'He does a good job of getting open and finding the right spot to be'

By John DeShazier | Senior Writer - NewOrleansSaints.com

There's a very good reason that Chris Olave appears to be open all the time, and that good reason is this:

He probably is.

If the coverage is man-to-man, the New Orleans Saints rookie receiver – No. 11 pick overall – beats his defender and if it's a zone, he finds the vacancy. Entering Sunday's game between the Saints (3-6) and Steelers (2-6) at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh, Olave leads all rookies in receptions (43) and receiving yards (618), and has two touchdowns.

Olave said he has developed a symbiotic relationship with quarterbacks, dating to college.

"I feel like (it's) just having a similar mindset to the quarterback, seeing what they see," he said. "I sat a lot in college, going over a lot of coverages and finding the soft spots in certain coverages. I feel like I have a connection with the quarterback as I see coverages, and then try to sit down in those zones.

"My coaches helped me with that (in college), knowing where everybody is going to drop post-snap."

One commonality on Kellen Moore’s coaching staff has been familiarity. You saw that with his connection to most of the coaches he hired on the offensive side of the ball. Defensive coordinator Brandon Staley was the head coach when Moore was with the Los Angeles Chargers. Moore is continuing to use those connections to fill out his staff.

The latest coach to be hired by the New Orleans Saints with a connection to Moore is Kyle Wilber. The New Orleans Times-Picayune’s Luke Johnson reported the Saints hired Wilber as a special teams assistant Monday morning, an upgrade from being the Green...

The Los Angeles Rams have given Matthew Stafford’s agent permission to speak with other teams, which may open the door for him to be traded. The New Orleans Saints don’t have the current supporting cast to make this move make sense, so they shouldn’t be expected to be involved in trade discussions for Stafford.

The news however does impact Saints quarterback Derek Carr. His future in New Orleans remains uncertain, and Kellen Moore didn’t provide any clarification on the matter in his introductory press conference.

Stafford pushes Carr down the veteran quarterback big board if Carr leaves...

Last week, the New Orleans Saints hired Brandon Staley as their next defensive coordinator and now the team can focus on filling out the rest of the defensive staff before the NFL Combine. Today, per Tom Pelissero, the Saints have hired Texas assistant head coach/defensive pass game coordinator Terry Joseph to become their next defensive pass game coordinator.

Joseph has coached since 1999 and wherever he has gone, the defensive back group has success. The Saints have talent in their DB room, and Joseph could be the perfect hire to develop some of these younger players.

Saints named a reasonable landing spot for recently-cut Patriots LB

The New Orleans Saints will need to stretch their limited money a long ways this offseason, which means they will likely be bargain hunting in free agency.

Anthony Palacios of Last Word on Sports recently listed the Saints as one of the top five landing spots for ex-New England Patriots linebacker Sione Takitaki. Takitaki makes sense as an option given that he will be cheap, but isn’t necessarily a needle-mover on defensive side of the ball.

The 29-year-old was a third round draft pick by the Cleveland Browns back in 2019. He spent his first five seasons there before signing a two-year...

The Brandon Staley conundrum: What makes the Saints DC so interesting?

Dennis Allen didn’t work as the New Orleans Saints head coach, but he was able to land a job with the Chicago Bears as their defensive coordinator in a matter of months. Matter of fact, Allen failed as the Oakland Raiders head coach becoming the Saints defensive coordinator.

The sentiment you can be a better coordinator than head coach is one Saints fans have heard since hiring Brandon Staley. Staley’s tenure as the leader of the Los Angeles Chargers didn’t go well.

This is where things get interesting. Staley comes to New Orleans with limited experience as a defensive coordinator. He...

Here’s a big move for Kellen Moore’s New Orleans Saints coaching staff. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports that the Saints are hiring Texas Longhorns defensive pass game coordinator Terry Joseph for the same role under Brandon Staley; Joseph has also coached defensive backs at Texas, so expect him to play a key role in rebuilding the secondary. Nola.com’s Luke Johnson confirmed the news of Joseph’s addition.

Joseph, a 51-year old New Orleans native, has been coaching at the college level for a long time. But before that he started his coaching career at Archbishop Shaw High School, his...

The 2024 season was a turbulent one for the New Orleans Saints receiving corps to say the least. The season started with Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed being the top two options, but neither player made it past Week 9 before suffering a season ending injury. Prior to the injuries, Olave was having another solid season, catching 32 passes for 400 yards in 8 games, (which still wound up being tops among wide receivers for the Saints in 2024) but Shaheed was in the midst of a breakout year.

He gained 73+ yards in 4 of 6 games and also caught three touchdowns while averaging 17.5 yards per...

The New Orleans Saints have selected all three of their coordinator positions, wrapping things up by hiring Brandon Staley as their defensive coordinator. They had plenty of options when it came to making a choice, but ultimately they went with the one who Kellen Moore worked with in 2023 and had some head coaching experience (albeit not great experience).

However, there were other options being considered, and after the hire was made, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reported that they had considered Colorado Buffaloes defensive coordinator Robert Livingston for the position.

This past Saturday, Yulman Stadium played host to the fourth annual HBCU Legacy Bowl. Treqwan Thomas, a defensive lineman from Alabama State, was awarded defensive MVP.

With the help of his four sacks, team Robinson was able to win the game against team Gaither by a score of 17-14.

“I just did my one of 11’s, bro,” Thomas said postgame. "I did my job, my teammates did their job, and hey, I came out with four.”

The Alabama State Hornet called the game a special experience.

“I ain’t going to lie, I’m speechless right now. I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” Thomas said when asked how the game...
