After the New Orleans Saints gave up their 2019 first-round pick to move up to pick Marcus Davenport in the 2018 NFL Draft, expectations for the defensive end will be sky high this season.

Fans seem to be expecting 10 sacks right out of the gate for the Texas-San Antonio product, but is that realistic for a rookie that went 14th overall?

Based on an analysis of the pass rushers selected in the past seven drafts, it would seem double-digit sacks is an unrealistic -- but not impossible -- goal for his rookie season.

NEW ORLEANS — Todd Grantham is leaving the staff of the NFL's Saints to become the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State, New Orleans interim coach Darren Rizzi said Monday.

Grantham has been defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns in the NFL and for Georgia, Louisville, Mississippi State and Florida at the college level.

“He made the decision he wanted to get back into the college game," Rizzi said. “He’s obviously been a coordinator before at a couple of really good college programs. (Oklahoma State coach) Mike Gundy’s getting a great coach, and congratulations to Todd.”

NEW ORLEANS — Saints quarterback Derek Carr was willing to risk his health to improve New Orleans’ chances of playing meaningful football in mid-December.

Now the Saints, who’ve remained mathematically alive in the playoff race by winning three of four, might have to play without Carr again – and it didn’t go well the last time.

Saints interim coach Darren Rizzi declined on Monday to rule out Carr for any of New Orleans' final four games because of his injured non-throwing hand or his concussion. Both injuries occurred when he tried to leap for a first down and crashed hard to the turf...

The New Orleans Saints defeated the New York Giants on Sunday, 14-11. The win came at a price as quarterback Derek Carr was injured late in the game while trying to convert a first down. Carr suffered a concussion and a significant fracture to his non-throwing hand.

As of Monday, the Saints did not plan on putting their veteran quarterback on IR. The combination of being in concussion protocol and the hand injury could knock Carr out for several weeks, though.

Behind Carr on the depth chart are rookie Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener. Interim coach Darren Rizzi was not going to name a...

We’ve learned some more details on Derek Carr’s new injury. The New Orleans Saints starting quarterback fractured a bone in his non-throwing hand leaping for a first down late in Sunday’s win against the New York Giants, and while it won’t land him on injured reserve, he’s going to be a week-to-week decision, according to interim head coach Darren Rizzi.

But there are longer concerns at play here. If Carr can’t pass a physical by March 17, an additional $30 million becomes guaranteed on his contract.

That’s already the case anyway, as far as Carr’s performance and the salary cap are...

Darren Rizzi says Derek Carr won't go on injured reserve

Early indications on Derek Carr’s new hand injury had the New Orleans Saints quarterback likely going on injured reserve, effectively ending his season. But according to interim head coach Darren Rizzi, that isn’t the direction the team is leaning, at least not right now.

“I’ve already seen some reports out there, a little bit false,” Rizzi told reporters Monday afternoon. “Right now like I said yesterday, Derek’s dealing with a non-throwing hand injury. As it stands at this moment I don’t believe it’s going to be an I.R. situation, I think it’s going to be a week to week situation. We’re...

The New Orleans Saints have a big decision to make. Starting quarterback Derek Carr went down with a broken hand in Sunday’s win over the New York Giants, and if he can’t play next week against the Washington Commanders, one of his backups will step in.

The question is whether it would be Spencer Rattler or Jake Haener. Interim head coach Darren Rizzi told reporters Monday afternoon it’ll be decision he makes with input from the offensive coaching staff, but that Rattler won’t be starting just because that’s who got the nod last time.

“I think this is new ground, if you will, so we’re...

There’s no love lost between Jay Gruden and the New York Giants — he coached against them with Washington from 2014 to 2019, going 4-7. The second-to-last game he coached was a 24-3 loss to Big Blue. But the former NFL head coach put the Giants’ close loss to the New Orleans Saints under a microscope when studying this week’s games, and he says the Saints may have gotten away with a penalty on their game-winning blocked field goal.

Gruden highlighted two Saints defensive linemen on the field goal try, Payton Turner and Nathan Shepherd, who pulled and pushed down the left guard and center...
