Saints linebacker Craig Robertson is one of those players who keeps finding his way onto the field. Undrafted in 2011 out of North Texas, he spent his first NFL season on Cleveland’s practice squad before getting a chance to become a situational backup and special teamer in 2012. He started three games for the Browns in 2012 and then 61 of his next 73 games, including 27 of 31 since signing with the Saints in 2016. Initially a safety in college, Robertson is a finesse linebacker with speed, though he’d never be confused for Deion Jones or Telvin Smith.

Guys like Robertson must play faster than their athleticism. That demands an aptitude for diagnosing plays. We think of this as reading and reacting, but for a linebacker, much of the game takes place before the snap, at the line of scrimmage. Watching his 2017 game against the Rams, Robertson showed me how he sniffs out plays before the snap.

However, one more player has been added to that list recently, as a fan favorite and Louisiana native running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire has also been signed to a reserve/future deal as well.

Edwards-Helaire joined the Saints late in the 2024 season as they were dealing with various running back injuries, and was viewed as a good depth option to come in and get some of the excess playing time, trying to wrap up the season. However he...

Kellen Moore shared a lot of information in his introductory press conference as head coach of the New Orleans Saints. Some of what he said wasn’t as interesting as what he withheld, like his vision for the defensive scheme and the future of players like Derek Carr. But he did offer up one nugget that comes as a bit of a surprise.

“Yeah, so my first NFL experience was a 30 visit to the New Orleans Saints,” Moore grinned, “2012, I was coming in as a player, so it’s kind of funny coming full-circle, thirteen, fourteen years later, whatever it is.”

It’s been a while since Moore was turning...

With the head coaching hire complete, the New Orleans Saints should now look to hire their next defensive and offensive coordinators. Doug Nussmeier, the current quarterbacks coach in Philadelphia, appears to be the front-runner for the OC position.

A former quarterback himself, Nussmeier was drafted by the Saints in the fourth round of the 1994 NFL draft. After four seasons in New Orleans, he spent the next few years bouncing around the league before joining the CFL’s BC Lions in 2000 and winning the Grey Cup. Similar to how Moore got into coaching, the Lions would ask him to be their QB...

Good on Kellen Moore for not tipping his hand. The New Orleans Saints head coach was introduced in his first press conference on Thursday, and one of the questions he was pressed on centered around the team’s starting quarterback. Is Derek Carr going to remain under center now that Moore is going to be calling plays through the headset?

Moore was asked twice about whether he could commit to Carr as the team’s Week 1 starter, but he didn’t take the bait either time. He repeatedly described Carr as a “tremendous quarterback” who deserves to start in the NFL.

“I have so much respect for him...
