The visit was leading somewhere and quite possibly nowhere all at once.

The Saints’ interest in Tyrann Mathieu predated free agency. The dynamic playmaker brings a certain style of play to the field that Dennis Allen covets, but the circumstances hadn’t aligned. Sometimes both sides can want something to happen, but the details never line up.

Even when Mathieu visited the Saints last month, everyone involved knew there wasn’t a deal to be made. The safety was in town visiting family, and the team brought him to the facility to get to know him. Mathieu met with Mickey Loomis, Dennis Allen and the defensive coordinators, toured the facility and got some gear for his kids. Everyone felt good about the visit, and it went well enough to leave the door open, but it wasn’t enough for Mathieu to decline a virtual visit with the Eagles shortly after.

But the fit was always too obvious. Every time Allen spoke about how he wanted to have interchangeable safeties capable of playing either free or strong safety on any given snap, it was hard not to think about how nicely Mathieu would fit into that vision alongside Marcus Maye. In some ways, it felt like the role got made for Mathieu. ...

Did Sean Payton take a dig at the Saints in Broncos' postseason presser?

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton shared some interesting commentary when boasting about the health of his team, some of which felt like a dig at the New Orleans Saints.

The Broncos were one of the healthiest teams in the NFL this season, and Payton rightfully felt proud about that. Payton told Broncos media in his postseason presser, “Once again, the injury data, I think 32 teams, a year ago, we finished first. This year, we’re currently second.”

And Payton gave credit for that to a couple of former Saints staffers, including strength and conditioning coach Dan Dalrymple, who was...

The New Orleans Saints don’t have very much money to spend this offseason and have plenty of holes to fill, which means they will need to find some cheaper players to sign.

As Pro Football Focus’ Bradley Locker found one free agent for each team in the NFL, he found a player from the rival Atlanta Falcons that could fit that description.

Impending free agent cornerback Mike Hughes was the pick for Locker. Here is his reasoning:

The Saints traded away Marshon Lattimore this offseason and Paulson Adebo is likely to be a free agent, so corner is a huge need. Hughes would be an interesting...

The New Orleans Saints could be in line for an extended evaluation on New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, as he’s now been selected as a head coach in this year’s Senior Bowl.

Kafka, an offensive guy of course, will now get the opportunity to spend an entire week getting to know some of college football’s most exciting young talent, while also helping them improve their draft stock. This time could also be valuable in getting more insight on a coach like Kafka, who’s mostly been kept behind the scenes in the few places he’s been (having come up on Andy Reid’s Kansas City...

The New Orleans Saints enter the offseason with a ton of questions to answer. One question, the quarterback, could end up in the hands of the offensive coordinator.

Derek Carr is the most likely option by far, but there is a chance that they eat the cap hit and cut ties. If that were to happen, they would probably move to Spencer Rattler and bring in a veteran to compete.

That would have to be the case in the future that Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport sees, as he recently named the Saints a landing spot for Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold.

Here is why Davenport believes it...

Mickey Loomis addresses the departure and ascension of Zack Baun

Zack Baun has been an interesting player ever since the New Orleans Saints drafted him in 2020. The initial conversation surrounding Baun was his fit in the defense. He was an edge rusher in college, putting his hand in the dirt and rushing against offensive linemen, who was being pushed into being an off-ball linebacker and asked to cover receivers out in space.

Baun’s immediate ascension into an All-Pro, Pro Bowl linebacker with the Philadelphia Eagles showed the Saints didn’t have the wrong idea. They just had the wrong people trying to execute that plan.

Mickey Loomis told reporters...

The Athletic's 2-round mock draft has Saints drawing from blue-chip programs

The 2025 NFL draft class is beginning to take shape with underclassmen declaring whether they’ll turn pro and seniors telling their schools goodbye. And while the there’s been plenty of criticism for the New Orleans Saints spending early-round draft picks on prospects from smaller programs, that wasn’t an issue in this two-round mock draft.

The Athletic’s Dane Brugler argues the Saints should start their 2025 draft by picking Georgia safety Malaki Starks at No. 9 overall:

Starks is an intriguing talent, and if he’s able to play every down defensively he could be well worth the pick. The...

Shout to Taliese Fuaga — the New Orleans Saints left tackle was named the best rookie at his position by ESPN. Ben Solak shared his 2024 NFL All-Rookie team, and Fuaga won top honors on the first team.

Its’s even more impressive when you remember that Fuaga didn’t play on the left side in college. He moved from right tackle to left after turning pro and proved to be the team’s best option at that spot. Here’s how his rookie season stacked up against his peers:

There was plenty of debate about who the Saints should have picked at No. 14 last spring before they took Fuaga; Latham and...

Report: Saints are not Aaron Glenn's preferred head coaching destination

You have to think this news hit New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis like a thunderbolt. It’s the New York Jets, not the Saints themselves, who are reported to be at the top of Aaron Glenn’s wish list.

The New York Post’s Brian Costello reports Glenn, the Detroit Lions defensive coordinator whose services are coveted by teams looking for a new head coach, would prefer to go back to the team that drafted him.

Costello wrote in a recent column that, “(Glenn) has told people the Jets are his first choice if he were to be offered a head coaching position.”

It’s not surprising...

The New Orleans Saints were eliminated from the playoffs a few weeks ago and coming off of one of their worst seasons in years.

For many fans, the 2025 NFL draft has been the only thing on their minds for a while. The good news is that they have a ton of draft capital to work with.

Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports recently compiled each draft pick that each team in the league has, and the Saints are tied for the sixth-most with eight selections.

The team with the most selections is the Jacksonville Jaguars with 10. The Minnesota Vikings have the fewest with three.

The final order is yet to be...

Mickey Loomis on Saints coaching search: 'We're open to anything'

The New Orleans Saints are stepping into this head coaching search with an open-mind. This is likely one of the lessons the Saints front office learned from the last time they had to make a change at head coach. The move from Sean Payton to Dennis Allen was so clear that Payton gave his endorsement on his way out the door.

Mickey Loomis told reporters this week, “We’re open to anything. We talked a lot about where successful coaches come from.” Aaron Glenn, Joe Brady and soon to be Mike McCarthy highlight the list of candidates New Orleans has already interviewed or plan to sit down with...
