Saints could have deepest defensive line they've had in years if everything pans out

By Joel Erickson -- Advocate

One or two brilliant edge players are not enough to form an elite pass rush by themselves.

They have to have help.

Four defensive linemen racked up eight sacks or more for the Jacksonville Jaguars, now dubbed "Sacksonville" last season. Four primary pass rushers posted 5.5 sacks or more for Pittsburgh and Carolina, the other two teams with more than 50 sacks last season.

When the New Orleans Saints made a bold move up the board to grab UTSA defensive end Marcus Davenport in the first round of April's draft, the move was instantly and rightly tabbed as an effort to find a long-term bookend for All-Pro defensive end Cameron Jordan.

But the move also means the Saints have assembled more talent on the defensive line than they've had in years.

The New Orleans Saints have shown repeated interest in current Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy, but have not been able to interview him with his contract yet to expire. That will all change in just a couple of days, though.

Jerry Jones and the Cowboys have until Jan. 14, 2025 to sign McCarthy before his contract runs out and he becomes open to every team without a coach.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero signaled that the two sides have just started negotiations on Friday with the deadline rapidly approaching.

The former Super Bowl-winning leader has been in Dallas since the 2020 season...

Marshon Lattimore versus Mike Evans provided every New Orleans Saints versus Tampa Bay Buccaneers showdown with a little extra intensity. The Saints traded Lattimore away to the Washington Commanders this year, and he will take on Evans again for the first time in a different uniform in the wild card round of the NFL playoffs.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to call Evans and Lattimore arch-rivals. New York Jets receiver Davante Adams spoke with Kay Adams on the rivalry between the two players, saying: “I know both of them boys are crazy.”

You see how far the rivals go and how frequently...

New Orleans Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan has no plans on retirement, but when he does decide to hang up the cleats, he will likely have a future in media.

As of right now, he currently has his own podcast and is regularly a guest on shows. Many athletes have made the transition from playing the game to covering the game, and it feels like an easy transition for Jordan.

His latest foray into media will be a part of CBS Sports’ The NFL Today on Sunday as an analyst, alongside former Atlanta Falcons quarterback, Matt Ryan. CBS Sports announced Jordan’s appearance with an old video of...

Saints interim coach Darren Rizzi completes HC interview with Jets

The New Orleans Saints gave interim head coach Darren Rizzi a chance after firing Dennis Allen. While that experiment didn’t exactly work out, some other teams could still be interest in the special teams ace.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport shared an update Saturday afternoon that Rizzi had completed an interview with the New York Jets for their head coach opening.

The Jets may be one of the few teams with more dysfunction than the Saints right now, but that could make Rizzi an interesting choice. New York is desperately in need of a culture boost and that’s exactly what he brings to the...

The New Orleans Saints have closed out their 2024 season with a 5-12 record and are already looking ahead to the future by already starting their head coaching search this week.

Several big names are being interviewed like Aaron Glenn, Kliff Kingsbury and Joe Brady but this is just the first week of many interviews.

Also, earlier this week, we asked our readers whether they thought the Saints were headed in the right direction and just 11% said they think that the Saints are.

The results are not surprise given so much uncertainty around the team. But once they lock up a head coach and...

Josh Allen jokes Joe Brady brought 'nothing' to Bills, hopes teams stay away

Will the New Orleans Saints hire Joe Brady as their next head coach? That’s unknown — NFL rules won’t allow him to even speak with Mickey Loomis over a teleconference until Wednesday or Thursday next week — but he’s in the mix just like other respected coaches around the league.

And the Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator is in high demand. The work he’s done to help Josh Allen step up is impressive. But the MVP candidate quarterback offered a deadpan response when asked just what Brady’s presence has meant this season.

“Nothing,” Allen grinned wryly, repeating, “Nothing. He hasn’t done...

An old clip of New Orleans Saints coaching candidate, Aaron Glenn, on The Pivot Podcast has resurfaced as Glenn has become one of the hottest coaching candidates on the market. In the clip, Glenn explains to the Pivot crew his coaching philosophy.

“Coaches over here and players over there. That’s not what we are,” Glenn said, reflecting on his interactions with different players and realized most teams aren’t operated with this mentality.

Glenn told a story of inviting former Detroit Lions defensive back Tracy Walker over to his house to watch film. Walker told Glenn he’d never been able...

It’s taken longer than many LSU Tigers fans may have expected back in 2019, but Joe Brady is in consideration for multiple NFL head coach openings this winter. The play caller for the Tigers’ national title-winning squad flamed out quickly in his first stint as an NFL offensive coordinator, but the fallout from his Carolina Panthers tenure hasn’t trailed him very far.

Now he’s got the Buffalo Bills in the thick of the AFC playoff picture with Josh Allen putting together a performance worthy of MVP votes. And while teams like the New Orleans Saints have requested head coach interviews with...

NFL rules are slowing down the New Orleans Saints head coach search

There’s been a lot of consternation about the New Orleans Saints’ search for a new head coach — not helped by media analysts who rank the team’s opening among the worst in the NFL this offseason. Just why is it taking so long to find a full-time replacement for Dennis Allen? Is it because nobody wants the job?

Patience is a virtue. We’ve already seen the Saints interview half of the candidates they’ve requested meetings with, having spoken with Anthony Weaver, Mike Kafka, and Aaron Glenn in NFL-mandated virtual interviews. Those same NFL rules are slowing down the search.

Coaches who are...

Saints named great fit for an embattled former first-round pick

The New Orleans Saints don’t have an inspiring option at quarterback for next season, and they could look to make a move for a different, cheaper option under center than Derek Carr. If nothing else Spencer Rattler could use more competition to back him up than we saw from Jake Haener this season.

Anthony Palacios of LastWordOnSports recently listed the Saints as a top landing spot for Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields this offseason, putting them within the top five destinations.

Here is what Palacios laid out to make the case for Fields-to-New Orleans:

The New Orleans Saints have a long offseason ahead of them with plenty of questions to be answered.

They are not only looking for a new head coach, but any sort of direction for the future. That likely means a rebuild is on the way and now could be the time to move on from a couple of veterans.

Pro Football Focus’ Bradley Locker recently put together a list of 15 trade candidates for this offseason and three Saints players made the cut. Locker listed quarterback Derek Carr, offensive tackle Trevor Penning and safety Tyrann Mathieu.

Carr could be a hard sell (especially given his...

The New Orleans Saints aren’t seen as the most desirable vacancy this year (depending on where you look, they could have the worst head coach opening in the NFL), but Sports Illustrated’s Connor Orr laid out what could attract coaches to join the black and gold:

Orr doesn’t mention young talent like Chris Olave, Taliese Fuaga, Rashid Shaheed, Bryan Bresee or Erik McCoy in his pros. That either means he generally doesn’t view the Saints’ young players as a plus, or it just ranks low on the list.

There is probably no greater upside to coming to New Orleans than the weak state of the NFC...
