New Orleans can absolutely make a run at a title in a season with a loaded roster

by Will Brinson

Even when they won their only Super Bowl with Drew Brees and Sean Payton, the Saints were a one-dimensional team. Gregg Williams ran an -- ahem -- aggressive defense, but it wasn't necessarily a good defense, just an opportunistic one.

Last year things magically changed in New Orleans, thanks in large part to a historically good draft class that featured Marshon Lattimore and Marcus Williams, first- and second-round picks respectively, step up in a big way and improve the defensive side of the ball. The Saints went from a defense that is perennially the worst in the NFL to a top-10 team by DVOA, a highly improbable jump up from 31st in a single season.

Ryan Rymcyzk and Alvin Kamara, offensive picks in those same rounds, helped too. The Saints became a running-focused team, but in a modern way, with Kamara fitting in perfectly as a modern air back who can also run between the tackles. He and Mark Ingram were an incredible complement to each other, and a four-game suspension for Ingram shouldn't derail that. Ramcyzk allows them to watch Zach Strief walk away without skipping a beat. The offensive line is loaded, just like every other position group on this team.

Marshon Lattimore can’t seem to escape hamstring injuries this season. The former New Orleans Saints cornerback missed the Saints’ second game of the season versus the Dallas Cowboys due to a hamstring injury.

That was only a one game absence. Lattimore missed his last game in a Saints uniform due to a hamstring injury before being traded to the Washington Commanders. The cornerback missed his first four games as a Commander.

Lattimore returned to action against his former team last week. In his second game as a Commander, however, the cornerback had to exit due to another hamstring...

NEW ORLEANS — Despite the Saints still one day away from its Week 16 matchup in Green Bay, New Orleans was officially eliminated from the 2024-25 NFL Playoffs following the Atlanta Falcons' 34-7 win over the New York Giants on Sunday.

A longshot to make the postseason after suffering a seven-game losing streak following a 2-0 start, the Saints needed a lot of help to avoid a fourth-straight postseason shutout.

That help did not come and New Orleans is once again left on the outside looking in at the NFC's Super Bowl hopefuls – a game that in February 2025 will be hosted in the Caesars...

Spencer Rattler is stepping into his fourth start as the New Orleans Saints quarterback. It’s his first start since Week 8, and as long as Derek Carr remains out, Rattler will be the Saints’ starting quarterback. That stretch begins against the Green Bay Packers.

In last week’s contest, Rattler relieved Jake Haener and put on an improved performance. One of the rookie’s most glaring problems in his first stint was his issues protecting the football. He threw two interceptions in his first three games and fumble three times, too. As the Saints close out the season, Rattler must ensure he...

The New Orleans Saints are going into Week 16 without their top two rushing options. Taysom Hill is out for the season, and Alvin Kamara will miss at least this week with a groin injury.

So, how will the Saints approach the run game against the Green Bay Packers? Darren Rizzi told reporters this week to expect a “committee approach.”

New addition Clyde Edwards-Helaire wasn’t mentioned, and he will probably need more than a few days to pick up the playbook. For now he’s on the practice squad.

The New Orleans Saints play in sunny Louisiana, and the Green Bay Packers play in frigid Wisconsin. The differences in climate make it difficult to simulate the weather the Saints are about to endure when they play the Packers on Monday night, so quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko has had to get creative.

Current forecasts have the weather at 25 degrees on Monday night at Lambeau Field, with a possibility for snow. Meanwhile, it is over 40 degrees in New Orleans. So what were the Saints to do?

A lot has been made of the improvements to the team cafeteria this summer (as part of...

Alontae Taylor and Kool-Aid McKinstry have shown some positive things at cornerback since the New Orleans Saints traded away Marshon Lattimore. There have been lapses in technique occasionally too, however. The one thing the Saints secondary has objectively struggled with is stopping big plays. That will be challenged against the Green Bay Packers.

New Orleans has allowed the third-most passing plays of over 40 yards this season. Because of that, they’ve also allowed the fifth most yards. On Monday Night Football, they have to line up across from the passing attack with the most gains of...

Slim doesn’t even describe the New Orleans Saints’ chances at making the playoffs. There is just one path, and it could be erased before the Saints even take the field in Week 16.

The Saints close out league action versus the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football, so they’ll know exactly what they’re stepping into on game day.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers travel to Arlington, Texas to take on the Dallas Cowboys. If they are victorious, the Saints are eliminated from playoff contention. That’s also true if the Atlanta Falcons beat the New York Giants.

New Orleans wouldn’t have much to...

The New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers have wrapped up their final practices on Saturday ahead of their Monday Night Football matchup. The Saints ruled out four players. Among those ruled out was running back Alvin Kamara who is facing the possibility of missing the rest of the season. New Orleans also ruled out rookie wide receiver Bub Means who may be heading back to the injured reserve after suffering a setback during recovery from his ankle injury. Veteran wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling is questionable with a chest injury and currently missing practice due to an illness...

NEW ORLEANS — The Green Bay Packers look to win for the ninth time in their past 11 games when they host the New Orleans Saints on Monday night. If they get some help Sunday night, the Packers may have already clinched a playoff berth by the time this game kicks off. They know they can wrap up a postseason spot regardless by winning Monday night. The Saints won't have quarterback Derek Carr or running back Alvin Kamara because of injuries.
