NEW ORLEANS — Drew Brees' Hall of Fame career nearly ended before it began, if not for timely advice from his mother.

Arguably, the greatest New Orleans Saints in the franchise's history almost quit football his sophomore year of high school.

"I thought I wasn't going to get a chance to play," Brees said during the "Going Long" podcast with former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel.

Brees says he was the backup quarterback to Johhny Rogers on junior varsity, and Johnny's older brother was the starting QB on the school's varsity team.

The former Super Bowl MVP told Daniels he would have...

As promised, former New Orleans Saints backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is ending retirement for an NFL comeback. But the Saints fan-favorite isn’t coming back to New Orleans. Instead, he’s signing with a Super Bowl contender: the 13-2 Detroit Lions.

Bridgewater, 32, enjoyed immediate success as a high school football coach. In his first year on the job he led Miami Northwestern (his alma mater) to a state championship in 3A competition. Now he’s returning, at least briefly, to life as a player.

Just don’t look for the Lions to throw him into a game any time soon. Jared Goff is the...

Rookie report card: Grading the Saints 2024 draft class after Week 16

After an abysmal performance in front of a nationwide audience on Monday night, it’s time to reflect on the New Orleans Saints rookie class and how they fared.

Many guys received opportunities this game with injuries across the board but a few struggled to produce with such a depleted unit. The production offensively was the talking points in this game, as there was quite literally no answer on that side of the ball. We saw better play on the defense/special teams side of things which is encouraging but after scoring zero points, there isn’t too much to hang your hat on.

With that said, here are our grades after Week 16 for our 2024 Saints rookie class:

An unexpected former New Orleans Saints quarterback is back in the news. Ian Book signed with the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad after Jalen Hurts (concussion) and Kenny Pickett (ribs) were nicked up by injuries, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. Hurts wasn’t able to practice to start the week while Pickett was limited.

This isn’t Book’s first stop in Philly. The Eagles claimed him off waivers when the Saints let him go back in 2022, and he spent that season and the next summer’s training camp with them. He has since held backup roles with the New England Patriots and Kansas City...

No quit in 5-10 Saints: 'There's a lot of guys who are playing for something'

The New Orleans Saints have no shot of making the playoffs, so some may feel the team has nothing to play for. But interim head coach Darren Rizzi pushed back on that narrative.

You may see that as something he has to do. You wouldn’t be wrong, but Rizzi isn’t being facetious when he says, “There’s a lot of guys who are playing for something.”

Spencer Rattler, Kendre Miller, Alontae Taylor and Kool-Aid McKinstry are some of the best examples of players who are playing for something to close out the season.

Those are the types of players Rizzi described: “We have a lot of younger players...

How did Saints use their running backs in Alvin Kamara's absence?

Darren Rizzi told reporters the New Orleans Saints would take a committee approach to replacing Alvin Kamara. Rizzi laid out the plan was to use Kendre Miller, Jordan Mims and Jamaal Williams in the backfield. It seemed to be the plan to use the triumvirate equally, though it had primarily been Miller sharing the backfield with Kamara.

Plans had to change offensively after falling into an early hole against the Green Bay Packers, and that directly impacted the running back room.

“The way the game played out, we dug such a hole. We had a plan for Kendre coming in, and we got into a lot of...

The New Orleans Saints have been one of the worst team’s in football as of late, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t still talent on the roster.

It is almost impossible to project what Mickey Loomis and Co. in the Saints front office will do next season, but handing out a lot of extensions can seemingly be ruled out.

Among the list of players that are set to hit free agency next season, Pro Football Focus listed two New Orleans players in the Top 50 set to be available.

Tight end Juwan Johnson was the highest-rated Saint at No. 37 overall. Here is what they had to say about the pass...

Saints rookie QB Spencer Rattler given mediocre grade for debut so far

The New Orleans Saints rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler hasn’t had a very fair first crack at the NFL, but has still been somewhat underwhelming with the cards he’s been dealt.

Under Rattler, the Saints offense failed to score a point against the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football. It is hard to hold it all against him, though.

Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports recently gave each young passer in the league a grade for this past weekend and Rattler was assigned a ‘C-.’ This is what Trapasso had to say about the New Orleans youngster:

Rattler has completed 56% of his passes for 859...

New Orleans Saints add playmaking Georgia Bulldogs safety in mock draft

The New Orleans Saints have holes pretty much everywhere on defense, which opens up everything for the 2025 NFL draft.

With the Saints also seemingly locked into a just ok spot in the draft order, going best player available seems like the best strategy moving forward.

That’s exactly what Yahoo Sports‘ Nate Tice and Charles McDonald did in their latest mock draft, selecting Georgia Bulldogs safety Malaki Starks at No. 10 overall for New Orleans.

Here is what the writers had to say about the pick:

The elite defensive back is known for his highlight reel interceptions, but has become a...

Our offense vs their defense: Las Vegas Raiders

The New Orleans Saints became the first team of the season to be shutout in their Week 16 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Monday night. The offense struggled immensely, but this week they get a much easier challenge with the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Raiders defense has not been good this season. They’re allowing 26.0 points per game, which ranks 27th in the league, and just won their first game since week four. They’ve given up 25+ points eight times and 30+ five times.

Despite some defensive struggles, the Raiders are actually a pretty good defense against the pass. They give up about...

The good, bad, and ugly from the Saints' shutout loss to Packers

The New Orleans Saints played one of the worst games in modern NFL history on Monday night against the Green Bay Packers, and they did it in prime time in front of the entire country. An injury-riddled Saints roster braved the cold weather and got blown out 34-0. There was little to like about this game from the Saints’ perspective and plenty to complain about, but we’ll try to take a measured approach in reflecting on it.

Here is the good, the bad and the ugly from the Week 16 loss to the Green Bay Packers.
