Without suspended Mark Ingram, how might Saints fill Pro Bowl RB's void?

The New Orleans Saints’ potent running game will be short on some firepower to start the season.

The NFL has suspended Mark Ingram for the first four games of the 2018 season for violating its policy on performance-enhancing drugs. He will be eligible to participate in all offseason activities, including preseason games, but will not be able to take the field during the season until Week 5 against the Washington Redskins.

The Pro Bowl running back became one of the focal points of the offense over the past two seasons and is coming off his best season in which he rushed for 1,124 yards and 12 touchdowns on 230 carries, averaging 4.9 yards per attempt. He also caught 58 passes for 416 yards.

Ingram paired with Alvin Kamara and helped turn the Saints offense into a balanced attack, one against which defenses sometimes attempted to stop the running game instead of focusing on the pass. That might not be as much of a problem at the beginning of this season with one of the key pieces missing.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a team leaning harder on their cornerbacks than the New Orleans Saints are this year. They’ve stacked strength on strength by drafting Kool-Aid McKinstry and mending fences with Marshon Lattimore, all while returning Paulson Adebo and Alontae Taylor from last season’s team. That’s a lot of talent to fit into one secondary but Dennis Allen’s defense is known for finding ways to get multiple defensive backs on the field at once.

But how do they compare to other teams around the league? Are the Saints unique in stockpiling so many corners? Here’s where they fell in the cornerback rankings from

It’s always exciting to see an undrafted rookie drawing attention in the spring, and Dallin Holker has earned it. The former Colorado State tight end signed with the New Orleans Saints after the 2024 draft and has already begun making plays at spring practices.

But what are reasonable expectations for him in his rookie year? We’ll seek to answer that while highlighting Holker as our Saints Player of the Day while counting down to kickoff with the Carolina Panthers in Week 1, which is 85 days away. So let’s get to know Holker a little better:

The Saints have experienced a lot of injuries...

Demario Davis, Pete Werner, and Willie Gay are a formidable trio, and the New Orleans Saints invested a lot to get better play out of their linebackers this offseason. In addition to signing Gay as competition for Werner, they brought in free agents like Khaleke Hudson plus rookies including Jaylan Ford (a fifth-round draft pick) and Isaiah Stalbird (whose contract ranked high in guarantees for undrafted players). That’s with backups returning from last year’s team such as D’Marco Jackson, Anfernee Orji, and Monty Rice. Nephi Sewell is the best of the bunch but he’s recovering from a late-season knee injury.

So where does ESPN rank the Saints’ linebacker corps among all 32 teams?

In this week’s poll, we asked readers which offseason storyline for the New Orleans Saints most interests you now that minicamp has started:

In a close race, the health of certain players such as tackle Ryan Ramczyk and defensive end Chase Young won with 37.4% of the vote. Ramczyk is arguably the best RT in the NFL when healthy, but has had major issues with his knee this offseason that might cause him to miss time during the regular season. Chase Young has struggled with injuries his entire career, and this offseason has been hit with a neck injury that has kept him out of the first days...

The New Orleans Saints gave Derek Carr a big bag in 2023, but how does his contract compare to others around the league? With more and more young passers inking long-term extensions, Carr’s number keeps falling down as the market evolves. Still, it’s tough to minimize Carr’s $150 million deal (which came with $100 million in total guarantees, $60 million of which were guaranteed at signing).

The New Orleans Saints announced Friday they had signed tight end Jesper Horsted, waiving undrafted rookie wide receiver Kyle Sheets to make room. Formerly of the Las Vegas Raiders and Chicago Bears, Horsted was brought in to reinforce the depth chart after an injury to starting tight end Juwan Johnson.

Horsted has mostly played special teams after turning pro out of Princeton, though he has caught 14 passes for 131 yards and three touchdowns in his four-year NFL career. He has also made ten tackles in the kicking game. He’s someone they know well. Horsted was teammates with Derek Carr on...

We’re heading off into the desert after the New Orleans Saints wrapped up their mandatory minicamp this week; there won’t be much activity in the weeks ahead until training camp begins on July 24. So what have we learned at organized team activities and minicamp? How has the work on the field influenced our roster projection?

Between injury updates (some news positive, some negative) and performance at practice, it’s a good time to revise our predictions to guess at who makes the cut for the 53-man roster in August. And it isn’t easy. The Saints have stacked up talent at some position groups while others are still looking thin, so maybe they’ll bring in some new faces over the summer. For now, here’s how we see it shaking out:

New Orleans Saints TE Juwan Johnson will undergo foot surgery next week and will be out a while, per a report by Adam Schefter with ESPN. The hope is that Johnson will be available for the start of the regular season when the Saints will face the Carolina Panthers on September 8th in New Orleans.

Saints head coach Dennis Allen was asked about Johnson injury after minicamp practice on Thursday. Allen said, “It’s really hard to say because it wasn’t any sort of event. It’s his foot. His foot was bothering him and so, he’s unable to practice right now. But it really wasn’t an event, so I’m...
