New Orleans can absolutely make a run at a title in a season with a loaded roster

Even when they won their only Super Bowl with Drew Brees and Sean Payton, the Saints were a one-dimensional team. Gregg Williams ran an -- ahem -- aggressive defense, but it wasn't necessarily a good defense, just an opportunistic one.

Last year things magically changed in New Orleans, thanks in large part to a historically good draft class that featured Marshon Lattimore and Marcus Williams, first- and second-round picks respectively, step up in a big way and improve the defensive side of the ball. The Saints went from a defense that is perennially the worst in the NFL to a top-10 team by DVOA, a highly improbable jump up from 31st in a single season.

Ryan Rymcyzk and Alvin Kamara, offensive picks in those same rounds, helped too. The Saints became a running-focused team, but in a modern way, with Kamara fitting in perfectly as a modern air back who can also run between the tackles. He and Mark Ingram were an incredible complement to each other, and a four-game suspension for Ingram shouldn't derail that. Ramcyzk allows them to watch Zach Strief walk away without skipping a beat. The offensive line is loaded, just like every other position group on this team.

The Dallas Cowboys announced they hired Brian Schottenheimer as their head coach late Friday evening, meaning the New Orleans Saints are now the only team that remains looking for a head coach. They ended up playing the long game, and chose to wait out the other teams to get their choice of the remaining candidates. While this is a decision that could go either way, many of the candidates they did interview still remain which is a somewhat good sign.

Saints complete an in-person interview with Dolphins DC Anthony Weaver

Anthony Weaver, the Miami Dolphins' defensive coordinator, was interviewed in person by the New Orleans Saints on Friday. This was the Saints first in-person interview of the head coaching cycle.

Weaver, 44, has only been with the Dolphins for one year; however, he has a total of 13 years of NFL coaching experience. He also spent seven seasons in the NFL as a defensive end (four in Baltimore and three in Houston).

Players describe Weaver as a passionate coach who cares for his players.

Zack Baun and Trey Hendrickson making first-team All Pro was a great reminder of the talent the New Orleans Saints let walk out of the building. As if that wasn’t enough, both men are also finalists for Defensive Player of the Year.

In a season, where there wasn’t a defensive player, or players, who clearly stood over the rest of the pack, this award seems up in the air.

Baun winning the award feels like a long shot due to his position. He was great in his first year with the Philadelphia Eagles, but Luke Kuechly was the last linebacker to win this award over a decade ago.

Derek Carr is not the quarterback of the future for the New Orleans Saints. He was brought in by Dennis Allen to help elevate the Saints. That didn’t happen and it would be far from surprising to see the Saints move on from Carr soon. ESPN’s Giants beat reporter Jordan Raanan wouldn’t rule out a divorce this offseason.
