The former North Alabama cornerback waited patiently to hear from an NFL team after the draft ended Sunday. Just when it seemed as if nothing was going to happen for Carnell he received a call from the New Orleans Saints on Thursday, inviting him to their rookie minicamp next week.

“I had not heard from anybody, so it was a little discouraging until I got that call,” Carnell said. “It didn’t happen when I wanted, but it is all on God’s timing. My family really supported me and I kept praying. I just wanted a chance to get my foot in the door and now I’ve got it.”

Carnell started at cornerback for the Lions the past two seasons after transferring from Grossmont College. The San Diego native recorded 36 tackles, intercepted two passes and broke up 12 during his junior season. As a senior, Carnell recorded first-team All-Gulf South Conference honors after making 28 tackles, intercepting four passes and breaking up eight passes.

Kellen Moore's new job has his old teammates feeling their age

The NFL is a small world, and it’s not too uncommon for players and coaches to have known each other before teaming up — but it’s unusual for a former teammate to be the one on your headset. That’s an experience several players reflected on when the New Orleans Saints announced Kellen Moore was becoming their new head coach.

Cornerback Stephon Gilmore, the 2019 Defensive Player of the Year who was drafted the same year Moore turned pro, said seeing the former Boise State quarterback being a head coach made him feel old.

That sentiment hit closer to home for Darius Slay, another...

The New Orleans Saints have seen quite a bit of change in the past few weeks.

The last remnants of the Sean Payton era have left the building, and it feels as though the Saints are finally entering a new beginning.

So, it would be fitting that a new addition to the uniform may be on the way this fall.

The NFL altered the uniform rules in 2024 allowing all teams to have a 3rd helmet. We’ve seen quite a few varieties for teams with two helmets over the years, the most often used of those being a throwback uniform. The Saints have used those in the past, and most recently have adopted a...

Colin Cowherd says Kellen Moore won't last after picking 'a dead franchise'

Kellen Moore has a lot of work to do in getting the New Orleans Saints back to contention in the NFC, and some commentators think that task is going to prove too much for him. Just ask Colin Cowherd. During an appearance on his “The Herd” sports talk show, Cowherd made it clear he doesn’t have high expectations for Moore in New Orleans.

“Eh, he’ll be fine. They don’t have any cap room. They’ve got a lot of issues. I think that’s gonna be, for the next couple years, a dead franchise,” Cowherd shrugged.

When asked if Moore could have a winning record by Year 4, he rejected that notion: “Oh...

Skip Bayless argues Kellen Moore 'isn't remotely qualified' to be Saints head coach

The hot take artists are out in force, and Skip Bayless didn’t waste much time before tearing into the New Orleans Saints for their decision to hire Kellen Moore as the team’s next head coach. The septuagenarian sports talk show personality is unimpressed by this move, to say the least.

“Are you kidding me? Kellen Moore? Yeah, he can call plays. But he has zero charisma. Nice guy but zero personality,” Bayless said, suggesting Moore looked like more of an IT specialist than a football coach. “You don’t see many sideline shots of Kellen Moore calling plays because he’s so uninteresting...

How much would it cost the Saints to use the 2025 franchise tag?

The NFL’s franchise tag window opened this week and teams have some time to consider what to do about their most important free agents. For the New Orleans Saints, that list is pretty thin — just three players appear likely to get multi-year deals on the free agent market. Would the franchise tag be an option for retaining any of them? Probably not, given the team’s tight salary cap situation, but you never know. They were in similar circumstances a few years back and still found room to use the tag on safety Marcus Williams (only to lose him a year later).

But what about the transition tag? It’s a slightly cheaper alternative but doesn’t guarantee compensation for the Saints if another team signs the player to an extension; if they use the franchise tag on someone and don’t match an offer, they’ll get multiple first round draft picks back. So it’s riskier if you’re worried about losing the player.

Drew Brees on how Joe Burrow fits into the modern era of NFL QBs

Joe Burrow’s case for Most Valuable Player was one of the most controversial subjects toward the end of the 2024 season. That’s due to the fact that some saw his chances for winning the award as purely squandered simply because of the fact the Cincinnati Bengals weren’t in the playoffs. And it’s a situation that legendary New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is all too familiar with.

Burrow has put up astronomical numbers that were among the best in the NFL, and despite not having the best protection up front and a supporting cast that was not exactly up to par, he still managed to...

New Orleans Saints head coach Kellen Moore has been actively assembling his coaching staff since his hire.

Since then, the Saints have added Scott Tolzien, 37, as quarterbacks coach, Philadelphia Eagles run game coordinator T.J. Paganetti, 35, whose new role is currently unknown, Chase Haslett, 32, as their tight ends coach, and Brendan Nugent, 41, as offensive line coach. With former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley, 42, being the favorite at defensive coordinator, it is clear the Saints are looking to assemble a youthful coaching staff.

While New Orleans is adding youth...

The 2024 season is complete, and now teams are somewhat waiting around until free agency begins for 2025, and then the NFL Draft which follows shortly after. This gives us the opportunity to look back at the 2024 offseason for the New Orleans Saints and analyze the signings they made throughout the free agency period which led to their 2024 roster.

One of those signings was wide receiver Cedrick Wilson Jr., so let’s take a look at his new contract, 2024 season, and grade the move:

Wilson was the only multi-year contract the Saints handed out during the 2024 offseason, signing a two-year...

The 2025 NFL offseason is upon us, and free agency is not much further away as fans sit and wait through the “dead period” of the offseason. The New Orleans Saints have been busy however which is refreshing, with the hiring of new head coach Kellen Moore, and now working towards adding additional coaches to fill out his staff.

With this, we have plenty of time to look back at the 2024 offseason and figure out whether or not the Saints made the right decisions when it came to signings, and who they let walk. One of the players they moved on from was defensive back Lonnie Johnson Jr., who...

New Orleans Saints mock draft round-up: One position remains popular in 2025

The New Orleans Saints have plenty of needs to address heading into the 2025 NFL draft, but some holes certainly seem larger than others.

While it is certainly up in the air what the Saints and Mickey Loomis will do when it is their turn to pick in the first round, one position group is becoming a trendy selection in mock drafts. That would be at defensive end. It was an already weak group from a year ago that is set to thin out even more in free agency. If New Orleans could secure a game-changer in the first round at a cheap price, it would be hard for them to pass up on the opportunity.

While it wasn’t the only spot picked to be filled this past week, it was certainly a popular occurrence in the latest edition of the mock draft round-up:

Which Saints free agent could they use the franchise tag on in 2025?

As we inch closer to free agency, NFL teams can begin using the franchise tag on Feb. 18. Just don’t expect the New Orleans Saints to be one of those teams. New Orleans hasn’t used the franchise tag since tagging Marcus Williams in 2021, and the Saints have only used it six times since it was introduced in 1993.

The franchise tag is meant to be used to hold on to your top free agent for at least a year. It is often used to give both sides time to agree on a deal while maintaining the security of not having to compete with other teams in free agency.

The tag typically pays the player the...
