By Ken Belson

Jerry Richardson, the founding owner of the Carolina Panthers, has agreed to sell the team to David A. Tepper, a billionaire hedge fund owner, for a record-setting amount of at least $2.2 billion.

The sale price was confirmed by two people with knowledge of the deal.

The sale, which must be approved by at least three-quarters of the N.F.L.’s owners, comes five months after Richardson said that he would sell the team. The announcement came shortly after an article in Sports Illustrated linked him to allegations of sexual harassment. The N.F.L. continues to investigate those allegations.

The owners could vote on Tepper’s application as early as next week, when they meet in Atlanta.
Advised by Steve Greenberg of Allen & Co., Richardson initially sought at least $3 billion for his team, but trimmed his expectations when no potential buyers emerged at that price. At least one potential buyer, Michael Rubin, the founder of the online sports merchandise retailer Fanatics, dropped out of the process when he was told he would have to pay substantially more than $2.5 billion for the team, according to two people with knowledge of the process.

NEW ORLEANS — Darren Rizzi says it is his goal to become an NFL head coach. He's now got eight games to show what he can do as the Saints interim coach. Injuries and a roster that had no depth, play a role in Dennis Allen getting fired and Rizzi has to battle through the same issues.

His team could get a little healthier for the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Rizzi was named interim head coach on Monday after the Saints fired Allen following the team's seven-game losing streak.

The Saints started practicing under Rizzi on Wednesday.

Safety Will Harris was a full participant in practice on...

Saints' most important offensive starter returns after early-season injury

This could be big. The New Orleans Saints haven’t won a game since Pro Bowl center Erik McCoy got hurt back in Week 3, which put him on injured reserve after undergoing groin muscle surgery. But their most important offensive starter returned to practice on Thursday, at least on a limited basis.

It’s still probably too soon for McCoy to get back into a game; his initial timeline had him returning to the lineup after the bye week. There’s a chance he could return sooner, and opening his 21-day practice window may indicate he’ll be back sooner rather than later.

Saints share some good news on Week 10 injury report update

There were two big changes to the New Orleans Saints injury report ahead of Week 10’s game with the Atlanta Falcons. Two starters on injured reserve returned to practice, one of them receiving an upgrade to full reps — safety Will Harris (hamstring). Another, center Erik McCoy (groin), practiced on a limited basis. McCoy’s return is likely a week away or more but that’s a big step in the right direction.

Other than that, it’s more of the same. Wide receivers Chris Olave (concussion) and Cedrick Wilson Jr. (shoulder) still didn’t participate. Neither did cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry...

State of the NFC South

For the NFC South, Week 9 seemed like a potential season-defining week. The Saints needed a big win against the Panthers to turn around the season, the Buccaneers needed to catch up with the Falcons, and the Falcons could further solidify their top spot in the NFC South.

Regular Season record 2-7

The Panthers’ season has been disappointing, and before Week 9, their play landed Carolina the title of worst team in the NFL. I say before Week 9 because the Panthers upset the New Orleans Saints in a 23-22 battle for last place. No one, including myself, believed Carolina could win this game...

No one is more frustrated than Kendre Miller with his injury situation — after all, it’s his own body getting damaged and holding back his career. But former New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen’s frustrations boiled over. Not long after Miller returned from injured reserve with a hamstring injury, he exited another game after injuring the hamstring in his other leg.

It was described as a minor injury, expected to sideline him for a week or two. But this report from LouisianaSports.Net’s Ross Jackson says Allen “had a lot to do with” the decision to sideline Miller on injured...
