Let's play GM for the Saints this offseason, making decisions on the future for New Orleans leading up to the draft.

By John Hendrix - Saints News Network | SI

The offseason can't get here soon enough for the Saints, because that's when the real excitement begins for New Orleans. On the field this season? It's been a disaster. The Saints are going to end up turning in their worst campaign since 2005 when they went 3-13. This season has been all kinds of wrong, and there's so much to do over the next few months.

While I'm clearly not the general manager of the Saints, here's the way I'd approach things if I were Mickey Loomis trying to start the process of fixing the team. I'm going to go through most everything here, including what I believe happens with New Orleans, so buckle up.

Coaching Decisions:

Hire Anthony Weaver or Vance Joseph

There's two coaches I would narrow the search down to when it's all said and done, and that's Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver and Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph. Joseph is of the Kubiak tree, which honestly makes him a more viable candidate for the Saints job in my opinion. Weaver is from the John Harbaugh tree and interviewed well with the Commanders and Falcons last offseason. Although his experience isn't necessarily there, I like his makeup a lot.

The Saints must go against the grain here and not stick with familiarity, even if it is what they want to do. Weaver is a very smart and talented defensive-minded coach. He's a former player and I just like sourcing from a background that has learned under one of the league's best coaches. He wasn't in my top-tier list, but my next-tier list.

WHAT I THINK HAPPENS: The Saints aren't getting Ben Johnson, and Aaron Glenn is probably the leading guy here, but I expect the Jets to be very interested in him as well. Glenn also has to say yes to the Saints. ...

The New Orleans Saints have not had many interviews so far this cycle, but on Monday, it was announced that the team will host both Mike Kafka and Anthony Weaver for in-person interviews later this week. The search is heating up, and per Nick Underhill, the Saints are set to have their first interview with former Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy.

The date for this interview is unknown due to the incoming snowstorm, but it will be this week. Depending on what happens with Glenn and the Jets Tuesday, the Saints may be able to meet with McCarthy as early as...

Saints' thorough vetting process may delay their head coach hiring timeline

The Saints have an in-person interview scheduled with Aaron Glenn on Wednesday. It makes sense they’d strike quickly after the Detroit Lions’ loss to the Washington Commanders.

Glenn has been the projected favorite for New Orleans since Day 1. The MMQB’s Albert Breer reports the Saints are “hoping to do second interviews with all five of the other guys they did virtual interviews with (Mike Kafka, Anthony Weaver, Joe Brady, Kellen Moore, Darren Rizzi).”

It’s been a thorough vetting process. Each of those candidates saw a lot of faces staring back on those initial Zoom calls; not just...

Does Aaron Glenn’s order of interviews disclose a preference?

Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn has a meeting scheduled with the New Orleans Saints on Wednesday. The operative word here is scheduled. First, Glenn has to make it to Wednesday without taking another job. That wasn’t the case for his teammate Ben Johnson who reached an agreement with the Chicago Bears on Monday.

Glenn’s first in-person interview is with the New York Jets on Tuesday. It had been previously reported that Glenn’s preferred destination was New York, though local outlets in New Orleans dispute that. This decision to meet with the Jets first definitely gives...

Jayden Daniels knew it before anyone else.

The rookie out of LSU has managed to make that eleven-year-old tweet ring true. Following his win over the Detroit Lions, Daniels became just the second rookie quarterback to lead their team to a conference championship. Next weekend, he’ll be visiting Philadelphia in an effort to be the first rookie QB to start a Super Bowl.

So far, through his two playoff victories, Daniels has accumulated 567 passing yards with four touchdowns and a quarterback rating of 116.2.

“I always believe that we can achieve more than what people give us credit for,”...

Things are picking up in the NFL coaching carousel — Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is going to the Chicago Bears, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that ex-New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen is “the leading candidate” to join him as defensive coordinator.

Allen previously interviewed with the Indianapolis Colts for the same position, but they reportedly went with longtime Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo instead. That frees up Allen to join Johnson in Chicago.

And wouldn’t you know it, but the Saints have a road game with the Bears scheduled...

The College Football National Championship will take place on Monday night with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish taking on the Ohio State Buckeyes. There will be plenty of 2025 NFL draft prospects showcased that the New Orleans Saints should keep an eye on.

Heading into the draft, pretty much every position on the field needs to be addressed in some way. The good news is that these are two schools that generate a ton of NFL talent and have been targeted by the Saints in the past.

Here are the top prospect matchups that New Orleans needs to keep an eye on in the game:

It’s been rumored for weeks, but the New Orleans Saints are finally scheduling a sit-down interview with former Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy. McCarthy previously met with the Chicago Bears after his contract with Dallas expired last week. Because he’s not under contract with another team, he’s free to meet in person without setting up an initial virtual interview.

Per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill, that’s going to happen later this week, with exact timing depending on the weather. A rare winter snowstorm is headed for Louisiana and the Gulf South...

The New Orleans Saints search for a new head coach is heating as reports came out on Monday that they are conducting 2nd interviews with not one but two of their prospects.

Per Tom Pelissero , the Saints are bringing in New York Giants OC Mike Kafka for a second interview on Tuesday for as well as Miami Dolphins DC Anthony Weaver on Wednesday.

The Saints previously conducted virtual interviews with Weaver on Tuesday, January 8th and Kafka on Thursday, January 9th.

Detroit Lions DC Aaron Glenn is also expected to meet in person with Saints officials on Wednesday. Glenn is rumored to be...

Lions coach Dan Campbell 'prepared to lose both' coordinators this year

New Orleans Saints head coaching target Aaron Glenn has expressed the comfort of returning to the Detroit Lions if it came to that. But his head coach, Dan Campbell, surely doesn’t seem to see that happening.

Campbell told media, he’s “prepared to lose both” Glenn and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson this offseason. This mindset likely stems from two things: Campbell has high belief in both of his coordinators, and he’s had conversations with both of them after their interviews.

Campbell’s belief in his coordinators has been validated by what the Lions have built over the last couple of...

With an early exit for the Detroit Lions in this year’s playoffs, one of the New Orleans Saints top candidates will be getting a second look a little earlier than expected.

Aaron Glenn, former Saints secondary coach and Lions defensive coordinator will be visiting New Orleans on Wednesday of this week. Glenn has already met with the team virtually during the Lions bye week but will now get an opportunity for an in-person visit his second time around.

Glenn is also set to complete an in-person, second interview with the New York Jets as well, the team who drafted him third overall in...

Does Chase Daniel have an inside track on the New Orleans Saints head coach search? The longtime NFL backup has found success as a media analyst and commenter after hanging up his cleats, and Drew Brees’ old handshake partner shared his predictions for which candidates will take which jobs in this year’s cycle.

And he doesn’t have Aaron Glenn, Kellen Moore, Mike McCarthy or Kliff Kingsbury going to New Orleans. Instead of those A-listers, it’s New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka who Daniel sees wearing in black and gold.

Kafka is visiting the Saints this week for a second...

The New Orleans Saints have continued their head coaching search and now have another week of footage to review as they narrow down candidates.

While a decision doesn’t seem to be looming, a list of candidates has begun to take form. Unfortunately for the goal of hiring a coach, a handful of the top candidates are still in the playoffs. Some coaches strengthened their cases while others left fans with a bad taste in their mouths.

Here is how all of the Saints’ top head coaching candidates performed this weekend during the NFL playoff’s Divisional Round:
