Things are picking up for the New Orleans Saints, who are joining the rest of the NFL in Indianapolis over the weekend for the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine. The Saints are hiring former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley as their new defensive coordinator on Kellen Moore’s staff, but for the most part, Staley has a blank slate to work with. The only defensive coaches on the team who have hung around since last season are, so far, pass rush specialist Brian Young and senior assistant Peter Giunta, plus assistants Adam Gristick and Matt Giordano. Staley needs to bring in help at every level: defensive line, linebackers, safeties and cornerbacks.

The New Orleans Saints search for a defensive coordinator is finally coming to an end, as the team is set to hire former Chargers head coach Brandon Staley to man that side of the ball.

Staley, who was the favorite all along in this process will be entering a unique situation here in New Orleans. New Saints head coach Kellen Moore was Staley’s offensive coordinator during his time in Los Angeles working under the former Chargers head coach. Only now those roles will be reversed with Staley now set to work under Moore as his defensive coordinator.

NEW ORLEANS — Kellen Moore has added a familiar face as his defensive coordinator.

According to ESPN Insider Adam Schefter, the Saints are hiring former Chargers head coach Brandon Staley as their defensive coordinator.

Moore and Staley worked together with the Chargers in 2023.

Last season, Staley was an assistant for the San Francisco 49ers.

On Thursday, the Saints hired Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier as their new offensive coordinator.
