Saints need better production from two free-agent defensive tackles added in 2023 for a more disruptive front line this season

By Bob Rose - Saints News Network | SI

After an abysmal performance from their defensive tackles in 2022, the New Orleans Saints made a decision to completely revamp the position last offseason. First, the Saints signed free agent tackles Nathan Shepherd and Khalen Saunders. They followed that up by spending a first round draft choice on DT Bryan Bresee from Clemson.

The 2022 Saints allowed an average of over 130 rushing yards per game and 4.5 per carry, ranking a lowly 24th in the league. Most of those yards were surrendered inside, as opponents often had their way with the New Orleans interior. The tackles also made no impact as pass rushers, combining for only 13.5 sacks and 29 QB hits while managing only 16 tackles for loss.

New Orleans ranked 22nd against the run last season, giving up an average of 120 yards per contest and 4.4 per carry. Those numbers aren't much better, but opponents had much greater success with off-tackle and outside runs than running inside. Saints defensive tackles also combined for just nine sacks, 22 QB hits, and 16 tackles for loss.

Another former New Orleans Saints player joined the team’s staff. Longtime tight end Josh Hill was recently hired by the team to work in the teams pro scouting department. It was reported by NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill that the plan is for Hill to initially work as an advanced scout, studying tape for future opponents and helping to identify tendencies to exploit on game days.

This wouldn’t be the first time that a former player has returned to the facility to join the staff. We’ve seen guys like Zach Strief, Jahri Evans and Sterling Moore all make their way back down to add...

NFL wear and tear has Drew Brees throwing left-handed in retirement

New Orleans Saints legend Drew Brees had a tumultuous early career in the NFL, specifically at the end of his tenure with the then-San Diego Chargers, when he tore his labrum and dislocated his shoulder in his throwing arm.

This was ultimately what led to him becoming a free agent and being available for the Saints, however, it was also what slowed him down later in his career. Brees spoke with the media during a press conference for his Saints Hall of Fame selection, admitting that he would have played another three years in the NFL.

Injury on top of the general wear and tear of a...

Drew Brees says consideration of 2021 comeback was 'very' serious

Two decades in the NFL takes a toll. If Drew Brees had his way, he would have continued playing quarterback for the New Orleans Saints for three more years after his final season ended back in 2020. Brees reflected on his career Thursday when the Saints announced that he had been selected for the team’s Hall of Fame.

Injuries deteriorated Brees’ throwing arm so badly that he doesn’t use it when playing catch with his kids in retirement, instead throwing left-handed. Had his arm held up he would have kept playing until he was 44 years old. He even considered a comeback in 2021.

“Very,”...

Former New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has been selected for induction into the Saints Hall of Fame Class of 2024. The team made the official announcement at a press conference today.

Brees retired on March 15th, 2021, exactly 15 years to the day that he first signed in New Orleans. He led the Saints to a historic 2009 season to become Super Bowl XLIV champions. Brees finished an incredible 20-year NFL career with 80,538 passing yards, 571 touchdown passes, and a completion percentage of 67.7%.

The Saints Hall of Fame induction and celebrations will take place later this year...

NEW ORLEANS — Arguably the greatest Saint of all time will enter the team's Hall of Fame in 2024.

The Saints made the announcement on Thursday. He's the only player player inducted this year. Brees spoke about the honor on Thursday, saying it's tremendous and it's always great to be back in the facility.

He thanked his teammates and said, "They inspired me every day."

Brees played 305 regular season and playoff games and threw for more than 85,000 total yards and 598 TDs.

The former San Diego Charger QB came to New Orleans in the aftermath of Katrina.

New Orleans Saints game previews: Week 2 at Dallas Cowboys

Our New Orleans Saints game previews continue with Week 2 of the 2024 regular season, which brings a huge test against the Dallas Cowboys. Can the Saints upset a Super Bowl contender? Or are the Cowboys really just pretenders? Mike McCarthy’s team has yet to get over the hump in January, but Dennis Allen’s squad hasn’t even gotten that far.

Either way, they’re a challenging opponent. Dallas has a better record at home (.778) than anyone else in the NFL since 2021, including the playoffs. They’ve made the playoffs in each of the last three years. It would mean a lot for the Saints to...

Drew Brees selected for New Orleans Saints' team Hall of Fame

Drew Brees was officially selected for the New Orleans Saints’ team Hall of Fame on Thursday, in what was likely the easiest decision the voters have ever had in front of them. Brees elevated the Saints to a national brand during his 15-year run as their starting quarterback, winning every major passing record at some point during his tenure. He was also named Most Valuable Player in the Saints’ Super Bowl XLIV victory.

Brees and his family returned to the team’s Ochsner Sports Performance Center for a press conference in his honor, which was attended by former teammates and staffers he...

Recapturing homefield advantage will be key for Saints in 2024

How many games do you think the New Orleans Saints have won since Drew Brees retired after the 2020 season? It’s been three years, and the Saints have been at home for 25 contests during that span. The Caesars Superdome was once a fearsome venue for visiting teams, and the Saints still have a reputation as a squad that benefits from the Who Dat Nation’s raucous homefield advantage.

But check the numbers and you’ll see that narrative doesn’t hold much water. The Saints have gone 12-13 at home from 2021 to 2023, winning just a dozen games since Brees hunt up his cleats. That’s a winning...

Hubbard’s 2024 NFC Quarterback rankings

The New Orleans Saints are heading into the 2024 season with a lot of hope that Derek Carr and new offensive coordinator, Klint Kubiak, can turn things around. 2023 was far from great offensively, but there has been a lot of optimism from inside the building on what the offense can become this season.

Obviously, that starts with quarterback play. If the Saints want to make the playoffs in 2024, they need Derek Carr to play like a top-10, preferably top-8 quarterback in the NFC, so today, I thought we’d go through and rank every one of the NFC QB’s and figure out if Carr can reach that...

Saints win probability for every game on 2024 schedule

  • News source: John Sigler

How high are expectations for the New Orleans Saints in 2024? They have to view this as a playoffs-or-bust year for head coach Dennis Allen, who should be on the hot seat after coming up short in each of his first two years on the job. Allen has everything he should need. He has his quarterback, his handpicked assistants, and the easiest strength of schedule in the NFL, at least based on last year’s standings.

But just how easy is this schedule, really? The Saints will compete against each of their NFC South rivals twice, as usual, but they’ll also square off against the always-hyped NFC East and tough AFC West. Non-standard matchups include the Cleveland Browns, Green Bay Packers, and Los Angeles Rams. Each of those three teams reached the playoffs in 2023.
