Drafting Kool-Aid McKinstry does NOT mean that the Saints will trade Marshon Lattimore. Here's a closer look at the talented Alabama corner and the logic behind the pick.

By Bob Rose - Saints News Network | SI

The New Orleans Saints pulled a bit of a surprise in the second round of the NFL Draft on Friday. They traded up from the 45th overall slot to the 41st, the ninth pick in the second round, while giving up a fifth and sixth round selection. That wasn't the surprising part.

With that 41st overall choice, the Saints selected Alabama CB Kool-Aid McKinstry. The pick took some by surprise. New Orleans had more pressing needs and already has an outstanding trio of corners in Marshon Lattimore, Paulson Adebo, and Alontae Taylor. However, a closer look reveals some strong logic behind the selection.

Here's an analysis of McKinstry and why the Saints made a wise decision in the second round.

Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB - Alabama

A three-year starter at Alabama, McKinstry was arguably the best cover man in the SEC. He brings good size (6'0" & 199-Lbs.) along with a clear football IQ and added versatility as a punt returner. ...

The New Orleans Saints made some popular picks in the 2024 draft. ESPN ranked three of them among this year’s 100 best selections, starting with first-round right tackle Taliese Fuaga. Here’s why ESPN’s Matt Miller argues Fuaga was the 24th-best pick out of the 257 selections in this year’s draft:

But they didn’t stop there. The Saints also nailed their second-round choice, which was a trade up four spots to select cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry. Miller ranked that pick at 77th in his top 100, writing:

However, that McKinstry pick wasn’t even the team’s second-best move on draft day...

Look ahead a few months and we can guess what New Orleans Saints fans will be asking: why hasn’t Kool-Aid McKinstry signed his contract? Recent collective bargaining agreements between the NFL and the players union has streamlined negotiations on rookie contracts, so there aren’t many points of conflict remaining. Most of the Saints draft class now signs their deals after rookie minicamp in May. But there’s one area that has turned into a battlefield: contracts for second round picks.

First-round pick contracts are fully guaranteed for the first four years, and we’re seeing players picked...

At the NFL Combine, Bradford measured at 5’10...

The New Orleans Saints have signed Vanderbilt punter Matthew Hayball as an undrafted free agent.

New Orleans released Blake Gilikin during training camp last season giving the job to Australian punter Lou Hedley the starting spot. Hedley had a rough 2023 season ranking 33rd in yards per punt leading to questions about security as the team's lone punter.

Although going undrafted, Hayball had some draft hype and projections. He averaged 47.6 yards per punt in 2023 and the majority of his punt yards are through the air rather than after. Hayball’s biggest critique is the lack of hang time...

Zay Jones may make sense as another Raiders reunion for Saints

The NFL draft is always tough on older players. Teams come out of it flush with young talent, which often leads to redundancies — that are quickly dealt with in a wave of cuts around the league.

And that’s exactly what Zay Jones experienced with the Jacksonville Jaguars this week. Jacksonville drafted former LSU wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. in the first round of this year’s draft, and a few days later chose to make room in the receiving corps by letting Jones go. Now he’s a free agent, and the former Las Vegas Raiders wideout could make sense for the New Orleans Saints.

Sure, the...

It isn’t too often you’ll see a pair of first round draft picks compete against each other at the college level. So it’s really impressive when you see two players picked back-to-back line up against one another.

That’s exactly what happened when UCLA kicked off against Oregon State last season, pitting right tackle Taliese Fuaga (the New Orleans Saints’ future pick at No. 14) against outside linebacker Laiatu Latu (the Indianapolis Colts’ choice at No. 15).

And it was one impressive battle. JM Football’s Bobby Skinner highlighted the battle in the trenches between these two future...

Alontae Taylor has maintained an interesting social media presence during his career with the New Orleans Saints, and another chapter was added on Tuesday as he hinted at changing his jersey number for a second time.

After coming into the NFL and initially choosing the No. 27, he switched to No. 1 for 2023. Now, he is hinting at changing to his college number of 2. Jameis Winston held it when Taylor first joined the team, so it only recently became available.

The No. 2 jersey is currently being used by backup quarterback Kellen Mond. Mond could be cut, though, after the team drafted...
