The evolution of the Saints

Hey everyone, know it's been a while since I posted on here. I try to catch every Saints game live but it's not always possible as a full-time coach. Being somewhat less engaged than years past with my favorite NFL team has made it so I don't always have a lot of original insight to share, but I am noticing something this season (really starting back with last season) in terms of how the Saints are evolving and climbing out of that slump that they've really toiled in more or less since bounty gate.

The first thing I have to touch on is how much more I appreciate Sean Payton as a coach now that I am going into my 8th season as a HC. I think he is hands down the best coach in the NFL. Great NFL coaches--Super Bowl winning coaches--rarely make it with a team a decade or longer in the NFL because sooner or later salary cap, free agency, coaching turnover (all your good assistants get better offers), age of your core players... everything catches up with you. Luck has a lot to do with staying power, but so does adaptability.

The Saints are not playing the same football they were playing pre-2017. The prevalent thought may be "oh they're getting back to their Super Bowl season formula." That's not *false*... but it also doesn't come close to telling the whole story.

First, on offense... their ability to play situational football is really impressive. I can't say that Drew Brees has declined as a player, but I can also tell you he is not facing the situations he faced 5 or 10 years ago. I am not saying he is not throwing as many deep balls or doing as many 5 and 7 step drop plays... I'm saying that he is not the centerpiece of the opposing team's gameplan. You see fewer inside pressures, less resources being dedicated toward disrupting the QB. Not because Brees isn't a threat. But because he isn't being used as the main driver of the offense.

There are more hot keys to the backs. The Saints are far less shy about going 60% run in a game. They aren't shy about targeting Michael Thomas an insane amount. Taysom Hill is on the field in numerous situations (I could go on and on about how Payton uses Hill and the genius involved there). At this rate, Brees could seriously play until he is 45 (although he won't). Don't get me wrong, he is still the most important player on the team. BUT he isn't being FORCED to be.

And it's not that the Saints are that much more talented or explosive than in years past. They're just more efficient. They are more multiple. They are getting more juice out of every element of the offense.

Defensively, it is still difficult to clearly state what their identity is. Their front 7 is deep and talented, and Davenport is going to be a monster once he grows mentally into the game. But their back end is worrysome and tends to be feast or famine when it comes to turnovers. PJ Williams is not a good slot CB, but he appears to be the best option they have. He has poor eye discipline and is too easily manipulated by releases and stems. It's frustrating because you can see the physical tools are there, and in that sense I understand perhaps why the Saints are sticking with him. But he is the weakest link right now on the defense, and somebody needs to step up and start creating more turnovers.

The Rams game will tell a lot about where the Saints stand, but it also isn't the end-all. The difference between a 11-5 team and a 5-11 team in the NFL is usually a few 1 score games here and there. Right now the Saints are winning those games. If they can keep closing and evolving the way they are--particularly on offense--there is no reason Brees can't get one more ring before he hangs up the cleats.

Tyrann Mathieu is ready to play his former teammate, Jameis Winston, on Sunday. Mathieu has one message for Winston, “I’m expecting a shot the first play of the game, Jameis, so throw it up there.”

Mathieu intercepted Kirk Cousins in the fourth quarter to help the New Orleans Saints break their losing streak. The safety would like to build a streak of his own, but he knows Winston: “Probably tells me he’s going to throw it at me before he actually does it.”

Familiarity plays a big part in this matchup. “He knows us, we know him,” Mathieu said. Winston wasn’t in New Orleans long, but...

The New Orleans Saints only ruled out two players for Sunday’s matchup with the Cleveland Browns including running back Jamaal Williams and guard Lucas Patrick. The Saints listed six players as questionable. Center Erik McCoy was among those listed as questionable as he looks to see the field for the first time since suffering a groin injury against the Philidelphia Eagles in week three. Linebacker Pete Werner was upgraded to limited on Friday after missing two practices with a hand injury. He is questionable.

The Browns only listed one player with a game-day designation, ruling out...

It’s no secret that Tyrann Mathieu is a special talent. The New Orleans Saints safety returned home to close out his illustrious NFL career, and while Mathieu’s 2024 season hast had more low moments than he’s comfortable with, the highlights stand up with the best plays throughout his career.

He’s still making history. Mathieu is tied with his old college teammate Patrick Peterson for the most interceptions among all active NFL players (36). So which one was his favorite?

“I hate to say it but it’d have to be my rookie season, playing against Drew Brees in the Superdome,” Mathieu...

Aggression will be a part of the Saints' culture under Darren Rizzi

For the rest of the year, you can expect the New Orleans Saints to be aggressive with their decision making.

After losing the last seven games under Dennis Allen, Darren’s Rizzi won his first game against the Atlanta Falcons. When you change head coaches in the middle of the year, sometimes you get an interim coach bump. Was that all it was? The Saints will have to prove that through the rest of the season.

Beyond rejuvenated energy, the Saints displayed an aggressiveness that will continue. When he was first announced as the interim head coach, Rizzi criticized Allen’s decision to not...

The New Orleans Saints where able to catch a breath of much-needed fresh air following Sunday’s 20-17 upset victory over the Atlanta Falcons, who have been one of the NFL’s biggest rising teams in 2024.

It also marked the first game of the Darren Rizzi era after the team parted ways with Dennis Allen in a move that hardly surprised anyone.

Now, the Saints hold a -1.3 FPI rating, good for 21st in the NFL. They will host the Cleveland Browns at home this weekend, who head into the matchup with a -0.3 FPI rating, 18th in the NFL.

FPI is described as “a measure of team strength that is...

Jameis Winston expressed nothing but love for the city of New Orleans and the Saints as he makes his return as a member of the Cleveland Browns.

Everyone who plays for the Saints doesn’t get chosen by the city when the jersey is off. Winston was one of those players. “The people in New Orleans, I really love them. They really helped that transitional period in my life.”

Winston did start for New Orleans at one point, but he came to New Orleans as a backup to Drew Brees. To be a former first overall pick and not get a starting job requires one to swallow his pride. Winston did that to...

Saints rule out 2 players, 6 more questionable vs. Browns on final injury report

Believe it or not, this is a big improvement. The New Orleans Saints ruled out just two players against the Cleveland Browns, with six more questionable on the final Week 11 injury report. Just one starter is out for sure — left guard Lucas Patrick (ankle) — and three others are in the questionable group between center Erik McCoy (groin), linebacker Pete Werner (hand), and cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry (hamstring). Werner at least will be a game-time decision.

That’s a far cry from where the Saints had been in regards to injuries for much of this season (and last year, and the year before...
