METAIRIE, La. -- "It's got to be a quarterback. It must be Lamar Jackson."

That was the prevailing reaction when the New Orleans Saints made one of the biggest, boldest moves in this year's draft -- trading away next year's first-round pick and a fifth-rounder in 2018 to move up from No. 27 to No. 14.

And it was a fair reaction, considering that, well, no team in NFL history has ever made a move quite like it for a non-quarterback.

Instead, the Saints threw a curve ball, selecting defensive end Marcus Davenport from the University of Texas-San Antonio.

How rare was the move?

All signs point to the New Orleans Saints hiring Kellen Moore as head coach once the Philadelphia Eagles are finished in Super Bowl LIX, but who would be calling his defense? Moore has said he’d continue calling plays on offense, if he’s hired as a head coach somewhere (like New Orleans), so it’s critical that he get the defensive coordinator hire right. Whether it’s an experienced assistant, a former head coach, or someone younger with a fresh perspective, finding the right fit on the other side of the ball may determine if Moore lasts. Assuming the Saints do hire him, afte rall.

With that in mind, we’ve ranked five candidates for the job from most- to least-likely:

Options emerge as DC for Kellen Moore if he becomes Saints head coach

The New Orleans Saints have cleared house on their coaching staff, as they now have vacancies at most of the major positions. One of the ones that most recently opened up was at defensive coordinator, as Joe Woods has left for the Las Vegas Raiders to join Pete Carroll’s staff.

The likely scenario here is that the Saints have chosen to let many of their coaches seek out other positions, laterally or otherwise, to allow whoever their new head coach may be to select their own staff altogether. Given Kellen Moore is the frontrunner for the position as of now, he has received much speculation...

Comparing the Chiefs and Eagles by defensive positions

The Chiefs and Eagles are set to face off in less than a week. Looking at the rosters is a good way to attempt to predict a winner, and after already comparing the Chiefs and Eagles offenses, the defense is now the focus.

The Kansas City Chiefs traded their top cornerback in the off season, and many, including myself, believed it would be a massive hit to their defense. Trent McDuffie stepped up this season as the top CB on the roster, but the Chiefs pass defense still struggled throughout the year. Regarding the safeties, Justin Reid has been a great addition since signing with Kansas...

As the attention on Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore is in full focus this week in New Orleans before Super Bowl LIX, many local media members have been able to get a gauge for what he thinks of the Saints organization and more specifically, his thoughts on quarterback Derek Carr.

Moore, as a former Boise State standout, was asked about his matchup with Carr back in college, (a 57-7 blowout win for his Broncos) but quickly shifted to give praise to Carr and his body of work in the league.

“I’ve known Derek for a long time, tons of respect for him as a quarterback in...

Demario Davis has made his retirement plans, but he isn't leaving just yet

How much longer will Demario Davis play for the New Orleans Saints? He gave a definitive answer to Matt Moscona for After Further Review: “My goal is to do three more years and then I’m out of here.”

Davis is in an interesting place in both his career and his positioning with the team. The Saints are more than likely going into a youth movement. Davis remains one of the best players on the Saints’ defense. If there were a veteran to predict would be safe, it’s him. There’s still the unpredictability factor of a new coach wanting to clean house.

For the first time in five years, Davis...

If the New Orleans Saints hire Kellen Moore as the next head coach, they’ll get a positive review from Rashid Shaheed. When asked about Moore, Shaheed called him a “genius,” per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill.

Shaheed is working his way back from injury, but he along with Chris Olave are two of the most attractive pieces for an offensive minded head coach. They’re two young, dynamic receivers.

New Orleans is getting a complete overhaul this year. Klint Kubiak joined the Seattle Seahawks, so there will be a change of system even if Moore isn’t the coach. Shaheed has studied the...

With Kellen Moore likely becoming the next head coach of the New Orleans Saints, many have wondered what a Moore-led staff would look like.

During yesterday’s media availability, Moore was asked about his younger brother Kirby who just finished his second season as the offensive coordinator for the Missouri Tigers. Kellen Moore had some high praise for his brother’s accomplishments while noting the potential for more opportunities in the near future.

If hired by New Orleans, Moore will be expected to put his coaching staff together immediately. Already behind schedule with hires being...

2024 Saints free agent report cards: Was letting Malcolm Roach go a big loss?

The NFL offseason is nearly upon us, as the only thing standing in the way between teams and beginning their roster management is the Super Bowl, held in New Orleans. This gives us a little bit of time to look back in retrospect and cover the New Orleans Saints free agent signings from 2024, but also take a look at those players they let walk.

One of the more intriguing players they let go was defensive tackle Malcolm Roach, who was an exceptional run defender with them, but they chose not to pay and he would move on to the Denver Broncos. Here is how things have played out for his career...

NEW ORLEANS — The NFL Honors ceremony on Thursday night didn't lack when it came to surprises.

One of those, at least to New Orleans sports fans, came at the end of the show, when former Saints Drew Brees and Steve Gleason present the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award.

The camera cut to Saints defensive end Cam Jordan — who was up for the award — several times. Brees read an introduction that appeared to be talking about Jordan, a 14-year pro who has spent his entire career in New Orleans.

Everything seemed to be aligned for Jordan winning the prestigious award — right up until it...

Every former Saints player, coach competing for glory in Super Bowl LIX

The 2024 NFL season concludes this Sunday at the Caesars Superdome, as the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs face off in Super Bowl LIX. For some players and coaches, kicking off this game in New Orleans will be a homecoming of sorts.

Steve Spagnuolo is the return that flies under the radar the most. The 2012 Saints defense he coordinated was so bad that you don’t even think about who was the calling the plays. Outside of a horrific defense, the 2012 season was pretty forgettable. It was the year Sean Payton was suspended and most fans don’t think deeply about that year if they don’t have to. But Spagnuolo is the only member of the Chiefs with a tie to the Saints.

The most prominent returns are C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Zack Baun. Each player has carved out an important role in the Eagles defense, which is coordinated by another former Saints coach. This is Baun’s first year away from the Saints, and he instantly turned into an All-Pro and Pro Bowler. Gardner-Johnson is in his third season away from New Orleans.

Here are all the Super Bowl LIX players and coaches competing for glory on Sunday evening:
