Cleveland Browns as a consultant. His contract with the Browns was a one-year deal that expired on Monday. He can now interview with teams.

The New York Jets are another team...
