Fan favorite Michael Mauti's release came as something of a surprise last week, particularly since it happened only a month after the veteran linebacker re-signed a contract with his hometown in free agency.

Mauti has been a key part of the special-teams units in New Orleans and an emergency linebacker on defense for three seasons, but the veteran got caught in a numbers game.

New Orleans felt like it had enough players at linebacker; the Saints also cut Adam Bighill last week. ...

Saints linebacker Willie Gay Jr. shares update after hand injury

New Orleans Saints linebacker Willie Gay Jr. exited Sunday’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons with what was announced as a hand injury. On Monday, Gay shared a photo on Instagram after apparently undergoing surgery, via Saints News Network’s John Hendrix, but we shouldn’t speculate too much. It could be a hand issue or maybe a wrist. Either way Gay was wearing a sling over his left arm.

It’s another tough blow to a Saints defense already dealing with multiple injuries. Demario Davis missed that Falcons game with a hamstring issue. Tyrann Mathieu left partway through with a groin problem, and...

Kendre Miller is the Saints' last hope of giving Alvin Kamara help

Alvin Kamara has been phenomenal this season. The New Orleans Saints running back is on pace to have the best season of his career, but his recent injuries suggest he would benefit from receiving some help with the workload.

Ideally, Jamaal Williams would give Kamara reprieve. His lack of touches suggest a lack of belief from the staff. Taysom Hill is the Saints’ second-best running threat, but he has his own injuries.

This is where Kendre Miller comes into play. There’s no guarantee he’ll be available when the Saints face the Kansas City Chiefs on “Monday Night Football” next week...

Dennis Allen says the Saints offense needs more firepower

The New Orleans Saints have a good set of options at the skills positions, but good is the enemy of great. And Saints head coach Dennis Allen is looking for someone to step up now that injuries have hit the top of the depth chart.

Chris Olave played through a hamstring injury against the Atlanta Falcons. Taysom Hill scored both of the team’s first two touchdowns before exiting with a ribs issue. That meant an even heavier workload than normal for Alvin Kamara, and a wider range of responsibilities for Rashid Shaheed. And Allen needs to see other guys pulling their weight.

“We got to find...

How can the New Orleans Saints get better in the 2025 NFL draft? After a 2-2 start with Sunday’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons, they’re slotted in at No. 13, per Tankathon, and they clearly have some problems. It’ll take more than one draft pick to cure what ails them.

So is a running back the answer? No, not for everything. But Boise State prospect and Heisman Trophy candidate Ashton Jeanty was too good to pass up when we got on the clock with the Pro Football Focus 2025 NFL mock draft simulator.

Nerds will tell you not to draft a running back in the first round, but NFL teams are showing...

The Saints are talented, but they aren't a good team yet

We were riding high after the first two weeks, but last-minute losses to the Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons have proven one thing: The New Orleans Saints are not a good team. Until proven otherwise, they are a talented but average team.

Chris Olave is a good player whose route-running allows him to create separation with regularity. Alvin Kamara has gained over 100 yards from scrimmage every week this season. Rashid Shaheed is an elite deep threat.

Defensively, Demario Davis is still one of the best linebackers in the league. Tyrann Mathieu’s nose for the ball hasn’t faded...

Trevor Penning fined $11,255 for unnecessary roughness vs. Eagles

It wasn’t enough for Trevor Penning to cost his team 15 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles. The NFL came calling with an $11,255 fine for unnecessary roughness after he drove Eagles cornerback Darius Slay out of bounds and into the New Orleans Saints’ bench.

This was the kind of play Penning was criticized for coming out of college, and he had done a good job avoiding them after turning pro. But this was an instance where he fell back into bad habits. It was a dumb play that injured Slay, and bowled over one of Penning’s coaches who couldn’t get out of the way in time on the sideline...

Tyrann Mathieu banged up vs. Falcons, now dealing with groin and heel injuries

Tyrann Mathieu exited Sunday’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons with a groin injury, per ESPN’s Katherine Terrell, adding to his list of ailments. The New Orleans Saints safety has already been limited in games with a heel issue, and he also dealt with a calf injury earlier this season.

But this groin injury could be the most serious of the bunch. Starting center Erik McCoy is out six to eight weeks after undergoing core muscle surgery for a similar injury. Hopefully it isn’t as dire aa situation. It’s a good sign that Mathieu observed the rest of the Falcons game from the bench with his...
