The Saints are creating salary cap space, but for what reason?

By John Hendrix - Athlon Sports

The New Orleans Saints were in on Cooper Kupp. The Saints were trying to land Charvarius Ward. The Saints should look at this player. The Saints just missed out on this player. All of these things come up at one point or another in the NFL offseason.

What this says about the Saints and their direction is telling, for anyone who hasn't really been paying attention. It's also not really a secret. New head coach Kellen Moore has publicly said on multiple occasions that New Orleans is competing for the NFC South. Most of the moves the team has made echoes it.

The Saints have created nearly $30 million in salary cap space after reworked deals, which begs the question of what they're planning on doing. Here's some free agents for them to look at, with proper attention given to positions of need at wide receiver, left guard and cornerback. There's three tiers used, essentially most expensive to least expensive options.

Top-Tier Free Agent Targets:

Asante Samuel Jr.
...
Brandon Staley could use Asante Samuel Jr. the right way. The cornerback could fill the STAR role for the Saints, as he has a knack for making plays. He's had one reported visit with the Arizona Cardinals and is coming off of a season-ending shoulder injury (stingers) after just four games with the Los Angeles Chargers. ...

Why the Saints should look at drafting Texas Tech running back Tahj Brooks

Don’t panic when it comes to the running back position in this year's draft, because it is backloaded with talent. If the New Orleans Saints fail to land Boise State back Ashton Jeanty, there are many other prospects the Saints could take.

Tahj Brooks, a running back out of Texas Tech University, could be one of those candidates.

According to the school's website, Brooks, a fifth-year senior, is the university's all-time leading rusher, with 4,557 yards in 56 games. Additional career accolades include being named second-team all-Big 12 in 2024, a 2024 academic All-American, four-time...

The New Orleans Saints have waived DT Camron Peterson.

The 6’5”, 280-pound former Southern University Jaguars defensive lineman signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent during the 2024 offseason and has yet to play a regular-season snap as a pro. In his only preseason appearance, Peterson recorded one tackle and one stop, with zero pressures on 26 total snaps (18 run defense, 8 pass rush).

Former New Orleans Saints LB Willie Gay Jr. has agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins, per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

After winning back-to-back Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2023 and 2024, Gay bet on himself by signing a one-year, $3 million deal with New Orleans, hoping for an increased role in Dennis Allen’s defense. Instead, the 27-year-old started just eight of the 15 games he appeared in for the black and gold, while his 277 total snaps marked his lowest since his 269 as a rookie in 2020. Gay finished his lone season rocking the fleur-de-lis with 17...

Saints re-work yet another player contract

The New Orleans Saints and making cap space from restructuring deals is a yearly occurrence. It is not surprising that the team has to get cap-compliant and make signings to improve the team. These restructures are built into the contracts, so it is easy for the Saints front office to do them. The other way the Saints have gotten cap-compliant/made more space was by getting players to re-work their contracts. We just saw this from Cam Jordan taking a pay cut, and today, per Katherine Terrell, it was revealed that WR Cedrick Wilson has also done this.

With Wilson coming off of a...

Going into free agency, many expected the New Orleans Saints to be active but not make massive signings. In reality, the team has actually been very active in free agency and has been in the race for many big-name players. The Saints got one of those deals done with safety Justin Reid, which was a massive surprise and a great deal. They were also in the race for WR Cooper Kupp, but with the years/money he wanted, the Saints were unwilling to risk that much for an aging receiver. There was another top available player New Orleans was in for, and the deal was at the finish line. Cornerback...

The Saints need to sign a solidified starting left guard

The New Orleans Saints have made some great moves this offseason, and the front office clearly has playoff hopes with this team. If more work is not done, the moves made so far might be for nothing. There are still some glaring holes on the roster, specifically at left guard, cornerback, and wide receiver. The Saints have a lot of talent at WR, and they were able to address corner a bit with the signing of Isaac Yiadom. The one position remaining is LG, and although there is a talented group of guard prospects in the draft, not signing one before is pretty risky.

Instead of starting with...

Official numbers of Saints DE Cam Jordan’s contract restructure

With all the cap maneuvers the New Orleans Saints needed to do this offseason, one that was most expected was a potential contract restructure with Cam Jordan. There was a small chance that if this agreement was not made, the Saints legend could have been on another team in 2025. The good news was Jordan did rework his deal to stay with the team, and today, those numbers were released.

Per a report by Nick Underhill, Jordan’s new cap number would be under $10 million.

As noted above, this is a huge cut that will now save the Saints more than $10 million dollars in cap space. Per Over the...

On Thursday, March 13, the New Orleans Saints signed former Philadelphia Eagles TE Jack Stoll to a one-year deal.

The 27-year-old from Lone Tree, Colorado attended Regis Jesuit High School, competing in track and field as well as playing basketball and football. He played college football for the Nebraska Cornhuskers for 4 years and declared for the NFL Draft in 2021.

Stoll was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Eagles in 2021. He spent 3 seasons in Philly before a brief stint with the New York Giants in 2024, only to be re-signed to the Eagles practice squad later during the...
