Drafting Kool-Aid McKinstry does NOT mean that the Saints will trade Marshon Lattimore. Here's a closer look at the talented Alabama corner and the logic behind the pick.

By Bob Rose - Saints News Network | SI

The New Orleans Saints pulled a bit of a surprise in the second round of the NFL Draft on Friday. They traded up from the 45th overall slot to the 41st, the ninth pick in the second round, while giving up a fifth and sixth round selection. That wasn't the surprising part.

With that 41st overall choice, the Saints selected Alabama CB Kool-Aid McKinstry. The pick took some by surprise. New Orleans had more pressing needs and already has an outstanding trio of corners in Marshon Lattimore, Paulson Adebo, and Alontae Taylor. However, a closer look reveals some strong logic behind the selection.

Here's an analysis of McKinstry and why the Saints made a wise decision in the second round.

Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB - Alabama

A three-year starter at Alabama, McKinstry was arguably the best cover man in the SEC. He brings good size (6'0" & 199-Lbs.) along with a clear football IQ and added versatility as a punt returner. ...

What a week for Kool-Aid McKinstry. First, he was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the second round of the 2024 NFL draft — a cause worthy of celebration. And McKinstry has a pretty sweet partnership in the works with his namesake. Kool-Aid will soon launch a limited edition flavor offering named “Black Cherry Blitz,” inspired by McKinstry’s favorite flavor, to celebrate the occasion.

We’re still waiting on details for when these unique collectibles will become available, so stay tuned. But it’s tough to not draw a comparison to the special Alvin Kamara Airheads candies the star...

Zay Jones may make sense as another Raiders reunion for Saints

The NFL draft is always tough on older players. Teams come out of it flush with young talent, which often leads to redundancies — that are quickly dealt with in a wave of cuts around the league.

And that’s exactly what Zay Jones experienced with the Jacksonville Jaguars this week. Jacksonville drafted former LSU wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. in the first round of this year’s draft, and a few days later chose to make room in the receiving corps by letting Jones go. Now he’s a free agent, and the former Las Vegas Raiders wideout could make sense for the New Orleans Saints.

Sure, the...

WATCH: Back-to-back first round draft picks Taliese Fuaga, Laiatu Latu compete 1-on-1

It isn’t too often you’ll see a pair of first round draft picks compete against each other at the college level. So it’s really impressive when you see two players picked back-to-back line up against one another.

That’s exactly what happened when UCLA kicked off against Oregon State last season, pitting right tackle Taliese Fuaga (the New Orleans Saints’ future pick at No. 14) against outside linebacker Laiatu Latu (the Indianapolis Colts’ choice at No. 15).

And it was one impressive battle. JM Football’s Bobby Skinner highlighted the battle in the trenches between these two future...

Alontae Taylor has maintained an interesting social media presence during his career with the New Orleans Saints, and another chapter was added on Tuesday as he hinted at changing his jersey number for a second time.

After coming into the NFL and initially choosing the No. 27, he switched to No. 1 for 2023. Now, he is hinting at changing to his college number of 2. Jameis Winston held it when Taylor first joined the team, so it only recently became available.

The No. 2 jersey is currently being used by backup quarterback Kellen Mond. Mond could be cut, though, after the team drafted...

Four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Chris Harris Jr. has officially announced his NFL retirement. The 34-year-old most recently played with the New Orleans Saints in 2022, marking what would be the end of a 12-year professional career.

“I realized that everybody was pretty much moving on with the younger players, the younger wave,” Harris said in an interview with The Denver Gazette’s Chris Tomasson. “So I thought it would be great to just call it an end.

“I was able to accomplish pretty much everything,” Harris reflected. “Getting All-Decade was the top thing. I feel definitely blessed...

Chase Young will be taking the field with the New Orleans Saints alongside several new teammates — but also many familiar faces. The team features several former Ohio State Buckeyes who played with Young in college.

