First-round pick Marcus Davenport has been enjoying his first organized team activities with the New Orleans Saints, especially when he has a chance to go fast.

Fortunately, coaches have encouraged him to move fast even while he's still learning the intricacies of his position.

"It got to a certain point where they're just like, 'We want you to play fast. It doesn't necessarily matter if you mess up; just go fast,'" Davenport said.

The Saints still have plenty of time to teach Davenport the minutiae of playing defensive end in the NFL, but coach Sean Payton and defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen said they've been encouraged with Davenport's progress.

"He's a quick learner, and he's picking it up," Nielsen said. ...

How can the New Orleans Saints get better in the 2025 NFL draft? After a 2-2 start with Sunday’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons, they’re slotted in at No. 13, per Tankathon, and they clearly have some problems. It’ll take more than one draft pick to cure what ails them.

So is a running back the answer? No, not for everything. But Boise State prospect and Heisman Trophy candidate Ashton Jeanty was too good to pass up when we got on the clock with the Pro Football Focus 2025 NFL mock draft simulator.

Nerds will tell you not to draft a running back in the first round, but NFL teams are showing...

The Saints are talented, but they aren't a good team yet

We were riding high after the first two weeks, but last-minute losses to the Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons have proven one thing: The New Orleans Saints are not a good team. Until proven otherwise, they are a talented but average team.

Chris Olave is a good player whose route-running allows him to create separation with regularity. Alvin Kamara has gained over 100 yards from scrimmage every week this season. Rashid Shaheed is an elite deep threat.

Defensively, Demario Davis is still one of the best linebackers in the league. Tyrann Mathieu’s nose for the ball hasn’t faded...

It wasn’t enough for Trevor Penning to cost his team 15 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles. The NFL came calling with an $11,255 fine for unnecessary roughness after he drove Eagles cornerback Darius Slay out of bounds and into the New Orleans Saints’ bench.

This was the kind of play Penning was criticized for coming out of college, and he had done a good job avoiding them after turning pro. But this was an instance where he fell back into bad habits. It was a dumb play that injured Slay, and bowled over one of Penning’s coaches who couldn’t get out of the way in time on the sideline...

Tyrann Mathieu banged up vs. Falcons, now dealing with groin and heel injuries

Tyrann Mathieu exited Sunday’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons with a groin injury, per ESPN’s Katherine Terrell, adding to his list of ailments. The New Orleans Saints safety has already been limited in games with a heel issue, and he also dealt with a calf injury earlier this season.

But this groin injury could be the most serious of the bunch. Starting center Erik McCoy is out six to eight weeks after undergoing core muscle surgery for a similar injury. Hopefully it isn’t as dire aa situation. It’s a good sign that Mathieu observed the rest of the Falcons game from the bench with his...

Last-minute losses are becoming a trend for the New Orleans Saints, and if head coach Dennis Allen can’t cure what’s ailing them, it’ll cost him his job. In back-to-back weeks we’ve seen the Saints snatch defeat from the jaws of victory with avoidable errors and poor decisions. That simply can’t keep happening.

Now that’s not to say they’re not doing some things well. These games wouldn’t come down to the final minutes at all if Klint Kubiak’s offense wasn’t getting so much out of its playmakers while the defense does its job. But the Saints are who their record says they are: a .500 team that’s had as many highlights as low moments. They need to tip those scales in the right direction.

Here’s our quick reaction to Week 4’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons:

The New Orleans Saints dropped to third in the NFC South after a close 26-24 loss to rival Atlanta Falcons. The team continued to struggle with glaring problems that caused their first loss of the season against the Philidelphia Eagles. While some issues were solved, the team has a lot to clean up before they can compete for a division title.

Alvin Kamara has been one of the bright spots in the Saints' offense showing up when the unit has struggled. Despite playing with broken ribs, Kamara garnered over 100 yards of offense on Sunday, marking his fourth game this season going for 100+...

Dennis Allen's defense hasn't learned how to close out tight games

For the second week in the row, the New Orleans Saints defense had a chance to close out a game and failed. This is beginning to feel like a regular occurrence for them, and this is one of those times the eye test and statistics tell the same story.

Whether it’s a Paulson Adebo pass interference penalty or Jordan Howden running into Marshon Lattimore for a coverage bust, the Saints defense has struggled to close the game. Dennis Allen’s unit is supposed to be the strength of the team, but they’ve failed in the biggest moments. Holding onto these late leads is a weakness of the unit...
