Alex Okafor says he should be ready for Saints’ training camp

Alex Okafor’s excellent first season with the New Orleans Saints ended prematurely after a late injury, but the team elected to bring him back on a two year contract during the NFL’s free agency period this offseason. Now, he says, is the time to get fully rehabbed from his injury.

That’s going according to plan, the 27 year old defensive end said.

“I’m right on track,” Okafor said at the Saints’ offseason workout. “I should be ready to go by training camp, but honestly, at this point, there’s no rush. We’re just trying to take it one day at a time and make sure that when I do come back I’m right back where I was.”

Where he was, was pretty impressive. In his first season with New Orleans after coming over as a free agent from the Arizona Cardinals last offseason, Okafor made an immediate impact, and was enjoying perhaps the best outing of his NFL career before suffering the injury in a Week 11 game against the Washington Redskins.

Saints rule out 4 ahead of Week 16 MNF showdown vs. Packers

There aren’t many surprises on the New Orleans Saints’ final injury report of the week. Ahead of their game against the Green Bay Packers, the Saints ruled out four players and listed one as questionable.

Derek Carr, Alvin Kamara and Chris Olave were all ruled out, but that was the expected procedure for all three players. Darren Rizzi said Carr and Kamara were going to miss the Monday night matchup earlier this week.

This isn’t the news Bub Means was hoping for. On Saturday, New Orleans Saints interim head coach Darren Rizzi told reporters that Means had suffered a setback in practice and would likely revert to injured reserve, ending his season.

Means suffered an ankle injury earlier this season that put him on IR for several weeks; when he was cleared to return to practice, he was only able to work on a limited basis for a few days before sitting out again. Now his year is likely over with his 21-day practice window coming to a close.
