There’s been a lot of consternation about the New Orleans Saints’ search for a new head coach — not helped by media analysts who rank the team’s opening among the worst in the NFL this offseason. Just why is it taking so long to find a full-time replacement for Dennis Allen? Is it because nobody wants the job?

Patience is a virtue. We’ve already seen the Saints interview half of the candidates they’ve requested meetings with, having spoken with Anthony Weaver, Mike Kafka, and Aaron Glenn in NFL-mandated virtual interviews. Those same NFL rules are slowing down the search.

The New Orleans Saints don’t have an inspiring option at quarterback for next season, and they could look to make a move for a different, cheaper option under center than Derek Carr. If nothing else Spencer Rattler could use more competition to back him up than we saw from Jake Haener this season.

Anthony Palacios of LastWordOnSports recently listed the Saints as a top landing spot for Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields this offseason, putting them within the top five destinations.

The New Orleans Saints have a long offseason ahead of them with plenty of questions to be answered.

They are not only looking for a new head coach, but any sort of direction for the future. That likely means a rebuild is on the way and now could be the time to move on from a couple of veterans.

Pro Football Focus’ Bradley Locker recently put together a list of 15 trade candidates for this offseason and three Saints players made the cut. Locker listed quarterback Derek Carr, offensive tackle Trevor Penning and safety Tyrann Mathieu.

The New Orleans Saints aren’t seen as the most desirable vacancy this year (depending on where you look, they could have the worst head coach opening in the NFL), but Sports Illustrated’s Connor Orr laid out what could attract coaches to join the black and gold:

Orr doesn’t mention young talent like Chris Olave, Taliese Fuaga, Rashid Shaheed, Bryan Bresee or Erik McCoy in his pros. That either means he generally doesn’t view the Saints’ young players as a plus, or it just ranks low on the list.

Sports Illustrated’s Connor Orr shared his pros and cons for every NFL head coach vacancy, including the New Orleans Saints. While the pros were feel-good things, such as the fan base and job security, the negative was built on more concrete points.

Orr wrapped up his article by calling New Orleans, “the most difficult avenue to (win) right away.” Quarterback and monetary issues have molded this opinion for Orr.

The New Orleans Saints offseason has arrived early with them failing to make the postseason yet again. They finished with a 5-12 record and have little direction for the immediate future of the franchise.

This offseason, they will be dealing with the potential culmination of their cap space woes and won’t be able to compete to add much talent to the roster in free agency because of that. That could limit them in the search for a new head coach, with them looking like a bottom open job in the NFL.

Already, the Saints are in last place for 2025 cap space at more than $50 million. Only four teams overall are in the red, emphasizing how much an issue money is right now for New Orleans.

There are six vacancies in the 2025 NFL offseason’s coaching carousel, and Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport argues the New Orleans Saints are the worst head coach opening of the bunch.

When looking at the Saints’ roster, Davenport sees “a veteran-laden roster, with defensive stalwarts like edge-rusher Cameron Jordan and linebacker Demario Davis nearing the end of the line.”

Derek Carr leads the charge at quarterback, and has a less than favorable contract. Spencer Rattler still has developmental potential, but the quarterback position doesn’t inspire ultimate confidence.

Recently, I was reading an article from CBS Sports where the writer made an interesting observation on the New Orleans Saints’ position in the 2025 NFL draft. Will Brinson wrote that, “the Saints won enough games this year where they don’t really have a great draft pick (No. 9 overall.)”

While that is an accurate description of the situation the Saints find themselves in, the phrasing caught my attention. Saying the Saints won enough games to hurt their draft position didn’t feel right when New Orleans only won five times.

The 2025 NFL playoffs begin on Saturday afternoon and the New Orleans Saints will not be competing. But a surprising number their former players will be, however.

When thinking former Saints in the playoffs, all fans immediately think of the Denver Broncos. Sean Payton ended their drought with Bo Nix having a breakout rookie campaign. There are eight previously New Orleans players, unsurprisingly the largest number in the league. The Broncos start their postseason run on Sunday morning against the Buffalo Bills.

The Saints also traded away Marshon Lattimore to the Washington Commanders earlier this season and that trade could be crucial as he is set to return from injury. New Orleans fans can watch Lattimore take the field on Sunday night in a high-stakes reunion with Mike Evans and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

New Orleans will make numerous personnel moves over the next few months, but it's unlikely it'll make any major moves until it finds a permanent head coach.

The #5 Texas Longhorns (13-2) face the #8 Ohio State Buckeyes (12-2) in the CFP semifinals. The winner moves on to the 2025 CFP National Championship Game in Atlanta on January 20th. These two universities have been perennial powers in college football and should have a fantastic game in this one!