Outside of Young, the Saints currently have three Ohio State alumni on the roster between cornerback Marshon Lattimore, linebacker Pete Werner and wide receiver Chris Olave. To say nothing of leaders he respects like Cameron Jordan and Tyrann Mathieu. He is looking forward to reuniting with them and getting to learn under the Saints coaching staff as he adjusts to a new team...

Undrafted Saints WR Kyle Sheets picked as an instant-impact rookie

The New Orleans Saints have been busy in undrafted free agency as they try to find a hidden gem that can make the roster. They have a thin wide receiver room this year so the door could open for someone new to earn a roster spot.

For Touchdown Wire’s Jarrett Bailey, the player that could make an immediate impact is Slippery Rock’s Kyle Sheets:

Sheets is one of several rookie wideouts the Saints signed after the 2024 NFL draft along with Jermaine Jackson (Idaho) and Mason Tipton (Yale). But his biggest competition may be fifth-round draft pick Bub Means (Pitt) and veteran journeyman...

Saints might get a compensatory draft pick in 2025 after all

  • News source: John Sigler

Could the New Orleans Saints finally have a full assortment of picks in the 2025 NFL draft? They rejected temptation and didn’t trade away any of next year’s picks in the 2024 draft, only using a couple of current-year picks to move up in Round 2 for cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry.

It’s a good thing, too. The Saints already traded their pick in the seventh and final round of the 2025 draft along with defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson in 2022. That pick conveyed to the Philadelphia Eagles, who sent back a fifth-round pick in 2023 (which was traded to move up for offensive lineman Nick...

The New Orleans Saints have been in something of a state of limbo at the quarterback position since the retirement of Drew Brees. From Taysom Hill to Jameis Winston to Derek Carr, things have not worked out to a point of true satisfaction in the quest to replace an NFL legend — or even have someone consistently competent under center.

Now the Saints have drafted a quarterback for two consecutive seasons, taking Fresno State product Jake Haener last year and South Carolina’s Spencer Rattler in 2024. While Haener has shown promise at times and Rattler provides reason for optimism after the...

The New Orleans Saints have signed UDFA WR Mason Tipton.

Tipton is from Akron, OH where he attended Archbishop Hoban High School. Tipton was a three-time state champion in football and earned first-team all-league as well as first-team all-region in his senior season. Tipton would spend five years at Yale playing four seasons of football (no season in 2020 due to COVID). In his career, Tipton finished third in school history in receiving touchdowns with 19, fifth in receptions with 132 and sixth in yards with 2,067. He was also a three-time All-Ivy selection.

At Tipton’s pro day, he...

27 Saints players slated to become free agents in 2025

The 2024 NFL draft is behind us, and teams are already beginning to look towards 2025. Some decisions are simple, like picking up the fifth-year option on successful draft picks (or choosing not to exercise options for struggling players). Other calls won’t be so clear-cut. The New Orleans Saints in particular like to sign next year’s free agents to extensions over the summer, and we could see that strategy repeat in the months ahead.

Last year the Saints extended soon-to-be free agents like Carl Granderson, Cesar Ruiz, and Cameron Jordan in order to get ahead of the curve. There are 27 players on the roster right now whose contracts run out in 2025, so we should expect them to get busy re-upping guys when it makes sense. In some cases it’s smarter to let them test the market. Others are worth prioritizing sooner.

Remember, there are three different classes of free agents: Unrestricted (who qualify for compensatory draft picks if they leave), Restricted (who could bring back compensation if signed away), and Exclusive Rights (who can be kept on a minimum salary). Navigating different situations can get complicated. Still, some of the players on this list will never get close to free agency. Others are going to leave. Here’s an early look at all 27 of them:

How did you grade the New Orleans Saints’ haul in this year’s NFL draft? Some teams’ 2024 draft grades are all over the place, depending on where you loo, but the Saints are scoring pretty consistently in the A to B range, with some lower ratings here or there. For the most part, they made moves to improve at positions the media thought they needed to.
